I am having trouble getting grub to automatically boot into ubuntu server. When I turn on my server the grub menu shows up and shows me the choices. They all work fine except that grub wont automatically select one. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but this is a headless server and I can't boot into ubuntu without a keyboard. I tried looking through the grub 2 documentation but nothing seemed to work when I edited the conf file.

One computer .... three users .... three languages. How do you make that happen? User A speaks English and is happy with English. No problem. User B needs to use Chinese and would like the full system in Chinese. User C needs to use Thai and Chinese. They would prefer their menus to be in Thai and can use iBus for Chinese entry. How do you set up the system so that each user can select their system language when they login?

I was trying to create a shell script which will automatically login to the server 192.168.1.7 and checks if a user exists there or not, if it doesn't exist then it should create the user.I have very little idea about shell scriptThis is what I tried:Quote:
#!/bin/bash
pass="sacharje"
ssh 192.168.1.7
Now, how to pass that password automatically to the ssh when it asks for the password? (I can't use public key authentication here)

Just recently I noticed that I suddenly couldn't open any folders, just getting a message in my bar saying it was opening the folder, then it'd immediately close. I also could not right click on my desktop. I removed and then reinstalled Nautilus, then reboot, but now my problem has worsened.
I can no longer select a session type at the login screen, and after logging in I just get a small terminal window in the top left of my screen while the rest is the background for the gnome login screen.

I upgraded a machine with only default OEM user from 10.10 to 11.04 and my extremely useful gnome desktop was trashed by the upgrade. If I logout, the login screen does not give me a choice of login shells. What options do I have to ressurect a more useful shell than the default toy for untrained office staff and game players

I installed goblin by run GoblinUI.ymp and logged out.
After I logged out, I chose meego as session type and tried to login again.
I entered correct password, but when I press enter after type password , display change to black and got some message and backed to login session again.
On the other hand, I succeed in running MeeGo Live CD(1.0.1 build 1.4).
I wrote MeeGo Live CD image on USB Flash Driver by using Win32 Disk Imager, and boot that one successfully, although it has some flaw.
Network Settings Window is stuck in workspace and can't move or close, so it cover other appication's window. Internet on toolbar is broken, so I have to run FireFox in application toolbar to use internet.
I'm using Netbook based on Atom CPU and GMA.OpenSUSE installed in my netbook is installed by KDE Live CD image.
Should I Use Gnome to use Goblin, because MeeGo is using Gnome? Or.... what is problem make Goblin doesn't work?

I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.

I am using the sudo command to log on locally as another user by the following command:
sudo -u theotheruser -s
or
sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user. However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory. Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.

yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console
username: Name
password:
last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 Gnome. My computer automatically boots up at a particular time of day. But it stops at the login window.
1) How do I let it automatically login? I have set passwordless login. So when I manually hit my login username, it logs in without needing me input password. But it gives a pop-up window asking for keyring password.
2) How to get rid of it?

I am using kvkbd as an onscreen keyboard and I have it set to start on the login screen but after I login I want the keyboard to close and I can not get this to work. At the bottom of /etc/gdm/Init/DefaultI added the line.Code:exec kvkbd&This works great and kvkbd starts up and even puts a panel icon at the bottom of the login screen but after the login the keyboard is still there?I have tried making a launcher and adding it to the startup applications. I wrote a script and put it in the /usr/sbin and /usr/bin and also added a line at the bottom of my /etc/rc.local that should have run that same script to kill kvkbd and nothing. The really weird thing is that the launcher that I made would work if I double clicked on it but if i had it set to run as a startup application it would not work.

I have it configured in the application settings to do that, and I've checked the Startup Applications and indeed it is listed there. However when I start up the icon doesn't appear in the tray and my wallpaper won't change every 10 minutes like it's supposed to until I actually go to System > Preferences and run Desktop Drapes manually.

I upgraded to 10.04 this morning and all seems well except when the computer boots up I'm prompted to enter my password to unlock the login keyring.
Until I do that I can't do anything else, including getting a screengrab of the prompt, hence the attachment was taken with my mobile phone.
I didn't have to do this in 9.10 and don't remember changing anything to stop this.
My computer is set to login automatically so I don't really want the bother of entering my password (I know, I know, security, etc etc).

However, pommed doesn't start automatically on login. I have to maually start the service. Is their a way to have this service start automatically on login?

i am using ubuntu 11.04 in my AMD machine, I have scheduled some torrent and wget downloads using crontab and sleep commands respectively. Since the download starts at 2 AM i used to leave my system ON. I would like to know if the download will automatically start from the login screen itself.(That is suppose i switch ON the system at 2 AM and never bother to login to my account.)

Is it possible "reset" all (X, GDM related) permissions/settings of one user? What would cause one specific user not to be able to log into anything via gdm/the login screen? After providing the proper password, the screen goes black and then jumps back to the login screen. No session alternative works, not even xterm or gnome failsafe. I can however log in via the console (Ctrl+Alt+F6, recovery etc). With another user I can log in via GDM just fine, and deleting and re-adding the "broken" user doesn't make any difference.
Some (maybe) relevent logs:
part of syslog:
Quote:
Dec 12 01:20:58 <specific user> pulseaudio[1358]: core-util.c: Home directory /etc/timidity not ours.
Dec 12 01:20:58 <specific user> pulseaudio[1358]: lock-autospawn.c: Cannot access autospawn lock.
[code]....

I would like that the windows I am working on are reopened automatically at login, so I checked
System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Options Tab -> Check Automatically remember running applications when logging out.
It works but, unfortunately, sometimes windows are reopened in different workspaces. I have six workspaces and I usually keep a lot of windows opened, so rearranging them takes long.
Is there a way to ensure that windows are reopened in the same workspace?

I have recently installed Opensuse 11.4 on my desktop. And also upgraded my gnome-2 to gnome-3. Its works nice and I am enjoying it. Only the biggest problem I am facing is, if I lock the screen and leave my desk for couple of hours then user gets logged out automatically. Which is resulting all the documents and applications gets closed. I am unable to work in my desktop now.

I've created a set of users using the newusers command. Unfortunatelly ive messed up and added all users to the 1000 group as primary group instead of giving the group argument as null what would add them to a new group. To make things clear:
The entries should be
user:password:::User Name:/home/user:/bin/bash
but I did
user:password::1000:User Name:/home/user:/bin/bash
I need to create the missing groups. A simple fix could be do a for loop creating a group with the name of each user in my file and then adding the users to it. Are there any dangers of doing it? What impact could this change have? Are there any safer ways?
A combination of the following commands:
Quote:
Add users to a group with the gpasswd command:
# gpasswd -a [user] [group]
To delete existing groups:
# groupdel [group]
To remove users from a group:
# gpasswd -d [user] [group]
If the user is currently logged in, he/she must log out and in again for the change to have effect.
Quote:
for i in (names)
do groupadd $i
gpasswd -a $i $i
Assuming I've created all users in group 1000 I could remove them from it with
Quote:
# gpasswd -d [user] [group]

I'm using openvpn under linux OS which is Fedora Core 14, in the folder "/etc/openvpn" i put 5 files which belongs to the network server that I should connect to, files are :
two files with the extension ".crt"
two files with the extension ".key"
one file with the extension ".conf"
Now, when I issue the following command (as root) :
Code:
/etc/init.d/openvpn start
It asks for my username & password to the network server, & after I entered the required authentication information, I successfully login, but I get disconnected automatically after two or three seconds.
- I connect to the network without any disconnection or problems under windows
- I use openvpn version "openvpn-2.1.1-2.fc13.i686"
- there was a bug in my OS "Fedora core 14" which is that I cannot activate or deactivate any ethernet cards, which solved by disabling NetworkManager in all run levels
- I disabled iptables
- I disabled selinux
- I got this error in /var/log/messages file when I disconnect from the openvpn network "
Jan 15 21:45:15 ViRuS openvpn[4143]: script failed: could not execute external program
Jan 15 21:45:15 ViRuS openvpn[4143]: Exiting
Jan 15 21:45:15 ViRuS avahi-daemon[1494]: Withdrawing workstation service for tun0.
