Ubuntu :: 11.04 Upgrade When Using Macbuntu?
Apr 29, 2011
I downloaded Macbuntu onto my Ubuntu system a few weeks ago, and was wondering whether downloading the newest Ubuntu update would conflict with my current set up? Should i uninstall Macbuntu first?

I can now no longer access my desktop. the only way I can access ubuntu is through the recovery kernel, and logging in through the command prompt. I installed this theme using install.sh also with the package is uninstall.sh though I can't access it through commands.
What happened is I downloaded the package, extracted it and ran the install.sh. It went through all of the setting up that it was supposed to do and in the end looked like it was working like it was supposed to. However my compiz got shut off so I decided to turn it back on through the desktop settings. Everything looked fine, I hit ok to accept the settings then that's when my screen went haywire. Everything on the screen was blown apart so I had to reboot, hoping that would fix it. now when I try to log back in It will go to the splash screen then go all black before the login page.I've tried resetting Gnome with rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity though that will not work either. I guess I need to have access to the desktop for that to work. I don't know what to do, can my Os be saved or am I looking at a reinstall.I think if I can disable compiz perhaps long enough to boot I might be able to get rid of that theme. thoug I can't find any info on how to do it. everyanswer I find is based on having the desktop running and using gtk programs such as metacity --replace.anyone have any ideas on how I can access my desktop again?

I had Macbuntu. Worked perfectly. Long story, but I had to uninstall and reinstall Ubuntu. The OS works fine now, but Macbuntu doesn't work anymore. I mean it slightly does, but the visual effects that make it feel like a real Mac don't work anymore. And the dock doesn't show up as well, so I keep on losing my windows. Basically the only things that do change is the color, the minimize, exit, maximize, and the taskbar. The wobbly effect (even though I did put yes in terminal) doesn't work, nor does the splash effects in the startup screen, etc.
If this is any help, now when I install it, half of the time I get this error that says:"The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GlobalMenu_PanelApplet""

I saw Macbuntu and Mac4lin are awesome looking choices, but I am worried about the legality. Are these two legal in the United States of America? Do they go against the Mac OS X EULA and copyrights?

I have installed Macbuntu theme recently and it changed my ubuntu look to snow leopard including the global menu. I used Mac4lin earlier and was satisfied with that. But this macbuntu theme changes the entire look more like mac and it comes bundled with global menu.
See my current desktop environment:
(I've recently uninstalled Docky and installed Cairo Dock instead.)
Now, there's only one thing that Macbuntu is missing. That's the splash screen. By default, you see the ubuntu logo during bootup and shutdown. But mac4lin changes it to a gray background with an apple logo on it; which is awesome. But macbuntu doesn't come with this.
I've gone through mac4lin files. Inside its plymouth folder, there is a folder named "Mac-Bootup" which contains "mac-bootup.plymouth," "mac-booktup.script" and several images (dots, apple logo, etc).
Now the question is, how do I install this plymouth from terminal? I will have to install mac4lin first to get the splash screen, then uninstall it and reinstall the current macbuntu. Which is a long mess as you can see.

However, I don't like using Apple's logo, it seems somewhat silly to me, I'm only interested in the overall appearence. During the installation, I chose the Ubuntu logo wherever I was asked, but it seems I didn't have a choice for the login screen. How can I remove that bitten apple?I found that I can set a new logo in Ubuntu Tweak, but I have no idea where to find the original Ubuntu logo file.

I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade

My story thus far:I have a working, fairly customized desktop environment running Ubuntu Studio 10.10.Yesterday, I literally wasted the entire day attempting to upgrade to, and then reverting from, Ubuntu Studio 11.04 (never forget to do a grub-install when restoring your system to a previous state from backups).I am not bashing 11.04! That is not the purpose of this thread, although I believe that Unity needs some maturity, and because of this I probably won't upgrade until the next LTS.
What I would like to know is this: Is there a way that I can get the various and sundry upgrade managers to stop telling me about the 11.04 upgrade availability? I'd really like to not see itI feel somewhat like a Luddite every time I do.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

I am trying to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10. I have never had a problem upgrading before with the Update Manager. Now I get an error message when using the Update Manager. The message says, "Could not calculate the upgrade". See screenshots. I also checked the package manager for broken packages and came up with nothing.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.

Using Lubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled Apache Server (it was once installed). But the update manager is cites many new Apache updates that I need. But again Apache is not installed anymore. Synaptic says it's not installed. I have a checker for orphaned packages it says nothing about Apache. Why does the updater say this? Maybe there's a "residue" of Apache somewhere?

I decided to give Ubuntu another try and installed the Studio version. During my installation it asked whether I wanted the Realtime kernel or not. I chose yes as I figured it could come in handy when I work with audio. However since this version isn't exactly Ubuntu 10.10 as promoted , I decided to install Ubuntu Desktop on top of it (trough apt-get). For the full experience. ( im not even sure if it just installed extra software and added some folders)Now my questions are:1:The Realtime kernel is it now overwritten by any other kernel that came with the Desktop installation?
2: How will the updates handle my installation once i want to upgrade to, lets say, 11.04.I'm not really sure about how the system will look at things to upgrade. Will it look at my Desktop installation or my Ubuntu Studio? ( concerning the Realtime kernel as well).Just to add some more: I'm a total Linux Noob(although im not scared to use the Terminal)

I can't upgrade. I get: Quote: Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'skype-common' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
This is most likely a transient problem, please try again later. I tried again several times in different days and it is the same. I have 10.4 recently updated from my original installation of 9.10. I think it was not a pre-release, I did it automatically from the website and it took a long time. As far as I know, all I have installed is official, except perhaps Skype itself.
