I have all the gstreamers installed,including the ugly ones. I also have the Ubuntu restricted extras and keep getting, "cannot overwrite source files". What am I doing wrong?

I've had no trouble with it until attempting to add new music to my banshee music library and ipod. I've copied the music into my music folder and tried to convert to MP3 with sound converter but it keeps popping up with the warning "Cannot overwrite source files". I tried to convert the files to MP3 directly from the cd but that didn't work either.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.04 and just installed Sound Converter. I am trying to convert a bunch of .ogg files to mp3 to play on my iPod and it's not working so well. In the Sound Converter options I have is set to convert to high quality mp3. I choose the folder that the files are in and after a moment (slow laptop) Sound Converter populates, I hit 'convert' and it shows that the conversion completes in two seconds. All that it did was create the new folder structure of artist/album but there is nothing in there. Not sure what I am missing. I used Sound Converter before and it worked fine.

I want to convert some wav files to wma files. I have the wav files currently in a folder called Test to make it easy. So I have entered the following command line:

error: the following is not a file or directory: home/ajpearson/Desktop/Test
It does not matter what directory I use I get the same error. I am sure the answer is obvious - but not t me.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Jessie. 64 bits. I have been using Sound Converter in other distros (LMDE, Ubuntu, etc) in the past.Jessie has Sound Converter 2.1.3. I think I have installed the needed codecs. When I try to convert from mp4 to mp3, the program gets stuck, and nothing happens. Other formats can be converted.
When I use SoundKonverter (also in Jessie, version 2.1.1) it works with no problem, converting from mp4 to mp3. Nevertheless I would prefer to use Sound Converter.
Trying to convert a midi file I created in Rosegarden into a wav file using Sound Converter. Snd Cnvrtr wants to load some gstreamer "bad" plugins, but they end up conflicting with "good" plugins and "ugly' plugins that had been loaded in the kernel (I think). Thought I might remove gstreamer and load up the "bad" plugins, but that meant removing a huge chunk of programming including Snd Cnvrtr. Anyone got any idea how I might do the conversion apart from Snd Cnvrtr? Either that or how I might get hold of the appropriate plugins to allow the midi to wav conversion to take place?

I would really be upset if there were no way to get these back. I've tried to read a couple of sites but I don't understand any of it. Some people said to get Audacity but that program doesn't even open WMA...not even to import.

1. open soundconverter
2. open file (wav)
3. set to convert to mp3 (default)
4. Click convert and instantly get the ever so helpful "general stream error" message!

I followed it all the way to where it asks me to install ConvertIt by adding the repos and then running Synaptic. I found convertit and marked for install and clicked apply and got this error:

Is there a method at the command line to copy files from one location to another and retain the source files group and user?I'm migrating some MySQL files from one machine to another.I want to back-up the original files in the directory presently. They have owner:group of mysql, some have owner:group root:mysql and so on. To copy them under cli or Nautilus everything changes to root for I execute sudo cp or gksudo nautilus and copy via gui.
Since it is MySQL data I could simply do a dump of the database and restore it on the other machine. But there's about 20 db's and I want to do this via a copy for it will be faster - at least that is what I think.
Before installing Fedora on my laptop I backed up my files onto a USB key. I wiped the hard disk and installed Fedora 12. I copied my files back to my home directory - but all the text files are now binary! View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using FC15.I need a kernel with a different configuration - with the "Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop)" option in the Processor Type and features menu. I need this to support my firewire audio device. I would like to build a new kernel RPM from the SRPM so that i can keep a clean system with RPMs for all files, and I don't really want to manually override the kernel bypassing RPM.I am following **exactly** the process described there - I install the SRPM, unpack the source, then use the starting sample config files in the BUILD folder to create a new customised .config file with the new option, then copy this back to the SOURCE folder.
This works perfectly if I make a standard kernel. But I cannot get the process to work if I change the config file. Every time I compile I end up with exactly the standard kernel -- a vanilla i686 kernel, without my custom config.I believe the problem is that when I run rpmbuild to compile the kernel, this process overwrites my config option. I found that there is a script (merge.pl) which creates new config files dyanmically for all kernel options based on fragments in the SOURCE folder. It looks like the script never uses the config file that I am putting into the SOURCE folder.The wiki page suggests using this command to copy my custom config file cp .config ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES/config-`uname -m`

Now I stumbled upon a huge problem. When I want startup and login into my gnome installation the first application I open gets to play sound and others after that just don't work. I looked endlessly on google but in my understanding the problem is within the ALSA driver.
Some specs :
OS version : Debian 7 (Wheezy)
Laptop brand : Packerd Bell Easynote LJ-65
Kernel installed : 2.6.38-2-686 (Standard one in wheezy)
I have been trying to get sound to work through the open source HDMI drivers, does anyone know how to do this?
I get a perfect picture through HDMI but no sound. The ATI HDMI option is not muted and is enabled. I dont know what else to do. I opened a terminal and did "aplay -l" and I can see the device in there. I DO get sound using the proprietary drivers supplied by ATI, but I get screen tearing and makes the picture look horrible.. So for now its Sound vs Picture quality... Why cant I have both :/
Installed Fedora 11 successfully, but I cannot get the MP3 files to produce sound.
Have tried the default configuration for sound, the Pulseaudio and the PulseAudioSoundServer.Installed and use KDE interface. Sound works for SKYPE (after selecting HDAIntel) and the Firefox 3.5 Beta 4.
