I've been given an old blue and white Macintosh G3 350MHz 700MB RAM and 6GB HDD. When I try to install Ubuntu Server 9.10 PowerPC the installer tells me it cannot see a HDD and that I have to select a Driver for the Disk. I have absolutely no idea which driver to pick from the very long list.
View 2 Replieshaven't been around here in a while, seems that the other OS section is completely gone, so I assume this would be the most appropriate place to ask this, since Debian and Ubuntu are similar enough. Okay, so I installed Debian Lenny on my Power Mac G3. 450MHz, 1GB RAM, and an ATI Rage128, the stock video card. It also has a Linksys WMP54G Wireless card which I got working effortlessly enough.
My issue is with the screen resolution. The driver for the graphics card is installed, but I'm only getting a 800x600 resolution. My Monitor is a 1440x900 screen, so everything's quite out of proportion. I assume I may have to go into xorg.conf to tweak things, but I wouldn't know what to tweak. This is the only thing I need to do to make this my full time OS on this machine.
When i try to install Fedora 15 on a clean machine it freezes as soon as the pixelated load bar with the white, light blue and dark blue colors show.
I have tried several different versions of Fedora (64bit and 32bit) and have tried to burn it to a CD and/or DVD (For the larger version) and copying it to a usb pen with universal linux usb, liveUSB creator (from Fedora) and last one i don't remember the name on.
I have this 1 TB HDD , which had a single NTFS partition. I was planning to repartition it using my Mac OSX Disk Utility( my blunder). Once I did the reparitioning disk utility ran for like 8 hrs for reparition of 120 Gigs. After seeing no status after 8 hrs , I just plugged it out.After that am not able to use my HDD seems this wretched utilit has screwed thepartition table. Needless to say this 1 TB contains my 10 years of life time.Till now I have done :Used R3cover to recover partition table: No luckUsed Stellar for Mac : NO luck( this tool ran for 36 hrs before shouting No Data Found!!)Am runnig Test Disk: Interesting tool ran for 30 hrs and asked me to do a deep search now its been running for 2 days with status showing 50% usageThe status shows some 20 Linux parition, 1 Swap parition and 1 unknown partition.As Far as I know I never created any Liux partition.

I have installed F12 on my laptop, and got rid of the two-tone blue and white progress bar at boot time. On my other machine it just refuses to go!
How can I get a normal text-mode bootup, so I can see which services are starting?
I did exactly this tutorial says [URL] But now my Ubuntu 11.04 is stuck at blue-white login screen. Only User Defined Session and Recovery Console options are available but they are not working as well. But when I did the Gnome 3 upgrading, it asked for me to remove unused packages and I said yes. About 20 packages removed. Do I need to reinstall my Ubuntu? Or can I get my old Gnome 2? (Not Unity, I didn't like it.)

Ive recently built a music server with the following configuration:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 processor
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard with 2GB ram
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung 22X CD/DVD Burner IDE
I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CD�s) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.
I am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.
In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.
When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:
I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.
I want to use smartd for monitoring my hard disk regularly. What is the interaction of smartd with the hard disk driver that is in use. Whether the hard disk driver should be smart enabled or only the hard disk. Will any one help me in this.

I want to pop in temporarily a normal atapi cdrom from the windows world so I got a flat cable, I've stealed the alimentation from a pc and I started both.
I can't boot from that device...

after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died.The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. Almost everything works, but the sound and the brightness control do not. The sound one is the one that I am more concerned about. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
I've noticed in many versions of Fedora is that the blue colors don't seem so right. They appear more like violet in comparison to the Nvidia proprietary driver.I've tried playing with the new color profiles in F13 but none of them fixed this particular problem

I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had Ubuntu installed on my desktop for a month now, and its all worked like a charm, so I'm thrilled. I then decided to install it on my old laptop as well to see if I could breath a bit more life into it, and to get used to working Ubuntu a bit more. The laptop had 18.6GB partitioned to C:// drive or windows XP, and an empty 18.6GB D:// drive, so I deleted the D:// drive in XP using the Microsoft disk utilities tool, all well and good. I then did a clean install of Ubuntu-9.10-desktop with an Ubuntu CD into the largest continuous free space, and it set it up nicely. When I first booted it up there were a ton of updates to install, as there had been on the desktop first time, which I dutifully installed. As on the desktop a little notice popped up telling me to install the NVidia Proprietary driver for the NVidia card (specifically "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 96)[Recommended]"), as it had when I installed it on the desktop, so I chose to install that and then restarted the computer.
On restarting GRUB2 loaded, and it booted Ubuntu. I then saw the little white logo on the black screen for a couple of seconds, and then the screen goes completely white, with some pixels left behind fading to white slightly slower. First time through I held down the power button to force shut down, and on restart exactly the same thing happened. This time I held down alt+sysrq and went through the R, E, I, S, U, B sequence, however as opposed to usual I didn't get a black terminal-like screen after hitting any of the buttons, although it did reboot on B. It did boot correctly in recovery mode, however I was at a loss what to do here. Incidentally, the same problem occurred when I booted to previous version of the kernel as well.
Then I decided that as I didn't have any data to lose, and it was still early in the day, I'd do a clean re-install. This time I chose to ignore the updates, and just install the NVidia driver as prompted to check that it was the driver causing the trouble. Having installed the driver and restarted I got exactly the same problem as before - definitely this pesky NVidia driver, not any of the updates.So here I am at clean install 3, having just got all the updates, but not having downloaded the NVidia driver as prompted, with little desire to go through yet more reinstalls. My questions are:
1) Do I need to install this NVidia driver? The rest of the computer specifications are fairly paltry by modern standards, and I won't be doing anything graphics intensive on it (the most graphical program will probably be Battle for Wesnoth) and I I don't need to install it, not installing it seems to be the easiest way to solve the problem.
2) If I do need to install it how would I go around doing this without getting my charming white screen?
3) Is there a way of removing the driver from recovery mode that doesn't involve a clean install again? I have tried sudo apt-get purge nvidia-driver, which tells me there isn't any installed. I have tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf which made no difference. I have tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and this didn't help. I have tried a couple of other commands as well but I can't remember them, however I would probably recognise them if I saw them again.

Problem Description
Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause
The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).
Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.
The workaround listed is to:
set APM to 254
Furthermore, there is a script: Storage-Fixup which can also be downloaded from opensuse software search. Indeed there is a report of this for a Vostro 1500: Gmane Loom

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:
