Ubuntu :: Keyboard Doesn't At First Startup?

Apr 19, 2010

Problem one: My keyboard wasn't working. Solution one: Needed a new xorg.conf file.

Problem two: How to open a programme in terminal without rendering the terminal unresponsive until that programme is closed. Solution two: Append a '&' at the end of the command. For example: gedit test-file & [/SOLVED]

The problem is, my keyboard doesn't respond when I first boot into Ubuntu. None of the keys seem to work except the 'power' key (which helps me turn this laptop on or off). During the second boot, I incessantly press the space bar hoping for something to happen. Only when the boot process completes and I see my desktop does the keyboard, finally, respond. That is precisely how I'm typing this very moment. I had not faced this problem on Windows. I use a laptop (an old one but not too old).

Nothing happens during the first boot regardless the key I press on any time.
It is a nuisance to restart my laptop and periodically strain my space bar for the keyboard to respond on the second boot (It refuses to respond on the first boot, regardless of what I do).

When I, sometimes, open files using gedit through terminal by typing: ~$ gedit PATH, what happens is that I am then unable to use any other commands on the same terminal until I close gedit or open another terminal. I can type in the terminal but nothing happens until I exit gedit. I would like my terminal to be responsive whilst I am working on gedit simultaneously. I hope it is not impossible...

Ubuntu :: Mouse And Keyboard Not Recognized On Startup?

Dec 4, 2010

Sometimes when I reboot, I go to log on only to find that the mouse won't move and the keyboard does nothing. Well, the mouse moves, it's not glued to the desk or anything. But it doesn't move the cursor. The first few times this happened, I found that it was a music player or other USB device plugged in that somehow created confusion or something. So if I unplugged them and booted up again, everything was fine. And by booting up again, I mean I have to hold down the power button and forcibly shut the thing off, since I obviously can't do it the nice way with no mouse or keyboard.

Anyway, it's been doing it now more often, even with nothing plugged into the front USB ports. But I have found that if I disconnect my external hard drive, it boots up fine again. But that's obnoxious, because that hard drive is online as much as the computer itself, because it's my main repository for files. So I have to unplug the USB from the back of it, hold the cable so it doesn't fall behind the desk, turn on the computer, and then log in one-handed while I hold the cable (because if I just plug it back in before the desktop shows, it doesn't mount properly).

And I know it's an Ubuntu thing rather than a general computer thing because the bios options work just fine. In fact, the little NumLock light is on until the moment that Ubuntu starts up and shows the login dialog.

Ubuntu :: Bluetooth Keyboard/mouse At Startup

Feb 27, 2011

I have a MS bluethooth keyboard/mouse, and a USB bluetooth dongle

In 10.1 I can add both with no problems - but I have to explicitly tell ubuntu to connect to the devices at each machine reboot, which means plugging in a wired mouse first

Does anyone know how I can set the machine to connect automatically at every startup to both my keyboard and my mouse? I found a set of instructions here:

But it is from 2007 and I'm not sure its still correct?

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Stops Working On Startup

Apr 15, 2011

Sometimes Ubuntu 10.04 will get into a state where the system stops booting when it apparently attempts to initialize the USB keyboard (keyboard goes dead and never lights up again)(Saitek Eclipse II keyboard).

It either works, or doesn't work consistently regardless of reboot. I don't know what makes it stop working. (Or start working) Recovery mode doesn't work either. Or the saved -21 kernal.

I have an ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 and have the -30 generic kernal.

I can dual-boot into WinXP just fine.

The cursor blinks, but it never gets further, I've had it hanging like that for a day (I started the box before I went to school, and when I got home, I found that it never booted completely)

If I connect the keyboard, the box boots fine..

Keyboard works on grub menu. Also works now in XP. Tried reconnecting (sync & plug unplug) different usb ports and nothing. Gave it a few minutes on startup and still nothing. Plugged in a PS2 keyboard and the lights just blink after startup and it will not work either.

Apr 19, 2011

this may not be the right place to ask this, but my sister has a macbook and the keyboard does not want to work. i have looked online and i see that the main cause of this problem is in Leopard (correct me if im wrong). So i was wondering if perhaps using linux would solve this problem or if the problem is more hardware related than os related.

Also, how would i go about booting into a linux cd? since u need to enter some keyboard keys at startup and assuming that won't work, is there another way?

Ubuntu :: Pdf Logical Numbering/index Modification

Mar 17, 2011

I used this command to merge a book I downloaded by chapters into a single file (I'm putting it here so I don't forget : )

Code:
gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=book.pdf 0*.pdf

As you know, many (or most?) books number the first pages using roman numbers, so in the pdf the page #1 is actually the logical page #12.

Also, the combined file doesn't have a logical index (section, subsection, etc.) showing in okular or evince.

Since I have many pdfs in similar condition I was wondering if there's a way to change the numbering to make the first "n" pages use logical roman numbers and add a logical index.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Option To Sign In With Password To Allow Modification?

Jul 22, 2010

I just installed 10.04 on my Alienware. If I plug my headphones in it does not mute my laptop speakers. I have lurked the forums read a few suggestions that involve modifying the Alsa-base.conf file but when I try and modify me it doesn't give me the option to save. I'm assuming because I'm not root but shouldn't it give me the option to sign in with my password to allow modification?

I've installed alsa and tried clicking the headphones button and it just mutes everything. If I unmute the headphones click disappears there is no sliders for the headphone option. I have a HDA Intel : Realtek ALC889A.

Ubuntu :: Image Viewers That Can Sort By Modification Date?

Sep 15, 2010

I like ordering my images my date modified, but Eye of GNOME only lets you view them by alphabetical order.

Important features for me are: Going through items with the arrow keys. Zooming in and out with the mouse wheel. Being able to sort by modification date, type, or name. Being able to right click and open with either another window of the same viewer, or with another viewer. Having a simple interface

So far, I've tried:

Eye of GNOME - I love how simple it is, and if it wasn't for this sorting problem I'd keep using it. Well, that and the fact that you can't right click and open an image in a separate Eye of GNOME window while continuing to scroll images in the current window.

gThumb - Damn. So close to being a winner. Can't pass images with the arrow keys or zoom in and out with the mouse wheel, but I can sort by modification date, it's simple, and can open another window of the same viewer. But those first two points are also important for me.

Fspot - A little too cluttered when opening a single image. I don't really need to see a top panel with the other images, even if it's nice. I can go through images with the arrow keys, and zoom in and out, but no sorting by modification date.

Shotwell - Shotwell's viewer is pretty fast and simple, however it has lots of flaws for me: can't sort by modification date, can't zoom in and out with mouse wheel, can't open an image in another window while viewing it. At least it's simple and I can navigate with the arrow keys.

OpenSUSE Network :: Wondershaper Modification To Exclude Lan Should Be Included

I have just entered the world of openSUSE after a chain of other linux distros over the last few years. Btw I love it, its already my favourite. It is useless for most people who are behind a router, because any transfers between same-network computers are subject to the same rules = slow and unnecessary.I used #256461 - wondershaper: Option to limit range of rules? - Debian Bug report logs for these mods.

Suggested /usr/sbin/wshaper.htb

Code:

#!/bin/bash

# Wonder Shaper

Should this be filed as a bug report? It seems like an obvious feature to me.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Grub.conf Modification - Auto Booting

Feb 1, 2010

I have windows vista on one sata HDD, and fedora on a second sata HDD. After installing fedora of course the grub is auto booting fedora. I would like vista to be the default O/S. I dont care if i modify the grub file to have it manually boot vista, or to remove the grub interface all together, i just want it to auto boot vista. My bios is programed to boot my vista drive before my fedora drive, however it keeps booting the grub and it boots fedora, which i find kind of odd. below is the contents of my grub.conf file:

[Code]....

*NOTE: i have already tried changing the 'default=0' to 'default=1' and restarting the computer, as i saw in a different post on these forums, however that did not fix my problem. Im guessing its because i have the operating systems on two seperate drives, where the other guy just had them on a single drive.

**EDIT: after posting i had to modify lines 6 and 10 of my grub.conf file because it had smileys at the end lol. i put a space in between the 8 and the ) for posting purposes only, my actuall file does not have these spaces.

General :: Partition Modification Made Windows Crash ?

Feb 8, 2010

I have an HP laptop with both Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows Vista installed on it.

The other day I noticed I was running out of space in the main linux partition (the / partition, not the /home partition), so I decided to move some space from the Windows partition and move it to the linux one. I used a GParted Live CD to do that.

My partitions are ordered as follows:
Windows Vista partition (NTFS)
Main linux partition / (ext3)
Linux home partition /hom (ext3)
HP RECOVERY (NTFS - I don't know what it is, it just comes with HP laptops that have Vista on them)

So I shrank partition 1, and then "moved" partition 2 to enlarge it (GParted said everything was alright).

After doing that, I went to my linux and everything seemed to be fine, I'm also quite sure I had access to my Windows partition as always. But today I tried to start my Windows and it just got stuck on the "loading" stage (that screen that says "Microsoft Corporation" and has a green loading bar). So I shut the computer down manually (by holding the power button for a few seconds). After doing that a couple of time, I went to my linux, which worked just fine, but I was not able to go to the Windows partition. You can see how GParted looks now for my computer:[url]

As you can see, the first partition (/dev/sda1), which is supposed to be the Windows partition, is not mounted and the system doesn't seem to be able to read it properly. Here is my attempt to mount it manually:

Code:

Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use. Choose one action:

Choice 1: If you have Windows then disconnect the external devices by clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the Windows taskbar then shutdown Windows cleanly.

Choice 2: If you don't have Windows then you can use the 'force' option for your own responsibility. For example type on the command line: mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /windows/ -o force

Or add the option to the relevant row in the /etc/fstab file: /dev/sda1 /windows/ ntfs-3g force 0 0
