Ubuntu :: Can't Get Java To Work

Mar 13, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu in the computer that is linked up to my television in my lounge. I want to make it so that I can control it using remote droid from my android mobile phone - turns the phone into a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I tested it on my Windows PC in the office and had it up and running in under a minute. I've been working on Ubuntu now for over an hour and am getting fed up with it. The installation instructions are the same. You just download a folder called RemoteDroidServer and then double click 'RemoteDroidServer.jar in Windows this just opens the application and you're ready to go. In Ubuntu, rather than opening the application, it opens a folder full of files.

I'm guessing this is because Java isn't properly installed on Ubuntu. I tried to install it from the same website I used for Java on Windows, using these instructions:

[URL]

However, there is absolutely no way I can get them to work, pretty much every step is a massive problem, so I gave up.

I then went to synaptic package manager to see what I could install from there, however, there are hundreds of packages that come up.

how I can install Java so that when I open the .jar file, it runs the application - as with Windows.

Ubuntu :: Java Won't Work With Firefox 3.6?

Jan 28, 2010

I downloaded Firefox 3.6 from the Mozilla website, and installed Java Runtime and Java Browser Plugin from Ubuntu Software Center, but Java will not work within Firefox, it works with Firefox 3.5.7 installed from the repositories, but I really want to use Firefox 3.6. I've even tried UbuntuZilla, without any success. This is annoying as I visit a lot of Java enabled websites.

Ubuntu :: Getting Java To Work In Firefox?

May 5, 2010

Right now I'm running Firefox 3.6.4. In ~/.mozilla/plugins I have a link to the Java plugin. I'm using Java version 6 update 20.

For some reason, Firefox will not acknowledge that I have the Java plugin installed. It won't show up under Add-ons > Plugins, and if I go to a web page that requires Java, it says I don't have it installed.

I've even moved my ~/.mozilla/firefox directory, allowing Firefox to create a new empty preferences directory, and Java still won't show up.

However, Java shows up just fine in Firefox 3.5. How do I get Java enabled?

General :: Java Sound Doesn't Work?

May 26, 2010

I just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a .wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions.

Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms!

Ubuntu :: Ctrl+ (Any Alphabet Letter) Doesn't Work In Java Apps

May 3, 2011

I've Intellij Idea and Netbeans installed on my Ubuntu desktop. Both worked fine while I was on 10.10.After upgrading to 11.04 both of them became irresponsive to Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V/Ctrl+{Any alphabet letter} combinations. However these combinations work in non-Java apps (e.g. gedit).Besides that Ctrl+Alt+L (Lock screen) is not handled by the system, no matter what application is active.Disabling unity does not help. Starting in ubuntu classic w/o effects does not help either.

Debian Configuration :: Swiftfox - Flash And Java Don't Work

Jan 8, 2011

I enabled java and flash in Iceweasel 3.5.16 via the related/required packages in the repository so flash-nonfree (or whatever it is) and the related java one. I didn't install either flash or java manually so no plugins that way. Flash and java works in Iceweasel. If I wanted to try Swiftfox, what do I do? I have it installed but both flash and java don't work.

I assume that one has to do the manual installs for both so go to both Flash and Java official sites and install the related Linux package. Will this conflict with my Iceweasel-based java/flash packages? Or do they go in separate directories and files? I don't want a conflict or interference and thus, don't want to break what's working.

OpenSUSE :: Java Plugin Doesn't Work In Firefox 3.6

Mar 14, 2010

It seems that there is no way for me to install java plugin in firefox 3.6. I've already read some threads about similar problems but none of the solutions that worked for other people work for me. So I decided to open a new thread. Following instructions of other threads, I uninstalled all java packages and installed again just the three that you can see below, but nothing changed.

Ubuntu :: Install Latest Java Version - Java SE 6 Update 24?

Feb 18, 2011

If you are interested, Java SE 6 Update 24 is available. The Check Java Version link in my signature will tell you if you are up to date or not. The Update Java Version link in my signature will tell you how to obtain and install the latest version. The 32 bit version install directions are on the left side of that page and the 64 bit instructions are on the right side.

Just remember to remove the current version before installing the new one as it says in the instructions. The remove instructions are below the install instructions. Also, in Step 9 - "Now you'll want to tell the system, that there's a new Java version available." See the note below it that says if you get an error upon entering the command once, enter it a second time. I have to do that and sometimes forget. Just thought I would mention that. These instructions are already setup for version 6 update 24, but they can be modified for any update and they will work. I have been using these instructions for a couple of years and they work.

Ubuntu :: Eclipse Plugins Don't Work / Doesn't Install A Bunch Of Libraries And Eclipse Cannot Recognize Standard Java Files?

Jan 19, 2010

I have been using Eclipse to program in Java for a long time, and have been using Jigloo for most of my GUI design. Recently I decided to try out the C/C++ plugin. I tried installing it, but it did not work. After many attempts, I finally gave up. However, after uninstalling it I found that Jigloo had stopped working. Any other plugins I try to install now also don't work. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling plugins, and reinstalling eclipse, but nothing I have done fixes it. Although eclipse says that the software has been installed, nothing shows up in the features list or the plugins list.

Another problem: When I install eclipse from the repositories, it doesn't install a bunch of libraries and eclipse cannot recognize standard java files.

Slackware :: Installing Java Error - When Trying To Run A Java App With The Firefox Plugin - Browser Crashe

May 29, 2011

Code: ~ $ /usr/java/jre1.6.0_25/bin/java -showversion Error occurred during initialization of VMjava/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

That's the error I get. When trying to run a java app with the firefox plugin, the browser simply crashes if it's the 64bit java or tells me it's not installed if it's the 32bit version.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I think it has something to do with leftover gunk from a previous version I misinstalled(Is that even a word?) Anyway, the only thing that google could come up with was a solution for windows which laid blame on Bill Gates for having a bunch of pf (java prefetch) files stuffed into c:windows for no apparent reason. The solution was to delete them, but I can't seem to find the java prefetch folder in linux. The method I used is downloading the rpm from java.com the rpm2tgz then installpkg then cp libnpjp2.so to firefox plugins folder.
