OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 64bit Install Freezes After Reboot During Autoconfiguration - GeForce 9300 Chipset (MCP7A)
Sep 15, 2010I just wanted to install openSUSE 11.3 64bit. Installation works fine until reboot request. It switches to console, saying that it tries to load without reboot, screen becomes black, i got a cursor with animated wait-symbol and then it freezes. Can't move the mouse, no reaction on keyboard inputs, HDD-led not blinking. If I reset my PC and boot the new installation, it says that an error occurred and asks me to complete the unfinished installation. It starts auto-configuration and freezes again at about 3%. I tried again and some time it did not start the graphical yast but in textmode. The freeze came at the same position, but it posted many lines on console with error messages. I could not scroll, so I saw only parts of it, saying kernel panic and many addresses.
I guessed that it has to do with my chipset and graphics card, it is a nVidia GeForce 9300 chipset (MCP7A) with onboard graphics. It works fine with openSUSE 11.2 64bit by the way, but it was not supported in earlier versions than 11.2. So I tried to install it with proprietary drivers. I started the installation again and added the nVidia repository and a Packman repo and selected the driver which works fine on 11.2. Error was same as above. Next I tried an openSUSE 11.3 32bit Live CD that came with some PC magazine and lay around and it is booting and works fine!
This was confusing to me, so I wanted to try the 64bit version of the live CD. Which was again not booting. It freezes at some part, maybe when it tries to start X. But it also freezes booting with 'nomodeset' (found it somewhere here), in VESA mode and even in textmode! So i guess it's not X what causes the freeze. But it is sometime at the end of booting up, as far as I can say. I would like to use the 64bit version but I don't know where to search for the problem. I checked every checksum before burning, so a broken media should not be the reason

Nov 16, 2009I installed openSUSE earlier today, I have Windows 7 on this PC too. I installed using all the default option.Installed fine, booted up. Working perfectly. Used it for a few hoursI changed an option to enable the desktop effects (the 3d effects). When I did this the computer froze completely, I had to pull the plug.When I rebooted the computer froze on reboot.I get to the point where it displays the graphical screen, then the screen switches to the brighter green, higher resloution graphical screen. I get the white progress bar under the chameleon. It gets to half way. Then the mouse cursor becomes quite flickery and slow, and it doesn't progress any further. Again to reboot I have to pull the plug. (Although interestingly the contrast buttons (F4/F5 on my laptop still work).Steps I have taken.I have repeated the install, does exaclty the same thing.
I have downloaded the 32 bit version (I originally installed the 64 bit) and again resinstalled - does exactly the same thing)I have hit escape so I could see the not graphical boot screen, unfortunately it get past that, goes to the graphic screen/progress bar and then hangs at the same place.The LiveCD (running from the CD still works fine)I really dont know what to try. If nothing else could you tell me the quickest way to remove it, delete the grup bootloader and recover the space it took from my partitions.
CentOS 5 :: 5.5 Install Freezes At Libgnome Install?
May 25, 2010I have a old compaq PC that I want to use for LINUX work.
Hardware:
KM266 MB.
AMD Athlon XP2400 CPU
On board video
On board network
1 GB RAM (2 512 stcks)
2 - WD 80 GB PATA drives
Have done the following:
1. verified DVD
2. verified hard drives
3. Removed ATI rage based AGP video card.
4. removed soundcard
5. removed old belkin wireless
6. Cleared CMOS
Install procedure:
Clean install - remove all partions etc.
Setup RAID1 using both drives:
- /boot, swap, / (md0, md1, md2)
Default DHCP for network.
Install proceeds till 8 minutes left on install.
Freeze happens with Installing libgnome..... Only option is to power off and start over (which is getting a little old at this point).
I'm thinking of just doing a standard (NO RAID) install and to see if that works

Aug 28, 2010Well, it's a weird problem.
I had an old desktop pc, and I downloaded and burned both Karmic and Lucid desktop and alternate ISOs. I installed the karmic alternate in that PC, and things went smoothly.
Now a friend of mine gave me his old Packard Bell Easynote R laptop. It has a centrino 1.6GHz mother, 1GB RAM and a 60GB disk. The GPU (Geforce Go 6200) overheats a lot, but I have lurked around and found out this is a common issue.
Well, so I installed Win XP, and recently I wanted to install xubuntu here as well.
Thing is, the desktop install freezes. It does nothing, I can't even use the Live CD.
The alternate install goes well until the proper install, and then starts complaining about missing files in the CD.
Two things: The CD is perfect, I just tried it on my other desptop PC and it goes well.
The laptop cd tray is well too, I install things all the time, and I tried to install a game after this happened, to try and see if it was this, but it appears to work just fine.
I don't know what could be causing this. And I don't know enough to change things at the install prompt (noacpi, thing like that, I don't know what they mean).
Has anyone experienced something like this? If so, is there a solution? I believe this laptop cannot boot from flash drive, in the boot menu I only have HD, CD-DVD, Floppy and LAN.
Another thing: If is a CD issue, is there a way to install this from LAN? (that is, using my other working PC to do this?)
Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Install Freezes On Welcome Screen
Jan 20, 2010I tried to install ubuntu 9.10 with the live cd, but my computer freezes on the welcome screen, where you select the language (for the second time).After that the ubuntu logo starts pulsing and after a while the welcome screen appears. At this point, my mouse and keyboard are frozen (though the laser is still working) and the only way is to turn my computer off. I can't even eject the cd rom.

May 2, 2010I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04, my PC was running 9.10 and 9.04 before, no problems. No problems on install (received some: end-request: i/o error, dev sr0, ....errors but as far as I know this doesn't mean anything but Cd Rom door open). When I started Ubuntu everything runs ok, (even audio that didn't worked on 9.04 ..finally)
After 1 or to minutes PC just freezed, everytime I restarted same thing. Tried using liveCD, id does crash anyway. I downloaded another ISO using bittorrent, installed, same result. When I open the Computer Monitor I see the System Memory scale up to 100%, then it alternates between processor 1 and 2, it goes to 100% then to about 9 and the other processor goes to 100 one at a time.

Ubuntu :: Display Freezes - Fresh 10.04 Install?
May 6, 2010I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I've tried Google searching and searching this forum, but haven't found something similar to my issue. Yesterday, I installed 10.04 off of the live CD onto my Toshiba Satellite A45-S250 laptop (P4 2.8, 1GB RAM).
The main problem is: -if the computer sits idle for more than about 5 minutes, the display will freeze. Image stays on screen, but the computer appears to be non responsive to all input.
-I thought it was a screen saver at first, but it happens even with the screen saver disabled. -I can still SSH into the machine from my desktop computer. I get a normal prompt, and it seems to be working fine from the shell. This is how I have been restarting or shutting down the machine after a freeze.
Secondary issues (that may help diagnose the problem):Even when this laptop appears to be functioning normally (pre-freeze), I cannot switch to any virtual terminals. Well, I can, but when I get there, something is not right. The text does not display properly. It sort of strobes on and off near the top right hand of the screen. -On shutdown, I get a weird colorful displays of what I can best describe as "static". The closing splash screen may just blink on for a second. Other than that the screen stays black until the machine shuts down.
-I've run versions of Ubuntu going back to Breezy on this machine, mostly without issue, and it has been a full time Ubuntu machine since the release of 8.04. These symptoms all appear to be related to video / display.
Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Freezes During Install
Aug 6, 2010I'm trying to install Lucid to an older PC, but it constantly freezes during the setup. Most of the time I can't even select whether I want to install or to try the OS, but sometimes I get past that. Once I got to the point where the installation was copying the files to the hard drive, but it froze once again at 5%. The PC's config is: 1,8 GHz AMD processor, 768 MB DDR1 memory, 200 GB HDD, ATI 9200 VGA and a DVD drive. According to the minimum reqs for lucid this should be more than enough, yet Lucid froze once while in Live CD mode. Should I try an older ubuntu version? Or could this be something more serious, ie hardware issue in which case you guys can't help.

Oct 16, 2010I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 running on my Asus laptop. I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows, as I will need it for work. It was installed via side-by-side and re-sized the partition
The installation of Ubuntu was flawless and works great, but now when I boot to Windows, its will randomly freeze, sometimes in 1 minute, sometimes within 10 minutes.
The only way I can solve this issue, is to either perform a disk scan from windows or restore the MBR.
The disk scan works, and Windows run fine, although If I boot Ubuntu again, run that for awhile, then boot windows again the problem returns.
Restoring the MBR works as well, though without a dualboot, its useless
I have also tried EasyBCD and replaced GRUB with Windows boot manager, though same problems.

May 19, 2011I have an HP dx5150 with Ubuntu 11.04. I recently added 2 new memory chips (total 4) with the same specifications as the originals. The memory is recognized by the BIOS and Memtest returns no errors. The computer boots normally and functions normally for an hour or so, and then freezes. When it freezes it does not accept any input and the screen gets displays a bunch of small green or purple lines. Here is the output from lshw:

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Freezes On USB Drive Install?
Jun 25, 2011I'm really struggling to install 11.04 on old AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.81 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM, running XP I've used the same USB drive installer to put 11.04 on my netbook and had no problems at all.
So I boot into the install page click to install then click forward at the next page and it always freezes a little after this or sometimes before. I checked my BIOS settings and I pretty sure I've adjusted what I needed to according to the pre-install guidance on Ubuntu help.

Jul 31, 2011I'm trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 on this old desktop that is currently running WinXP. I get to the menu to choose to try ubuntu, install, or boot hard drive. I choose Install and it begins to load with those 5 dots then after a minute or so it just freezes on that screen. I then try to choose the "try" option and it does the same thing, although takes slightly longer before it freezes.I just happen to have a v8.10 disc laying around so I try that. I get to the same options menu, it loads, and then shows a black screen with a white blinking underscore. Same goes for when I use the "try" option.Specs:2.53GHz P41.5GB RAM250GB HDD

Nov 2, 2010I can't install Ubuntu (10.10) on my desktop pc. I tried 4 different cds (they might be scratched) and it's the same thing.
I ran already MemTest and there were no problems.
Everything is ok until i want to install, press Forward and it says "connected to AC power, 2GB free disk...", then i press Forward again and it freezes completely.
It's not so old my pc, i have Win 7 Ultimate on it.
RAM: 512mb
Processor: Intel P4 - 2.4 Ghz
I'm thinking about installing 10.4 and then upgrade the whole system (even that it's gonna take me about half a day), will it work?

Jul 29, 2010Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, GNOME desktop. Previous install (same OS) gave an error when switching users. Did a fresh install, and now the keyboard and mouse freeze. This happens almost every session. I have to force shutdown. Sometimes it happens in 5 minutes, other times it happens in 4 hours. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but the Ubuntu problems are starting to get to me. I really want to use this. I like it, but I'm getting frustrated. 9.10 had wireless problems, and now I'm getting this freezing thing. Both the keyboard and mouse are USB connections. Everything else works when the freeze occurs, i.e., video's still play, web browser is still displaying gifs, etc. Only the mouse and keyboard freeze. All other operations seem normal.

Aug 23, 2010Linux newb here. I was looking for a lightweight distro that I really like and Lubuntu was it. I installed in on all three of my comps with out issues and my old Dell desktop(512mb ram) is flying now. Way faster than XP even right after a fresh install of both on the same desktop. On my fourth install, my girlfriends old toshiba laptop, it installed fine. After the restart and reboot it gets to the Lubuntu logo with the 5 dots under it. It gets through 4 of the dots then freezes. I left it for 20 minutes and it was stuck.
I tried booting from cd again and check disc for defects. It said it found 2 files with errors, press any key to reboot. Which I did and it just booted right back into the freeze. Maybe since I have to manually make it boot from cd every time it was wanting to boot back into the CD after the disc check, I'm not sure. I tried burning a new iso on a slower speed, same thing for a total of 3 reinstalls with the same effect. The only thing different about this install compared to my others is:
A) I had to flash the bios from windows before I started to even get the damn thing to be able to boot from CD
B) I decided to just wipe XP and install Lubuntu on the whole drive.
Ubuntu :: Clean 10.10 Install Successful - But System Sometimes Freezes
Oct 20, 2010After 8 years of using Mac, which I do enjoy, I decided to jump into the open source community. So I bought a brand new Thinkpad SL510 and installed Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) using the entire disk, thus erasing Windows.
The installation process was very easy and the system generally works great. It's fast and I love the interface.
Just encountered one annoying issue which I don't think I should be confronted with, using a freshly installed Unix-based OS: a few times, the system entirely froze. I couldn't move the mouse pointer anymore, the keyboard no longer responded (eg. when hitting Shift Lock the light didn't come on). Waited for several minutes but nothing happened at all. So I had to turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button.
This has only happened a few times so far, but a few times too many. When it happened, I only had Firefox open, or Firefox and Twinkle. The last time it happened, the screen colours gradually went gray before everything came to a halt.

Nov 25, 2010I installed lubuntu 10.10 on my old computer (pentium II, 192 mb ram) but when i try to boot it passes the purple screen and feezes just after showing:
* Starting AppArmor profiles [OK]
* Starting NTP server ntpd [OK]
It was installed on From liveusb with the harddrive plugged into another computer cus the old ones bios doesnt support usb boot.

Feb 9, 2011I recently installed ubuntu netbook remix on my laptop
(sony vaio 1.5GHZ core 2 duo, 1GB ram, intel integrated graphics)
and it was working fine until a faulty power outlet caused my laptop to turn off and on around 2 or 3 times in quick succession.
When i went to reboot, a screen appears with "GNU GRUB version ... " written on the top and i have the option to boot 4 different things, 2 of which are labeled " (recovery mode) " along with the option to do a " Memory Test "
Ive tried booting into all four, and each time a bunch of text streams by and then stops, leaving the prompt " (initramfs)_ " which stays forever, and means nothing to me.
So i decided to try and re-install using the same usb drive that worked before, and the installer boots up fine, but freezes once i click "Forward" to initiate the installation from within the ubuntu OS being run off the USB drive.
I tried using a few different USB drives, and a CD, i even tried installing regular Ubuntu 10.10, but the same thing happens each time - the installer doesn't respond once i click "forward" to initiate the installation.

Jun 11, 2011I burned a disk with Ubuntu on it, put it in and used the "try" function. I spent a couple hours on it and liked it. I decided to hit the install button on the desktop, it all went smoothly. It froze during the "logging off" process, so I cold booted it. Upon restart, I was prompted again to try/install Ubuntu. (Again, I've already installed it, or so I think...) Well, what the heck. I install it again, it freezes and I let it be. I come back to find it, once again, on the try/install screen. I'm currently on the "try" function again. How do I cure my lack of an installed copy of Ubuntu?

Sep 1, 2011I bought a netbook and decided to add ubuntu to it through wubi. I did this to my desktop with no problem. I liked the fact that I could uninstall it easily through windows. However, on my netbook, when it gets to the install page, it stays there. I can connect to the internet, and suspend the installation but it won't budge from the install page that thanks you for downloading ubuntu and shows you all the stuff it can do.

Jul 24, 2011Yesterday I decided to dual-boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I successively instaled Ubuntu the first time using a flash drive. However, I found that I had made the partition for Ubuntu way to large. Having no idea what to do, I messed around with the partition sizes. Through a series of... mistakes, I deleted the two (the main space and swap space) linux partitions. When I restarted my computer I got the "partition not found" error. So from there, I burnt another ubuntu disk, (the flash drive I used had been reformatted for use on an Xbox) I am able to boot a live version of ubuntu on my computer. However, when I go to install Ubuntu, something goes wrong. After copying all the files, it goes into kernel panic about not syncing, and freezes.
I had looked up some advice on the web, and they said that it might be a memory error. However, Ubuntu 11.04 does not have the memtest86 or whatever, (at least that I could find) So I took out the smallest RAM stick (1 gig, leaving the laptop with 2 gigs of RAM) and it still freezes.
I included the story to see if I did something wrong with any of my steps that may have permanently done something bad to it.I know it does not sound like it, but yes, I only installed Linux yesterday, therefore, still a newb.
