I have an Asus Eee 1000H with win7 installed dual booting with the NBremix. I installed Adobe CS3 to the win7 side and everytime I run CS3 it wipes out grub causing me to use the live-stick and re-install grub.

I'm running 10.04 LTS (64 bit) During a recent attempt at dual booting Windows 7, the Windows installer made a boot partition on the wrong drive, formatting the drive, and therefore destroying all my data.
The original partition was NTFS, and the new (unwanted partition) is NTFS.
Is there something in Linux I can do to recover the data that was there, or am I going to have to install Windows on yet another drive and use some Windows tools?
The data on this drive is extraordinarily important, containing ten years of digital photos, my source codes, and musical compositions (protools sessions etc).
So I have my netbook triple-booted with Windows XP, vanilla Ubuntu, and Kubuntu Netbook (Installed in that order).
I however would love to remove Kubuntu Netbook from my computer, but unfortunately, since I installed it last, it is the Linux OS that owns the current default GRUB files that the BIOS reads first.
Can someone please tell me what to do to remove the Kubuntu partition and restore the default GRUB to my vanilla Ubuntu so I can still use my computer? I've done this incorrectly before and freaked myself out because whilst trying to access the GRUB, my computer couldn't find it because the partition that the files were originally on was gone. Haha. I don't even know how it got fixed.
I have a full install on a dedicated partition. And the problem persists. I have tacked it down to the driver for my video card [nVidia 9600m GS]. When I disable the driver, it somewhat returns to normal [it works fine on shut down, but boot up is still buggy]. However, this makes Docky complain about compositing [it will still work, but there's a black void around it] not being enabled. I also assume that lacking the driver will cause problems if I try to do anything 3D.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently using the windows version of gVim to edit source files on a networked drive mapped to a linux system, as well as local files created in cygwin.
The problem is that the windows version of gVim destroys the original file permissions on the respective systems. IE: Files on cygwin are defaulted to 077. When edited by the windows version of vim they are saved as 777.This problem doesn't even occur when using ms-notepad (as well as all other editors I've tried), so I am not quite sure why gVim does it.
A possible solution would be to use cygwin's gVim for everything, but that's rather cumbersome as it requires running an x11 environment to support it, and it causes some problems when running some commands from within gVim (or vim for that matter) when working on the networked drive.
Any ideas how I might be able to maintain the existing file permissions?
This morning while on a different machine the problem with cygwin did not occur. Cygwin & gVim were the same version, however the other machine is running WinXP while the machine the problem is occurring on runs Win7.
I have an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD it works I would like to know how I could wipe the HDD, but there are some complications. It doesn't run the live CD because of something on the HDD so I'd like to be able to wipe the HDD without having to run or install Ubuntu i can get up a command line thing though by pressing Esc from the graphic setup. By the way I can get to the setup screen with the options install run scan for defects etc but when i click on install or run it stops after a while.

So with my old laptop, I am giving it to a charity who refurb them and send them overseas.Not that I do not trust them, but they say they wipe the hard drive to US Department of Defense standard 5220.22M. I just bought a netbook, HP DV2-1039WM, which comes with Vista. I wiped the hard drive and installed Ubuntu 9.10. A problem has arisen in that it doesn't see any wireless card. There is a button on the side with an indicator light that is used to enable/disable wireless. The light is amber and, according to the manual, it is supposed to be blue when wireless is working. The manual just says "push the button" to turn it on, which doesn't do anything.
I recently installed a dual boot on my desktop with Windows 7/Ubuntu, which doesn't have any problems. Are there driver/hardware issues with the setup I am trying on this netbook? The HP website only has drivers for windows OSes listed. Theoretically, I could reinstall windows and/or do a dual-boot, but I'd rather just keep only Ubuntu on it if possible.
I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Karmic on a separate partition the other day, and mistakenly formatted the dedicated boot partition. This has left the boot entry in Fedora's fstab incorrect, and - obviously - removed the initrd and vmlinuz images for Fedora from the boot partition. Is there any way to reinstate these? Someone on the Ubuntu forums recommended chrooting into the Fedora partition, but I'm not sure I understand how that works. It's my own stupid fault for formatting the boot partition, but we live and learn!

First I tried the rpm, it went through the motions of installing but just disappeared. then I tied the .bin, got tot the installer, accepted the license, entered my root password, but it stopped installing with "an error occurred.
