Software :: Xmms - Volume Starts Very Loud?

Jan 7, 2010

I am using xmms to play mp3 files from machine. Whenever I play a file, the first second or two of the file start very loud and then goes down to a steady volume. I am using alsamixer as the volume controller with software volume control (although switching to wave doesn't make any difference).

My sound card is Soundblaster Audigy 4. I had the same card on my old system and I can't remember it doing it on that so I am assuming it's a software issue... Audacious works fine but I prefer xmms as the equalizer refuses to "stick" to the main window in audacious!!

Fedora Hardware :: Volume Too Loud In F15 On Bootup

May 27, 2011

I have a problem where the volume in F15 is way too loud. The computer is a Dell Optiplex Gx280 using what is labeled as an Intel ICH6 for the audio card. I have the system volume at about 10% and have to still keep banshee's volume at 5% or lower otherwise it's just too loud. The system saves the volume level between reboots, however I've run alsamixer and noticed that the headphone jack is at max volume.

So, I ran:
Code:
sudo alsamixer -c0
lowered the headphone jack volume by half, then ran
Code:
sudo alsactl store 0
to save that setting. Upon rebooting, the headphone jack is back to 100%, though.

If I run
Code:
sudo alsactl restore 0
then it will restore the settings I saved but it obviously isn't doing this during bootup. How would I run this command at boot?

Software :: Very Loud Volume In OpenSuSE 11.1 - Can't Turn It Down

Jan 13, 2009

I have recently performed a clean install and replaced OpenSuSE 11.0 with 11.1. Most things seem to be working fine, but the sound is extremely loud. None of the volume controls in the mixer seem to have any effect on it at all, but if I mute the PCM channel it mutes the speakers. None of the other mute buttons effect anything, and not even the PCM channel volume has any effect.

The only volume control that seems to work at all is inside whatever program is playing the sound, such as kaffeine or amarok, but even then I have to have it set to around 5% to prevent blowing my eardrums.

The soundcard is a VIA 8237 integrated sound card for a Biostar iDEQ small form factor, and it worked fine in OpenSuSE 11.0 and 10.3.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Is Vary Loud Until Volume Slider Is Touched

Sep 20, 2010

Basically every time I boot into Ubuntu any sound will be vary loud until I move the volume slider, it doesn't matter how much I move the slider as long as it moves then all sound will play at the normal volume and volume control works like it's suppose too until I reboot. This problem started in 9.10 and still happens in 10.04 and 10.10(as of a couple days ago).As far as I can tell the issue only exists in Ubuntu, doesn't happen in Fedora(Gnome), OpenSuSE(KDE) or Kubuntu.Running 10.04.1 32-bit, Logitech Clear Chat USB Headset, don't have any speakers.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sounds Always Starts At Maximum Volume - Set It To Initialize To Specific Level?

Jan 8, 2011

I have an Echo Mia soundcard that I had working in Ubuntu 9.04 fine but just upgraded today to 10.04. I got the card working fine with the Medibuntu respository Alsa Firmware. However, every time I boot up the volume is insanely loud (I use studio monitors with a set volume). As soon as I click to change the volume it suddenly kicks in down to the correctly set volume but I need it to not boot at max. I remember I had to do something in 9.04 to resolve this and had the Echo Mixer in the panel as a launcher but I can't remember what I did to get it to initialize the volume correctly. I've tried everything I could think of to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas? Even if I could just use a script to set the volume to initialize to a specific level I'd be fine with raising it after.

Fedora :: MP3 Support For K3b & Xmms ?

Dec 30, 2009

I know this can be a touchy subject but I would like to find MP3 support for K3b & Xmms, I am a big fan of the Banshee music player and have used it with MP3 support provided by FLUENDO [url] in many Linux distro's. I can play mp3s in Banshee thanks to FLUENDO, however when I open k3d or Xmms I am presented with an opening message that an mp3 plug-in for those apps cannot be found. Can anyone suggest any packages that will enable mp3 support in these applications?

Fedora :: XMMS Playlist Advance Fail

Jul 24, 2011

I've recently upgraded to Fedora 15 after a failed Fedora 11-12 upgrade (luckily all my data is on a seperate drive!) and have been re-installing all the applications i had before. One strange problem i've come across is with XMMS. When it gets to the end of a song it wont move onto the next one. I've tried checking and unchecking the 'No Playlist Advance' option and it has made no difference. I tried changing the output from ALSA to OSS but that didn't even play the tracks so i switched back.

This is an older machine using an Intel Celeron processor. Not sure of the speed, but I could look at the bios if that is needed.

Ubuntu :: HD 3870 X2 Getting To Hot / Loud On 11.04 But Not On Windows

Aug 18, 2011

the HD 3870 X2 is getting very hot and loud on My fresh Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) Installation. But on Windows 7(64bit) it's running just fine

AFAIK there are 4 profiles saved in 3870's BIOS

the BOOT Profile = Maximum performance and energy consumption (that i can hear at boot it is extreamly loud)
the 2D Profile = Medium Performance - lower energy consumption and quiet
the 3D Profile = Medium to Maximum Performance (on demand) Crysis2 = very Loud
the idle Profile = Low Performance and Low energy consumption (Windows Explorer/ Photoshop)

the problem is IMHO that the card doesn't switch to the default profile after the GUI booted.so i disabled compiz/ desktop effects and stuff the card kinda thinks i'm not in IDLE catalyst is installed via Ubuntu's driver install program 3d acceleration works but i got a "AMD Unsupported product" Watermark in the right corner of my desktop, pretty anoying tho...

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Compiling GTK+ 1.2 On Suse 11.3 X64 In Order To Install Xmms 1?

Jul 17, 2010

I Currently have the problem of not being able to install xmms on suse 11.3, apparently since there's no way to install it from the packman repos because xmms claims it's missing glib 1.22 -oh yeah that one. But since it worked like a charm on 11.2 i'm just wondering if the glib, gtk, and gdk rpms will be present in the future or have i just missed something. I've tried to compile gtk 1.2 and above on 11.3 but since it is a 64bit system it do not comply with my request.Output from glib-1.2.2 and 1.2.10

Code:
checking host system type... Invalid configuration `x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu': machine `x86_64-unknown' not recognized
checking build system type... Invalid configuration `x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu': machine `x86_64-unknown' not recognized
and what's missing for xmms

[Code]...

If anyone could give me a tip on how to compile the old 32bit gtk libs on a brand new 64bit system would be much appreciated. Or if there is an even simpler way please tell i.e if there is any repos hosting what i need. Greets
