Ubuntu :: Avant Window Navigator Over Triple Monitor System

Mar 31, 2011

I have been using AWN for years, having a startup script to run multiple instances of AWN and position it on each monitor correctly. This has worked fine but today I decided to upgrade the version of AWN. The only problem now being that the new version doesn't support multiple instances of AWN to be open at once. The new version of AWN does have an 'Add dock' button but that's no good as my setup isn't Xinerama so each monitor is it's own workspace, meaning I can't position the dock far left, because far left is the edge of the current monitor.

The ideal solution here would to be able to run multiple instances, as I can force each instance to a monitor with DISPLAY=0:1 etc.If anybody has any ideas on how to have AWN on each of the 3 monitors then please let me know.

Ubuntu :: Use Avant Window Navigator And Not Use Panels At All?

Sep 4, 2010

I like to set my panels larger than default and change their color, but when I upgraded to 10.04, the graphics behind some of the "items" on the panels retain the default color scheme. I know it isn't a big deal but it bugs me. I just created this user acct to show the prob without messing with my main login.

My solution was to use Avant Window Navigator and not use panels at all, but I would like to fix the actual prob.

Ubuntu :: AWN 3.9 Avant Window Navigator Multiple Monitors

Mar 6, 2010

How to get AWN to run on two monitors? I want a bar on each monitor. I used to be able to start two instances using a shell script below but that doesn't seem to be working now.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
killall avant-window-navigator
sleep 4
DISPLAY=:0.0 avant-window-navigator &
sleep 4
DISPLAY=:0.1 avant-window-navigator &

Playing around more with this and it looks like avant no checks to see if there is another instance running and will not start if there is. That is a bummer. Any way to change this?

dccrens@cavermax-ubuntu:~$ DISPLAY=:0.0 avant-window-navigator &

Ubuntu :: Getting The Most Out Of Avant Window Navigator As An Alternative "shell"

Mar 24, 2011

There are a lot of tutorials online for getting at individual features in AWN (or DockBarX), and I understand that not every feature I'm making use of here is necessarily going to be useful to every user - this is an interface tailored to my workflow. Still, if you're new to AWN, here's a quick tutorial on some of the features you'll want to know about to be able to take full advantage of it. The goal here is to configure AWN as an alternative shell to Unity that retains all the same basic features (and a few extra.)

In this tutorial, despite the default settings on everything else, I'm using the (very trendy, I know) Orta theme and Faenza icons. I don't think it's without reason that these are becoming Gnome's Aqua. They're very readable and clean, and they both include a lot of special features (like Orta's extensive appearance configuration options and Faenza's inclusion of special notification tray icons for common apps like Dropbox and Tomboy.)

Although I know there are perfectly good reasons for both options, I'm going to be assuming in this tutorial that you're using a theme with the window buttons on the left, as this is needed for the Unity-style workflow presented. If you don't know how to change this feature, I'll explain it when I mention gconf-editor below.

Ingredients:

We'll need to add two PPAs to your system - one for AWN and one for DockBarX.

Code:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:awn-testing/ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dockbar-main/ppa

After that, we'll update the package lists, then install these packages.

Code:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-trunk dockbarx awn-applet-dockbarx xfce4-utils ccsm gconf-editor

[code]....

We're most of the way to a functional-looking desktop, but there's still no Run Dialog when you press Alt+F2, because this is actually a dialog provided by Gnome Panel.Instead, we'll use the one provided by xfce-utils.From the Main Menu at the left, go to Preferences -> Compiz Config Settings Manager (ccsm), then click the Commands tile.

Enter "xfrun4" as Command 0, then click the keybindings tab. Enter whatever keystroke you like, although you might want to make it something other than Alt+F2 to avoid possible conflicts. You could use something like Synapse instead of xfrun4, although xfrun4 will allow you to run more complex commands. Either one will appear when you select Launch from the Main Menu.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Triple Monitor Setup: X Crashes When Moving To The Second Graphics Card (third Monitor)

Oct 22, 2010

This is a triple-monitor setup with two video cards, where the mouse pointer gets "stuck" if it tries to cross from one video card to the next one. It worked correctly in openSUSE 11.2 and doesn't work in openSUSE 11.3 with the same xorg.conf. This is a 64-bit openSUSE 11.3 with xorg 7.5-11.3 (the openSUSE prepackaged version). I've already tried NVidia drivers 256.53-16.1 (the openSUSE NVidia repository version) and 260.19.12 (the latest off of the NVidia website).

This is the same xorg.conf that I used successfully in openSUSE 11.2. I tried a new automatically generated xorg.conf using nvidia-settings and it had the same problem. This forum won't let me upload the relevant files, but here: [URL] is a tar-ball with my xorg.conf, Xorg.*.log, /var/log/messages, and the NVidia debugging output.

Slackware :: Dock The Navigator Panel On The Left Side Of The Window For Any Of The Office Applications?

Dec 16, 2010

I've tried some more recent builds of Libre Office from Alien Bob and I'm still getting crashes when I try to dock the Navigator panel on the left side of the window for any of the office applications.

Details are in this post. More specifically, I'm running libreoffice-3.2.99.3-i486 from Eric. When I run 'oowriter' (Libreoffice Writer) from the command line, and then try to dock the navigator panel, I get this message after the crash:

Code:
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to
retrieve property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-size' of type
`GtkRequisition' from rc file value "0" of type `glong'
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to
retrieve property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-spacing' of type
`GtkBorder' from rc file value "0" of type `glong'

I don't know if it happens with the 64-bit version or not. I haven't tried it yet. I'm no stranger to submitting bug reports, but I haven't looked closely at Libreoffice's bug submitting procedures. I'll do that soon.

Fedora :: Determine Which Process Belongs To Which Window In System Monitor?

Feb 26, 2011

I have Fedora Linux 13 64bit system. I use System Monitor to check which process is taking how much memory and cpu. Normally I have dozens of Chrome and Firefox windows open. The Processes tab shows which process is taking how much cpu/ram resources but I unfortunately there is no option like right click and make the window active that matches the PID (the one process that I have currently highlighted). Usually there is a chrome process taking up 30 or 40 percent of CPU while dozens other chrome processes taking much less cpu. I must determine which chrome window ( or any application which has multiple instances running) is taking that much CPU time. So can some one help me to solve this problem?

Ubuntu :: Lucid Triple Monitor / 2nd GPU Not Recognized

May 14, 2010

I have recently upgraded to Lucid with a clean install. I have two NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT cards with 3 21" monitors connected to them (two to card 1, 1 to card 2 although sometimes I plug in my projector so its 2 to both).I previously had Karmic installed and was able to use all three (or four) monitors without any problems. Now, however, Nvidia-settings only recognizes the one GPU. It will only recognize one or the other. If I edit xorg.conf so that Screen0 is on PCI:3 instead of PCI:1 (where my two cards are located) It will switch over to that GPU, but I can not get both to work together at the same time.

I have tried using my old xorg.conf but it does not work. I've tried editing the current xorg to have one monitor running off of each card and it will not work.

Debian Multimedia :: Triple Monitor Setup On Wheezy

Apr 29, 2015

I have some very strange issues with my tripple monitor setup on debian wheezy. I have acer aspire V3 laptop with i915 Intel (Intel® HD Graphics 4000) as part of i3 and nvidia GT 740M which I never managed to get working with or without optimus to any degree whatsoever. What I want is a reliably working triple monitro setup. I have 2 additional DELL u2412m monitors which I did manage to get to work on few occasions by more or less randomly turning stuff on and off via lxrand and KDE systemsettings (so I do knwo for a fact that tripple monitor setup works). Arandr doesn't work, and executing xrandr from cmd doesn't work. I can relatively easily get the 2 monitors to mirror each other, but to get them to work separately is extremy difficult. It's always the same error but the well known crt. For example:

xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 3840x0 --rotate normal
xrandr: Configure crtc 2 failed

xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1200 --rotate normal --right-of LVDS1
xrandr: Configure crtc 2 failed

When it did work I copied arandrs script in hopes it would work, but it doesn't. Obviously, here is the issue that the crtc can not be configured so if somoen could tell me why and how to get the damn thign to use a specific crtc it would be awesome. Also, I noticed that when I hit "identify monitors" in KDE systemtools, it would say VGA HDMI for both VGA and HDMI outputs.

Here is xrandr output from when it worked:

Code: Select allScreen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 5760 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1920x1080+1920+0 (0x46) normal (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 382mm x 215mm

        Subpixel:   horizontal rgb
        Gamma:      1.0:1.0:1.0
        Brightness: 1.0

Here is now:

Code: Select allScreen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3840 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Triple Monitor Xinerama - Cursor Movement Limited

Jun 6, 2010

UPDATE: I can get the wrapping to stop, but it offsets the image between monitors. It's like the center monitor's image was stretched upward, distorting the alignment with the side monitors, rather than just providing additional space at the top. If I switch it so the two side monitors are 120px lower than the center, (as i had it in 9.04) then the wrapping issue occurs again. This is frustrating. I could use some help. (64-bit Ubuntu 10.04)

After lots, and lots, and lots of googling, configuring, experimentation, and even unplugging and replugging, I finally got all 3 monitors working like I had them in 9.04... Or almost. The center monitor is larger than the two side monitors, being 1920x1200 compared to 1920x1080. When I move the mouse pointer on the center monitor, it hits a ceiling and disappears right around that extra 120 pixel area on top, and can be seen at the bottom of the screen.

Hardware :: New Triple Monitor Desktop - What Graphics Card Required

Jan 5, 2011

What graphics card will support (without too much fiddling) three 24" displays? I just got rid of my mac and am now going to get a linux desktop. I am not sure what distro yet, probably fedora although I am thinking about arch. I have some experience in linux, although nearly none when it comes to hardware configurations. I have two 24" BenQ monitors (DVI and HDMI inputs) and will buy a third 24" display with the pc.

Now I have been looking at some forums about triple monitor setups, but they are almost all about troubleshooting existing hardware compatibility issues. I guess I am at an advantage since I haven't bough any hardware yet, so here is my question. What graphics card would you buy to support 3 24" displays together (meaning that I want to be able to drag windows from one display to the next). I was looking at the ATI HD 5770 and some mention of the eyefinity stuff.

Ubuntu :: Backup And Restore A Triple-boot System?

Jun 14, 2010

best/simplest way to back up my triple-boot machine, which has Karmic 32-bit, Karmic 64-bit and Windows 7 (64-bit) installed on 3 equal slices of the internal 1TB disk. There are a total of 6 partitions (1 primary+1 logical partition each for the two Karmic, and 2 primary partitions for Win7), and I would like to back it up on an external disk such that the whole system can be restored as-is by writing over the disk. I guess this means correctly backing up data+partition table+MBR, and I would also prefer backing up only the used portion of the disk (rather than creating a 1TB mostly empty image file).

To my knowledge the only way to reliably do this is with "dd" command, but I have never used it ("fsarchiver" seems to be the next best option, but it cannot back up MBR yet; and "partimage" does not have ext4 support). As described here and here, I should run the following commands from a live boot:

1) To back up entire data in compressed format (using 1MB read block to speed up the process):

dd if=/dev/sda bs=1MB | gzip > /backup/image.gz

2) To back up MBR+partition table (stored within the first 512 bytes of the disk):
dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 of=/backup/image.mbr

3) To restore data:

gzip -dc /backup/image.gz | dd of=/dev/sda

4) To restore MBR+partition table:

dd if=/backup/image.mbr of=/dev/sda

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Mac Mini 10.04 Triple Boot On OS X / XP System

Sep 19, 2010

I have a Mac Mini with OS X that I had dual booted successfully with Windows XP for my family. I am a rookie at all this but learned a lot Googling sites that walked me through things. I got bold and tried to triple boot the Mac Mini with Ubuntu 10.04 using rEfIt. I was following this website. [URL].

MISTAKE #1
All was done to the letter until I accidentally realized I had clicked install on step 8 before I clicked "Advanced" to check off the "Install Boot Loader" and changing the device to the partition I had made for Ubuntu (/dev/sda3/). It finished installing and rebooted with the rEFIt screen with Mac / Ubuntu /Windows icons. Mac started, but both Windows and Ubuntu showed a black screen with blinking underscore in the top left of the screen. I went back to the Mac OS and in Disk Utility I noticed that the Linux-Ubuntu name on the partition I had made changed to "DiskOS3".

Mistake #2
I panicked and used "Erase" in Disk Utility on that partition using the Zero Out Data security Erase option.

Mistake #3
Then I reinstalled the Ubuntu 10.04 cd into the drive and did the install boot loader steps. It started up but the rEFIt screen now has Mac/ two Ubuntu penguins/ and Windows icons. Mac starts and works, but both ubuntu icons and Windows leads to the black screen with blincking underscore cursor.

Here are specs and data for hard drive below:
