Fedora :: Mount A Harddisk From Rescue CD?
Sep 21, 2009
My hard disk is failing, and I want to rescue the files from it before it is un-bootable. I was planning to do this by booting a live cd, making a .tar file of /, and then burning it to a cd or dvd. The disk is still bootable, but I'm getting warning messages that 73 sectors are bad. I have another hard disk ready to plug in, I just need to rescue the files, and then install Fedora 11 64-bit on the new drive, at which point I will overwrite / with the / from the .tar file.
Basically I was just wondering how to mount a hard disk to recover files from a rescue cd. I tried to make a .tar file of / already, but that failed because the system was active and changing the various system files at the same time that tar was trying to package them.

I have been trying to install windows for 15 days and I was finally able to do it by removing in "disk utility" the sign saying that the fedora partition is bootable... but I did it when the partition was active... It showed me a message error but i thought that it told me it wasn't abvle to do it... and now that windows is installed I cannot any more access the partition either in rescue mode and on a live cd ... what could I do to access the partition either to save all the files or to (it woiuld be the best) reinstall the grub ?

Background for the problem:
A. I have partitioned my WinXP LTop into:
--- WinXP NTFS partition
--- a vfat partition (mounted onto /fat32)
--- Installed F10 on ext3 virtual partition
B. I do not want install grub-loader in the Master Boot Record (that would loose my WinXP boot-loader for ever)
C. I have installed grub boot loader in the First Boot Sector
D. Now I have to boot using Rescue Mode, do:
1. dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/fat32/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
2. mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs
3. cp /fat32/linux.bin /ntfs
4. modify /ntfs/c/boot.ini and introduce the statement 'c:linux.bin="Linux"'
Problem: Im not able to do step D.2 above.
Symptom:
** after booting linux using the Rescue Mode: sh-3.2# chroot /mnt/sysimage sh-3.2# uname -r 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i586 sh-3.2# mount -f ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i586/modules.dep: No such file or directory ntfs-3g-mount: fuse device is missing, try 'modprobe fuse' as root
sh-3.2#
Observations:
* The rescue mode boots into i586 based kernel (I dont know what is the actual difference between i586 and i686 - will really appreciate if anyone can educate me about it). * The installation is only a i686 image and consequently there is *only* '/lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686' dir and *no* other dir. There is no dir as xxxx.fc10.i586.

I'm running ubuntu 10.10 on my Toshiba Satellite L645 laptop. Few hours ago, when my laptop was in screensaver mode, i couldn't login again, it was just blank black screen So i switch to terminal 1 by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1 and login from there. Then i restarted by "sudo shutdown -r now". I did this a few times before and it's no problem. However, this time when the computer boot, I got the errors like :
---many similar errors like the following line---
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init=bootarg
and redirected to <initramfs> prompt
So i googled and tried the liveCD and try to fix the hard drive with fsck. My partition resides on /dev/sda1 and using ext4
[Code]...
That's 3 blocks of information i got by following instructions on the IRC channel. I just forgot to paste the first command and now can't remember what it is

For whatever reason /dev/sda3 (at /tydelik) does not mount itself (like all the other partitions) when the system reboots.
In YaST's expert partitioner it says that:
Quote:
An asterisk (*) after the mount point indicates a file system that is currently not mounted (for example, because it has the noauto option set in /etc/fstab).
Here is the /etc/fstab :
Quote:
I don't see a noauto option. Is it hiding somewhere?
Also, if I say the following then it seems that /dev/sda3 is ext2 and not ext3 (as YaST says).
Quote:
Firstly, how do I specify /dev/sda3 to be mounted by default (because I thought it would unless there is a noauto specified), and secondly, why is YaST not showing the same settings as when I say "mount" ?

how can I clone my installed ubuntu to a new harddisk? with 32bit ubuntu I have used:tar cvpzf -> create a tar file on my external nas system. after that I have done a restore tar xvpfz - worked with 32 bit.
Alternative I have mounted both disks and via another linux partition I have used:
cp -rvbdR /source/* /target
both methodes worked with ubuntu 32 bit. With 64 bit ubuntu I can NOT get it to work. error message after booting the clone: /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthoriy ..
I can see that /source/var/lib/gdm has different rights as /target - will be part of the problem.
This did not happen with the 32 bit ubuntu - but why ?

I'm having some trouble with one of my system harddisks. It sometimes works without problems, but is not mounted on other occasions. Even when it's mounted, it's working extremely slow and programs using files from it may crash. On other occasions, however, there are no problems at all. If it's not automounted, I may be able to mount it manually but it sometimes shows "UUID not found". If has a lot of SMART errors:

Booting to CentOS 5.5 works and I am able to login with all my devices mounted. When I boot from the install DVD and type "linux rescue" I eventually get the message, after attempting to have one of the screens mount my partitions in read/write mode:
"An error occurred trying to mount some or all of your system. Some of it may be mounted under /mnt/sysimage." But nothing appears mounted under /mnt/sysimage. Should I try mounting my CentOS 5.5 partitions manually at this point ?

I need to flash my BIOS to get rid of an error: "Intel uCode loading error". On [URL] I have found a tutorial, that looks to be fine. I can even see in the comments, that somebody have done this with success from Ubuntu 9.04, the very same system, that I use. Nevertheless I cannot make this bootCD with my Ubuntu 9.04, as it doesn't know the loop option to mount the image.
In the tutorial it says: "Requirements for this step is that you have support for the vfat and loop file systems in the kernel. Or you can have those features compiled as modules. In the latter case you can load the modules before the next step, like this:
modprobe vfat
modprobe loop"
loop doesn't seem to be present in my system, and the command modprobe loop returns an error that the module is not available. I tried to follow the tutorial anyway, but with no success. How can I get the module lopp? I also want to use it to make iso images bootsble from the harddisk.

I have an acer aspire L-5100 with Vista and fedora dual boot configuration. Fedora 11 worked fine. After upgrading with preupgrade The system shows a strange behaviour. The startup screen ( with no the little f in the first ) is first blue with the white place in the middle , the filling with the fedora f very slow ( 5 minutes ) and then nothing. No harddisk or network activity no booting. <ctrl><alt><delete> works for rebooting. <altfx> for console not. Hacking <alt f2><esc> very often and fast leads sometimes to a console where then the boot process starts running and the system comes up with gnome.

My linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.

Environment: A 32-bit kernel RHEL5.3 system running on a virtual machine. The root(/) filesystem is on an LV.
Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. After extending the LV, online resizing of the FS was not supported and the root filesystem could not be unmounted while it was in use. On rebooting, I got a kernel panic error. In runlevel 1, I couldn't run chroot, couldn't find the /etc/fstab, root FS could not be mounted, fsck did not run (tried block 31 for second copy of superblock using dd count=1 bs=4k skip=31 seek=1 if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda2), couldn't find any rpm on installation media to install unix-utils rpm. On running commands in runlevel 1,
I got the following output.

I have a Dell Vostro with sda and sdb (the latter was installed by myself). I installed FC14 x86 64 onto sdb with /boot being on /dev/sdb8
I did not want to install grub onto /dev/sda as this is a shared machine. I thought that I would be able to use the BIOS's 'select boot device' to select the sdb disk and boot off that and get into FC that way.
fdisk verifies that /dev/sdb8 is marked as bootable and grub (via find /grub/stage1) confirms that it is installed on hd1,7 (ie /dev/sdb8)
However, no matter which hd is choosen as the boot device, Windows is always booted - I change the boot order to use: DVD, sdb, sda but it still boots Windows. It seems like the BIOS only wants to boot sda no matter what.

I've a problem booting on my fc14 64 bit. I install it yesterday and everything was ok. Then I updated it and I installed wireless drivers kmod-wl equivalent to my kernel version that is 2.6.35.6-45. I've a pavilion dv6 with a broadcom ach. for networking. So the next step was installing kmod-nvidia for my nvidia geforce but after rebooting my never allow me to log in! I can se the tipical blue-white progress bar loading nvidia drivers but not else!
my screen freeze itself after the progress bar became white. I would resolve by rescue mode but I've installed fc14 64 b using a usb-pen drive and I find no way to do this from live version.
