I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso and I have the APTonCD program to make the cd. But I was wondering if thee is a script to redownload all the packages I've installed on the system? I usually keep my APT clean so I have nothing in the folder to use.
View 4 RepliesAfter weeks of hard work I have re-branded an ubuntu 9.04 installation. Like the logos, splash screen, theme, wallpaper and have even changed some of the menus. Now I want to make an installation CD out of this, so that I can distribute it to my friends, in that brand name. I'm aware of some apps out there like remastersys, reconstructor, uck etc... but I read that some of them don't keep your theme, while others change the login screen or wallpaper. I want my live cd and installation to look exactly like the installation I have in my system.

I'd like to include some sort of installer, I've found gui remaster utilities, but none for the shell only. I need to setup the image to automatically login, so the user could just pop in the cd and start it up without a monitor or keyboard.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to make a live CD off an installation with minimalist deviation possible. Purpose is to check the hardware compatibility using the live CD, after which I'll copy the installation to the hard drive (which will probably be a squashed image) and do the necessary edits to make the system bootable. Since the rootfs will be copied over (not dd, but direct cp --preserve=all), the difference from the actual install should be minimal.
If there are any caveats using this procedure, do notify.
I've been succeeded in doing this using Gentoo but it appears the Gentoo kernel uses Gentoo specific kernel parameters which makes things very simple, but I gotta do this with the generic Debian kernel.
If it can be done easily using a script I would also like to know exactly how it's done so I can reproduce it by hand even to make an ro rootfs and possibly reproducing the same with other distros.
As a suggested fix to solve a problem with cairo-dock, on 5/2/10 at 11:00pm, I ran the following in a 9.10 terminal window:Code:sudo apt-get dist-upgradeThis somehow deleted all of my kernel images, and a bunch of other files.I'm running the livecd now. Is there any way to run dpkg from the livecd on my mounted HDD? I can't access anything while booting up the HDD except for memtest in the grub, so going into recovery mode is impossible.

how to add packages to an existing Ubuntu ISO or LiveCD (Think like slipstreaming Windows Service Packs into Windows installation CDs, if that helps). I want to add things such as more games or the restricted extras plugins so that I don't have to go get them every time I install the OS on someone's computer, things like that. Not as important, but if it would be possible to remove packages
PS I'm not necessarily looking for a specific version, but I'm currently running 9.10 on one machine and 10.04 (soon to be 10.10) on another. A guide for any Ubuntu distro would be fine though. I'm just as interested in learning the theory of it as I am the actual execution.
Mintppc has a nice little backup tool for making a backup record of all the packages you have added since the initial linux install. Does Ubuntu or anyone else have such a backup utility? It would be nice to have it all the packages documented somewhere in case I ever have to reinstall and figure out what packages I installed.

What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?

Now, as of now, I want to carry out the compilation using 32 bit libraries, however, I really don't want to install 64bit version of all prerequisites each time I switch the compilation from 32 bit to 64. Is there any way to have both architectures at the same time?
I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
I recently upgraded from F13 to F14 using "preupgrade". This is the first time I've used preupgrade. So far, F14 is running OK. There are some leftovers from F13 and I'm wondering if this is correct.
Q1: There are 176 F13 packages remaining. [alfrugal@localhost Documents]$ rpm -qa | grep fc13 | wc -l 176 Is this OK? FWIW, after the upgrade, I ran "package-cleanup --orphans" as recommended by the "preupgrade" page on the Fedora Project wiki.
Q2: Also, my GRUB menu was correctly updated for F14, but it still contains the three entries it had for F13. Is it normal for the preupgrade process to require the user to clean up the obsolete entries from the GRUB menu?
im using fedora 14 and i have a slow internet connection. i want 2 install some packages from the fedora 14 dvd instead of downloading from internet using add/remove packages. i tried to edit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo but it dint work.

I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

I have a Ubuntu, Kubuntu 9.10 live CD which I know work because I have installed on my other computer, (HP Pavillion ze2000), and also linux mint 8 and openSUSE 11.2, which also run/work. However when I put them in my current computer and restart, the computer simply ignores them and carries on with vista. I have been testing out the live CD's on VirtualBox and on my second computer and they look pretty nifty But the computer just ignores them as if they weren't there.

I've put in the proper WPA passkey, although it calles it password, ame thing i hope, and added the ip address along with everything else and still cannot connect. Btw, this is on an Acer Aspire 5610 laptop.
