I've installed Alarm Clock and was planning to use it to shut down my PC at a certain time every day. What command would I use to execute the shutdown, "sudo shutdown -P" ?
View 5 RepliesI'm looking for an easy to use alarm clock program that I can suggest to new users. The two I have tried so far have fallen short of my expectations. "Alarm Clock" from the Ubuntu software repository starts out okay, but when the alarm actually goes off, getting it to stop seems pretty unintuitive. Click on the Alarm Clock icon, then click a Stop button in the new window that pops up. Sounds easy enough except that the icon used for "Stop" is just this grey square, so for users who are not familiar with linux or this program, it isn't even obvious that it is a button. I had one user actually uninstall the thing in order to get it to shut up. Preferably one should be able to silence the alarm by click on the alarm icon (or right clicking, if a 'doze' behavior is preferred) The other one I tried was alarm-clock-applet, which wants me to locate an alarm sound on my filesystem. Uh, no.
Does anyone know of a simple, basic alarm clock system that anyone can just sit down and immediately use without having to 'get in to the head' of the developer? Are the KDE alarms better? Am I missing something about either of these programs which would make them easier to use?
I installed 'Alarm Clock' from the Software Center and would like to have said app autostarts. There is an option in Alarm Clock to autostart with Gnome but that doesn't work so I assume the reason being I'm not root.
How to autostart Alarm Clock?
Also, in System > Preferences > Startup Applications, the 'Add' asks for a command. Is this like Windows whereas I simply point it to the app I want started? I don't even know where apps are installed. Who said ignorance is bliss?

So far I wrote the file that actually initiates the song, and I was trying to set up a crontab so I could do it at a certain time, making it function like an alarm clock, but it isn't seeming to work, any input on why

I have one template set up to launch Pandora and I could probably get it to launch Rhythm Box but, how do I get it to launch Rhythm Box and begin playing a certain radio station playlist?

In Ubuntu Software Center, there's a picture of the program right in the panel and feature to add to panel, but there's no option for me to do this. "Add to Panel" doesn't have the application either.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI left the linux world for a few years and now i am trying to re-learn my shell scripting basics. I am writing a script for an alarm clock, but i seem to be running into a few issues.

My script, instead of doing what it should, produces the following errors:
./alarm: line 19: echo 11: No such file or directory
./alarm: line 26: 6: command not found
[code]....
and if i choose the time 11:06, files called 11 and 6 are creating in the working directory. I am sure it is something really simple, but i haven't used linux or scripting on my computers in around 6 years.
I need to set up an alarm to start at 7:30am and run every 5 seconds until I stop it. How would I acheive this in cron tab?

I have a nice app called alarm clock on Mac that plays music from my library on specified days of the week and times AND can wake the computer from sleep to do so. I was wondering if there was a Linux equivalent, such as crontab, that could do all those things. It's the last barrier to almost full time Linux use.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make an "alarm clock" with mpd and gxmessage. Gxmessage allows you to assign unique exit codes for its buttons to use in your script. This is what I have so far:

Now I know I'm way off with the case statement, because when the alarm_message function is called within the case, both of the exit codes I assigned to the buttons (-buttons "Stop":1,"Sleep":2 ) return to their default value.
What I would like is for every time the "Sleep" button is pressed, it would pause mpc, sleep for an amount of time, play, then open gxmessage again to restart the case statement (retaining the exit codes I assigned to the buttons). Am I on the right track?
I installed Mythbuntu 9.04 about 9 months to a year ago and (for the most part) I haven't had any problems with mythwelcome, automatic shutdown or the system clock. The "for the most part" relates to the fact that the clock on mythbuntu has always been 4 minutes fast. Then, just last week, the system started acting up - for some reason the system clock changed to 8-10 minutes fast (6 minutes faster than it was previously). To fix this problem, I have tried manually setting the "time and date" setting, and I have also tried setting the "time and date" setting to sync with an internet server. Lastly, I tried changing the system time through the motherboard bios. In each situation, mythwelcome would initially start up with the correct time. Then, several seconds later, the time shown in mythwelcome would change to being 4 minutes fast (as I described above). The time would also be 4 minutes fast when I enter the frontend.
I was willing to live with this, but the weird part is that when I start the system now (assuming I don't have any programs scheduled to record), mythwelcome boots up fine and I see the indication that "MythTV is idel and will shutdown in XXX seconds". Then, it flashes to "MythTV is idle" - like it used to; except now, it doesn't flash back to the countdown for shutting down mythtv. One time when I started the system when I was adjusting the time as mentioned above, I noticed that mythwelcome went to the "MythTV is idle" around the same time it changed the clock to 4 minutes fast - I think there is definitely a correlation here.
I checked out all the settings and nothing else has been changed that would otherwise affect MythTV from shutting itself down. The other interesting part is that I can get the shutdown countdown back if I go to "Utilities / Setup", "Setup", and "Mythbuntu". In the popup screen I choose "MythTV Configuration" and select "Launch MythTV Setup". I get a popup box that says that the mythbackend must be closed (as expected). Then I immediately exit mythtv-setup and the system runs "mythfilldatabase". I exit the Mythbuntu Control Centre and exit the frontend. When I get back to mythwelcome, the shutdown countdown comes back.

I've noticed that he conky clock is a few seconds early compared to the time displayed in the right hand side of the top panel (Natty). I guess both displays are based on the same "internal" time, so I'm left wondering how this could happen, and how to sync back the clocks.
It seems that Conky is in sync with the system date, while the panel clock is 2 seconds late (on my system). Checked with while true; do date; sleep 0.1; done
Just curious as to if it is possible to have the clock in the center of the task bar centered clock in Ubuntu 11.04?

However, the time showing in os using date command differs from bios time by roughly 4 hours. I am running ntp services which sync the time with another centos server on the network. It appears that some services are using virtual clock and some use physical clock. How do I get rid of virtual clock and only use physical clock?

I use ssh for a headless unit and I can reboot fine, but I told it to shutdown and disconnected me and stopped logging (as far as I can tell) and then nothing. The lights stayed on and I had to press the power button. Is there a way to keep the logger running or to look someplace other then messages. I'm not great with logs.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI want my server to automatically shutdown at 23:59 and startup at 8:00. The startup is handled through by bios but the shutdown is to be managed through cron. I thought I had this working, I actually swear I had it working because I thought the uptime command showed the appropriate uptime. I happened to be up and was streaming a movie from my server when at the time it should've shutdown it actually just restarted. If I run the shutdown -h now command by itself it works well but the scheduled command just restarts the server. Here is the what is shown when I enter crontab -e.

The system goes shutting down. Eveything looks fine, and the main console shows all process being stopped. In the end it says "System will now halt". Then a few seconds later, it restarts. It is unclear what is causing this, because nothing is written to the screen. It just goes blank and starts rebooting. Looking afterwards in syslog doesn't show anything also.
I guess there is some bash shell trick to run poweroff when an other command is over, like let's say su -c 'yum update'.
Creating a shell script with these two commands, the one below the other, would be sufficient? I can't try it now.
I've added entries to my Openbox menu labeled Reboot and Shutdown. Problem is, reboot and shutdown h only work as root, and I never login as root. I've tried su-to-root -c reboot, but the menu entries remain unresponsive. I do not have sudo installed because I feel it is a security issue. However, I found that sudo reboot works with the menu entry, but only if my account is set to use sudo without a password in /etc/sudoers. I use tint2 as my panel, but have had no luck with finding a shutdown/reboot button.
