Software :: Syncronization Of Some Files/folders From A Lot Of Servers To One Central Server?

Sep 1, 2010

I'm looking for a Syncronizacion Softwares (running as a daemon) to do a unidirectional syncronization of some files/folders from a lot of servers to one central server.As there are a lot of servers i want a software that only needs to be installed on the central server and pulls the files/folders from the other servers.rsync and unison need to be installed on both machines and syncronize the files/folder by sending them from al the servers to the central server(its no the central server the one who pulls the files/folder from the other servers), so they dont work for what i want.

Ubuntu :: Move All The Files In All The Folders To One Central Folder?

Nov 20, 2010

I dual boot a computer from separate hard drives in Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04. Here is the deal: On my windows drive I have a folder that is filled with folders inside folders packed full of files in all the folders. There is a 100% possibility that I have multiple copies of any file in multiple locations. Is there any nice command or program to move all the files in all the folders to one central folder and in any way get rid of the multiple copies? Also, how do I compare to files that may or may not have the same name, but otherwise be identical to see if they are identical?

Ubuntu Servers :: Vsftpd - Can't Access Files/folders?

Sep 26, 2010

1- I've set up 3 virtual users,one of them is a system one (with a different password) and writes on his own home folder. With this one I haven't found any problems yet, but with the other 2 users I can't access files/folders created by them. It's a permissions problem for sure, but I'm not sure how to correct it.With these users I can upload files, create files and create folders. The problem is I can't access what I create (I can't enter a folder I created but it is there and I can upload files into it).

2- Whenever I turn on ssl_enable=YES I can't access the server (even from the server itself when I connect to localhost, It's a regular Ubuntu installation).Here's the config file for the users:

Code:
write_enable=YES
anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES
anon_other_write_enable=YES[code].....

Ubuntu Servers :: Set Permission For Future Public Files / Folders?

Jan 2, 2010

I just set up an VPS with ubuntu. I made a user1 and gave it ownership

Code:
chown -R user1 /home/www

This user also have been given all the root privileges (I know it is not recommended!)

The problem is that each time I make new site, and user1 wants to upload (through ftp) files to /home/www/newsite I need to redo the the above command in order to be enable user1 to upload. Not only this, I need to rework permissions (744 for folders and 644 for files), otherwise the newsite throws permission errors message.

Ubuntu Servers :: Way To Control Access - Some Files/folders Would Even Need To Put In A Password

Apr 11, 2010

I've managed to setup Ubuntu Server 9.10, and created folders/files toview/edit/execute with Windows and Mac.

Now here is my dilemma, this is for a home server, and I will have 4 users(1 for myself, one with "admin" rights, my fiance(mac user), media pc, and a "guest" account for the computer or 2 that are out in the public(they don't need access to my taxes ).

I'd like to have it so that on my laptop, I can access the whole server, but some files/folders would even need me to put in a password. I want to do this because my fiance gets delete happy and deletes things, so if she goes on my computer she won't delete important info. I'd like her to have access to music, photos, and videos, as well as her having her own folder that she can treat as her hard drive.

The question is, do I need to setup a domain for this, or can I get away with a workgroup?

Ubuntu Servers :: Does Unzip/untar Always Append Files To Existing Folders

Mar 4, 2011

Will unzipping always append files if the directories already exist? What about tar?

I unzipped an archive the archive had 3 folders and dozens of subfolders within those. app, skin, js

The folder I unzipped it to also already had those 3 folders as well as many child folders etc.

My website is still working so I'm just wondering. Is this safe or is there anything I should worry about. The other option was to manually upload each file manually that is in those 3 folders and the dozens of sub folders.

Ubuntu Servers :: Replacing Home Network - Central User Management Setup?

Jul 22, 2010

I am replacing a home network - Windows Server 2003 and 5 PCs (XP Pro) with UBUNTU 10.4 LTS Server and client versions. I am keeping a couple of the PCs with dual boot until I can migrate everything over (Having some issues with iTunes, Family Tree Maker, Media serving, DVD decrypt and a couple of others, but that is for another post). It was great fun getting the server up and running using only shell commands. Took me ages just to get a folder shared! Migrating the data over from NTFS to ext3 was also fun given the limited space on the partitions.

I really only want to use the server for communal network type things ... central user account maintenance, shared folders for music, video etc and data backup. I don't need it to be performing server functions on the Internet e.g. web server etc although that may come later. How I set up central user management? All the PCs are currently setup with local user ids, and it is a bit of a pain to go round each PC every time I change something.

The server is not always up, so I need to be able to log into the local PC without it being active. I was using Active Directory on Server 2003, but I don't need anything that complex really ... just 3 or 4 users to manage. I have been looking at the setup tutorial at [URL] but am not sure how relevant a lot of it is. I have SSH setup so I can login remotely, NFS is working to share the folders, but that is about all I have done so far.

Server :: Permissions On New Files / Folders?

Apr 26, 2010

I have a Samba share set up on a SUSE server that about 30 Windows XP clients are connecting to on a daily basis. They connect using Winbind and their Active Directory usernames and passwords which are stored on a Windows small business server (Server 2003). The share is called "company" and it's right off the root of the partition. Within "company" there are about 75-100 folders, most of which need to be publicly available and publicly writeable. There are a few that need to be locked down to a certain group of people so I've used group membership and access control lists for those.

The permissions on new files/folders still aren't right though, so I'll just try to explain what I WANT rather than trying to resolve what is HAPPENING since I think that'll be easier. Currently the entire company directory and all subdirectories and files are user-owned by "administrator" (an active directory domain admin). I'd like new folders and files created anywhere in that directory or any subdirectory to maintain that ownership by administrator, regardless of who creates them.

Likewise, the entire directory and all subdirectories/files are group-owned by "domain users" (a builtin active directory group which is pulled in via winbind) which gives everyone write access to everything. I'd like that ownership to be maintained as well on any new files or folders created in /company or any subdirectory therein. I think this is working for the most part as I've set the setgid bit on company. I'd like any files or folders created in /company or any subdirectory therein to have 770 permissions (rwxrwx---).

So, what I want is regardless of who creates a file or folder anywhere in "company" - it should be owned by user "administrator" and group "domain users" and have 770 permissions. I'd like to make a little tweak to this post. Above I said I wanted anything created under Company to be created with group owner "domain users" - that actually only goes for anything that will be public. On the folders I have locked down via group membership and ACLs the new files/folders created within should maintain ownership of whatever group owns that directory. I should be able to do this by setting rwxrws--- permissions on secured directories.

At present the folders under the "shared" folder are having all permissions i.e. 777. To restrict certain things, I want that users may read and modify the files but may not be in a position to move or delete the files. How to set the permissions on the folders/files in this scenario?

Ubuntu Servers :: Modern Central User Management - Automount A Secure NFS Share Somewhere In The /home Directory

Mar 14, 2010

I've setup Kerberos and OpenLDAP servers (9.10) similar to the official documentation (and other sites that fill in the "gaps"). However, when you start to get in to some of the details, there seem to be many options - and I guess I'm looking for what could be the defacto standard. I'd like to allow Ubuntu clients to have a sso capability, with the ability for local caching of passwords if not connected to the network (such as a laptop user away from the office, prior to a VPN). I'd like to automount a secure NFS share somewhere in the /home directory. If the user logs in to a computer they've not logged in to before (if they're authorized), it would be nice if a skeleton /home directory could be setup there automatically I'm guessing that it is not desirable to use a shared /home NFS - as if you're off the network this would be problematic - as well as multiple computers sharing the same /home. There are some benefits to a shared /home (SSH certs, etc.), so maybe there is a hybrid approach out there.

I've read that it's not necessarily good practice to have OpenLDAP to do the authentication (leave this to Kerberos), but it's fine for authorization (such as ACLs for logins to certain computers). It's also good practice to use TLS with OpenLDAP (which requires public certs on all the clients) and to not allow anonymous read to the directory. I would guess that a computer host keytab could be refreshed to bind to the OpenLDAP server via GSSAPI / SASL to allow a non-anonymous read, and then determine if, say, the user was a member of a group allowed to log in. Kerberos would then pick up and authenticate the user and then proceed to the login. Off the network here, I'm not sure. I found this document, but it's self declared missing items: [URL]

I'll stop the rambling, but I cannot be the only one who would like to setup a relatively standard and secure server based network authentication and authorization back-end. Is there any _complete_ documentation on the best practices and how to implement?

Server :: Looking For Gateway With Central Control System

Jun 4, 2010

Basically I'm working as part time administrator in a company, and still am at college. To keep the story short, the company I work with used to have a linux gateway, namely Untangle. We tried to upgrade to E-Box, which is supposed to have more options than Untangle, but it doesn't seem to work as it should. What I'm trying to ask here is this. I need a gateway system that handles QoS, Content filtering, Mail Filtering, DNS, Wan failover / load balancing, LOGS (important), Firewall and maybe the handling of separate users or groups. The ideal solution would be one that like the E-box, has a central control system, without the need to adjust code in CLI for configuration. I have some experience on CentOS and Fedora, so I am able to do some configuration, like installing Samba, DHCP and VNC.

Server :: Vsftpd With Central Authentication, But Without Home Directory?

May 11, 2010

I am trying to build a ftp server with vsftpd. In general, I am not able to log in. I can only log in to the ftp server, if that same user is logged in to the server. I found out that this has to with my network setup. I am using OpenLDAP for centralized authentication and home directories are stored on an NFS server. The problem is that regular users are not allowed to log in to servers, therefore their home directories are not mounted. However I want to be able to give my users access to the ftp server without their home directories mounted. Is this possible with vsftpd and if so how do get this up and running. By the way, anonymous users are not allowed.

Software :: Connecting To Central Mysql Database Server

Sep 17, 2009

We are hoping to build a central database server so that we can take all the singular instances of mysql off our web servers and have the data stored in one place (we also run a number of syslogging servers that use mysql, netflow servers that use mysql, and many other servers that have mysql tables that we would like to consolidate as well). Now I have run into the problem that requires all the customer web sites to change the configuration for their connection to the mysql server from a local connection to a remote connection, which is something we are trying to avoid. I am wondering if there is a software suite or a function of mysql itself that allows you to present the remote database information as local databases to a server, allowing customer configurations to remain intact, as if the mysql server never moved off the local machine? Or a different question, can you configure mysql server to take local requests and forward them to a central mysql server?
