Software :: Sound Effects - For My Home-grown Video
Jul 6, 2010
We have all sorts of tools to capture and edit video, or to create animations that we save as video.
We have all sorts of tools to record and edit audio for us to use with our various video.
Can anyone direct me to open source "sound effects" -- foot steps, door open, door close, passing car, train station, and so on.
Are there sources for all of the traditional "foley artist" sounds in the open source world?
I found this link [url] as a place to start but I'm hoping that there are sources similar to those for clip art and business letters and similar.

I've noticed my ldap.log file has grown to 30GB and has filled / to 86%..
1. I want to know if I zero out the logfile will this cause any issues while ldap is up and running?
# > ldap.log
2. I will be changing the log file settings in slapd.conf. I will then need to restart slapd.. Will restarting impact existing connections at all?

since some time I notice a real disturbing video effect: I use Firefox 4 and Adobe Flash 10 (current version). When opening a web page which contains a flash video this video keeps part of the screen on both (!) desktops. (see attached pictures) Closing or minimizing all programs the video window is invisible. The video window will appear each time a program - any program! - window does appear above the area where this video windows is placed. I open Kate or OpenOffice or any other program and video window will appear again - see pic #1.
No matter if the video was started or not, the effect does happen everytime. No matter if the FF tab or the entire browser was closed or not, the effect will stay until X-Server restart. Even if I switch to the second desktop, the effect will appear. For example I launched Virtualbox on the 2nd desktop, open a Win XP system - the entire desktop background is blue. I opened Chrome and the video window from desktop #1 appears within the Chrome window. (see pic 2) The effect will not appear into screendumps, so I used my smartphone cam for both pictures:
#1: after opening www.tagesschau.de I closed firefox and re-opened FF with another web page. You can see the video screen from tagessschau.de within the heise.de page.
#2: then I switched to desktop #2, run WinXP into a Virtualbox window and launched Chrome.
Nvidia Gforce 9800 GTX+
current Nvidia driver from nvidia.com
Kubuntu 10.10 amd64 and KDE4
all updates installed
As I do remember this effect happens since Flash 10. Unfortunately it is nearly unimpossible to use Internet without an installed Adobe Flash 10. If it would be possible I would remove Flash immidiately from any computer.

I have played around a bit with the Open Shot Video Editor and just download Kdenlive. I am trying to teach myself how to create and edit videos by inserting music, transitions, etc. However, I want to add special effects such as fireworks, explosions, get text to light up, blur, etc, and add sparkle type effects. I know Open Shot won't do this and it does not look likve Kdenlive will either. Trying to find something that will jazz my videos and almost give them a semi professional quality to them. Is there any other Open Source video editor type program that can do special effects like what I am looking for?

I just installed linux Mint 9, although I was having the same exact problem with ubuntu 10.04. Just testing mint out for a bit. I am running on the 64 bit OS. When I got to select advanced visual effects, It goes to enable the drivers but then I get this message.
"SystemError: Failed to fetch [url] Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]"
It used to work before but then just stopped one day when I booted up. I use Docky, and it won't work without the drivers because it requires compositing to work properly. I am using a Nvidia GTX 260 video card if that has anything to do with it.

Avidemux
Pitivi
LiVES
now Pitivi comes standard with the newest install of ubuntu, but it sucks, sorry, its has nothing, or im missing something, and for LiVES I just cant seem to get it to do what I want, its very confusing, I just want something with a simple UI like WMM or something along those lines, it doenst have to be linux based, but if your going to give me something that doenst work fresh install,

When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?

I have a Geforce 9300 GS installed in my machine I am using 64 bit Gnome with a 64 bit system I downloaded this: Now my video won't show any effects and the Nvidia card won't work? This doesn't make any sense. Frustration to the max. I should have stayed with Fedora 10 at least it worked with downloadable drivers.

I decided to try Ubuntu 10.10 after I had enough audio driver errors on my Acer netbook ( it came with windows wtf why errors) to drive me crazy. Anyway since I installed Ubuntu its ran better then when it was new my question arises here tho. I need to do some basic video editing (combine a few avi files, add transitions, add effects, etc) I don't need some end all to do all editor. just something basic like the windows. Video editor thingy was. So far I've tried pitivi which crashes, open soft which also seems to dislike me, and kdenlive which shows some promise but seems to be slow and needs libmp3lame.
I tried to install it and while my software manager thing says its installed kden says its not. I wanted to try lives editor but my terminal abilities are almost non-existent. Is there an editor I haven't tried that could be what I'm looking for? Is there a way to fix kden? I just want to edit the video and put it on Facebook. I'm willing to learn and I'm not a computer idiot just a Linux one. I really don't want go back to windows cause ill have to reinstall it and even when I do that with the disc Acer sent me windows makes a screeching noise even when then sound is off and locks up.

I was listening to some Chopin today and I thought how cool it would be if there would be a way to put the sound output of Amarok (or anything else, maybe line-in or microphone) through some effects that would make it sound like being read from a vintage vinyl disk. Or when listening atmospheric folk songs about forests, it would be really cool to add some echo or reverberation, so it would sound like a large forest, ooor... But you get the idea. Is there any nice way of putting Amarok's sound through JACK, and from then on through a sound effector?

I am using a Dell Latitude E6510 with QM57/QS57 Intel GMA HD chipset video card, when I am installing the Fedora 14, if I choose the 'Install the new system or update an existing system', it goes to blank screen.if I choose the 'Install system with basic video driver', it starts to install.BUT I cannot use the desktop effects, the Stellarium, etc, it says that 'accelerated 3D graphics is not available'. Even I have updated my kernel to 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686. As far as I know, QM57 do support a 3D graphics, what should I do to drive it to work.

I am fairly new to Ubuntu, so I'm sorry if I don't include any necessary information. Installed 10.10 rc from CD about 3 days prior to official release and everything was working fine... went about installing software and setting up laptop for use. About one week later, got prompted for upgrade and went ahead through update manager. Now can't enable desktop effects. Right after upgrade had a period where title bars of windows would not display... menus were present, but no title bars, no maximize/minimize/close buttons and no dragging windows to new locations on screen That has since resolved itself. Spent quite awhile searching forums, created xorg.conf at one point, later deleted it.

I'm running Karmic Koala 64 bit on my Lenovo T400 laptop with switchable graphics having both Intel and ATI video cards. I've set my bios to use the intel card only and turned the automatic switching off. So far so good, but I'd like to turn on compiz for basic window animations. When I try to start compiz by selecting
Code:
"Appearance Preferences" -> "Visual Effects" -> "Normal"
I get an error message saying "Desktop effects cannot be enabled"
Code:
"System" -> "Administration" -> "Hardware Drivers"
doesn't show any new drivers that could be installed. This was working out of the box when I first installed Karmic Koala a few month ago, but things got messed up when I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI card. Now I can enable compiz if I switch to ATI from my bios settings and install the drivers but I don't want to use it due to high power consumption and I've removed the ATI drivers.
Here is my xorg.conf file:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
[code]....

Just put 11.4, 32 bit on a system with an Intel D865 GLC motherboard and 865G built in graphics controller. While the install went OK it turns out that X is totally hosed. After fighting with things for a while and discovering that Sax2 had disappeared I poked at Google and discovered some other poor folks that have had similar issues with Intel video cards. Based on a suggestion for a doc in OpenSuse.org I edited the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf
and added the line: Driver "intel" to it - after that things got better. Obviously the install process had not identified the video card correctly. I'm now left with another issue - while the system now identifies the driver and can talk to the monitor correctly, a Samsung S23A350H I can't open a window after X comes up and I login - basically the same issue as the unresolved Bug 673873: [Bug 673873] intel [865G] Windows flash rapidly or don't appear if Desktop Effects are on in KDE and GNOME
The workaround is to turn Desktop Effects off but since X doesn't work I can't figure out how to do that. I can't find the gnome-xgl-switch or a xgl-switch that used to exist to do it on the command line so that's out. Someone said you could drop the empty file "disable-compiz" in the ~/.config/compiz directory and that would do it but in 11.4 that directory doesn't exist. how to disable "Desktop Effects"/XGL/compiz or whatever it is now called on the command line in OpenSuse 11.4 without a gui if that is still possible?

I have created a 75g partition on a hard drive that I would like all videos to be accessible to all users of the computer. I understand that I can mount to /home/user/video but I cant find a method to make user the current user that is logged on.I have built up a PC that I want to use as a place to download movies and music. I then want to create a uPNP server to share the media over my LAN. I vaguely understand what I am talking about and I think Vuze is the best program to meet all these needs. Its not a huge issue because there is only a single user that will ever be using this PC but if this is possible it will help me greatly when I migrate my main PC to Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu 10.4 and I am not afraid to play on the command line.

So when I try to move the home directory to another point, the sound stops working magically. Well actually the sound still works, but the controls don't work. Here is what I am trying to do.
My home directory is currently at /home/user I want it in another independent partition so I copy all the contents from /home/user to /dev/sda5 and then I mount /dev/sda5 to /home/user with rw permissions. Everything works perfectly, even my mozilla profile is copied and such, but the sound somehow disappears. When I comment out the line from fstab that mounts the the filesystem at /home/user, naturally things go back to normal because my folder at /home/user that was earlier becomes my home again. Things are working again. I can go back and forth, doesn't help.
Here are the specs, though they are irrelevant as everything including the sound works as long as I don't try to change my home dir. I'm using a Thinkpad T410. The destination filesystem btw is ntfs for my home directory, I know it's not suggested and most of you here will feel like lecturing me on how i shouldn't be using ntfs, but the point is I want to have my "Desktop" "Documents" "Pictures" "Videos" "Downloads" and everything in the same place for both windows and linux. So if moving the home directory to NTFS is strongly unadvisable, let me know how to move each of these folders to a desirable location. Here's what lspci has to say about audio device.

So I'm interested in using Jokosher as an alternative to Garageband, which is what I'm used to using for recording music. After messing around with it a bit I've encountered a couple problems. The first is that Jokosher doesn't seem to remember the audio input device I selected the last time I used it. This may seem like a minor complaint, but I like to use my computer sort of like a tape recorder - that is, I use it to jot down quick musical ideas for later reference. With Garageband my internal mic is automatically selected, so all I have to do is press record. With Jokosher, however, I have to select the input I want to use every time I open the program. This, to me, kinda defeats the purpose of using a computer as a quick note-taking tool. Is there any way to set a default audio device for Jokosher to use, or to somehow make it remember which device I selected the last time?
The second is that I don't know how to install effects for this program. When I press the "effects" button it tells me that I need to install LADSPA-compatible effects myself. I've done a little bit of googling and still I can't figure out how to do this or which effects I should get.

I have a problem with my Video recording without any sound. I have looked into the fixes of the 64bit MMPEG upgrades and gone through what steps I can find to fix the problem, although even after going through the re-compile in konsole, as well as then removing it and trying again using K Package Manager, I still have no Audio with my Video when recording in Cheese.Cheese records the video in ogv format, and I have attempted to convert the ogv file to avi format using VLC. I am able to watch the video in both VLC and Dragon Player... but no sound, just video. I have used Cheese to record video's using Ubuntu 8.10 onwards, but my current Kubuntu 10.04.01 (and when I had 10.04) has no sound in the recordings. I have not changed microphone, and I have checked all my connections. I can hear voice in the speakers through the microphone. I am using on board sound, which I have no other issues with. The error message I get tells me that my MMPEG install lacks the AAC Audio Codec.
