I Installed Ubuntu 9.10 on April 12th On April 14th I got a screen message advising me to download and install 257 update programs. The download got up to at least program 241. Thats the last one I remember seeing. Then the screen brightened for about one second and I got a message saying that Ubuntu had to be restarted to finish downloading.I restarted and this is the screen I got.

I, like many people, don't have access to fast internet at home (only 56k). That makes downloading the hundreds of mb of data impossible. But, like pretty much all of those same people, I do have access to local libraries. So, I would like to know the best way to download updates at a library, then come back and install them with ubuntu. The version is 10.04 32-bit, and is 100% stock (just installed from CD), and I want to bring it up-to-date.

My KPackageKit is not downloading any update, it shows updates, I click apply, I authenticate, then it asks me to accept an agreement, after which it returns to an empty KPackageKit (as if there were no updates). If I open it again, there are the possible updates again (naturally, since it didn't download anything).

I'm a bit of a noob at Ubuntu (I can use the terminal and stuff though), and I want to know if I can specify a custom server for downloading updates and packages.I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to use Adam Internet's FileArena server: [URL]... It's not listed in the list of servers and I want to know how I can add it or use it(because downloads from there don't count towards my download allowance).

I have noticed that when installing Jessie, the graphical installer downloads updates to packages while installing if connected via Ethernet to the Internet. Remaining disconnected solves this problem. Is there any way to avoid this and install without downloading files other than apt lists?

I currently mirror the updates repository to my computer using rsync. I was wondering if I could save space and bandwidth by only rsyncing the .delta.rpm files? Are there any disadvantages to this or does zypper/YAST handle updates just fine with it?

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

I'm running CentOS 5.4 and noticed that for the past month there haven't been any new updates showing up either on 'yum check-update' or 'yum update' (I'm interested in basic and security updates). Although this may be right, I wonder if there is an online reference where I can check the updates that are released for CentOS (security bulletins) and make sure if there is anything wrong with my update system.

I know apt-get has a switch to make it download only. Then, I guess the packages can be installed later using dpkg -i ? But...
Where are the packages put when using apt-get to download only? Can I specify where to put them when I use the apt-get command? What if there are required packages to meet dependencies?... are they stored in the same place automatically? If I install later using dpkg, do I have to explicitly install the dependency packages or will they be pulled in from the same directory automagically at the time of install?

I am using Fedora 13 and I have one program (wine) that I need to start grabbing for the updates-testing repo instead of the default repositories in order to get newer versions. I think I can figure out how to add that repository, but I need to know if there are any others I need to disable or any other changes I need to make to my system so that I don't confuse my set up with conflicting updates.
Also, is there anything special I need to do to be sure that only that one program is grabbed from the testing repo when I run regular updates?

I've been trying to download DJL for a while now and I keep getting error messages. I've been looking at instructions on how to do it and I do what they say. I download it and then I extract it. I think I'm getting confused on where I need to extract it to. I'm very new to this and I'm trying to learn. I've been extracting it to my desktop... then I enter into the terminal sh djl.sh and it gives me sh: Can't open djl.sh. I have the newest version of Ubuntu.

I am struggling with downloading ubuntu 10.10 on to computer. I want to keep my windows 7 operational. I have downloaded ubuntu onto a CD. I have partitioned my C drive to install. Has 61GB space free. I expected a box to come up when installing that allowed me to install along side windows but none did. Only 2 options available, one to use whole disk space which I presumed would erase windows or 2, to do it manually (advanced) dreaded words for me!. What am I doing wrong? or what do I need to do. Also have just joined this site and have to say took me a while to work out how to post a message. Maybe some simple box to point new users to gat quick answers to their problems?

My update manager is not downloading anything. However when I click the view files individually I notice "hit" and "failed" at the start of each download.
I ran this code:
apt-get update
output:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory
