May 2, 2011I have old mandrake installed and boot in text mode. Works fine with CRT monitor, but shows out of range in LCD monitor. Is there any way to fix this?

Sep 30, 2010I decided to install ubuntu on my family desktop because it is quite old now and it needs constant maintenance for windows. I have used the old ubuntu on this computer some time ago i believe it was the 8.04 version. But anyway back to the point, i have decided to put ubuntu back onto the computer but i have encountered an issue. The issue is that when i installed ubuntu everything seemed to be working perfectly out of the box the printer, wireless etc... but when i installed the restricted drivers for the ati card inside.Upon loading ubuntu a big OUT OF RANGE came up on the monitor and i cannot access anything. I looked at the FAQ but am unable to get into recovery mode to type in the relevant command prompt and there seems to be no grub popping up to press esc/shift to get into the menu. Is there anyway around this? i am prepared to reinstall ubuntu but what could i do to prevent this upon re installation?.

Mar 26, 2010i tried using diff --GTYPE-group-format= with <%, but not sure that right solution.Here's what im trying to do. I have two c source files, file1 and file2. file1 has a function in it that's been modified in file2. However, the functions begin at differnt line numbers in eachof the files. Is there a way to specify a range of file numbers on file1 and file2 to compare, using diff or any other combination of utilities? I can always output text from a range of lines from each file to two separate and new files and then compare those, but that's tedious. I could also write up a script to automate this type of solution, but I imagine there's an existing way of doing this.

Apr 24, 2011I want to plot a set of data in only one plot.The problem is that some points of the data should be better plotted in a linear scale (lets say 0 to 100,000) but there are other data points that, exceding the value 100,000, would be better plotted in a logarithmic scale, as they goes in the range 100,000 to 500,000,000. Let's say the data is:

Apr 11, 2011I want to build a bash script, which can ping a range IP adresses which will be filled in by the admin. If there is no IP-adress filled in, then the script must ping the subnet where the system is logged on. So if my ip is 192.168.1.6, then the script must ping from 192.168.1.1 till 192.168.1.255 Or else, if there is given a beginning and ending ip it must ping that!
The first part of the bash script is to ping a given range (see below). But there is one problem, how can I tell the script to ping from $begin till $end, [..] is of course wrong! But what must be filled in there???

The second part is to find my own ip and ping the whole range.. How to do that? I only can find my own IP, but I cant ping the whole range,, how to do that?

Mar 4, 2009It seems I had no say in the matter. The installer automatically did text mode and it starts up in text mode now. I'm very new to Fedora, though I had Ubuntu installed recently but removed it because Fedora seemed a little more interesting to me. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2807nr laptop if that helps.

Aug 27, 2009I tried installing Fedora 11 on my i386 using the 6 CD set that I downloaded. Since my system has only 128M of RAM, the text install mode was used. The 1st CD installation seemed to work OK. After 181 out of 181 packages were installed, the system rebooted and did not ask for me to insert the other CDs. now when my system comes up, it is always in text mode.
Q. Is there a command I can use to have the remaining CD's installed so I can install the graphics system?

Aug 7, 2010I have been using SuSE Linux in text mode for the longest time (since 8.0) and I'm often more comfortable working in that mode. I have just installed 11.3 with GNOME as a fresh install on my dual-boot laptop and I am pretty happy with the way things work. But I still languish for my text mode from time to time.
So: I know about right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Open in Terminal" and that should really solve my needs, but I read here in an older thread about using Ctrl + Alt + F2 (as it happens, it can be F1, F2, F3, etc.) so I decided to try it out. Well, when I do that, I get exactly what I expected --- a black text screen with a login: prompt and I can do all my little texty things just as sweet as can be. Except for one thing: I can't get back! The only way I've been able to get back to a GUI is to use "shutdown -r now" as user: root. Also, Ctrl + Alt + F1 removes the GUI completely for all four terminals. Can someone tell me more about this function where I might read an "info" or "man" about it? I don't even know what it is called, so it is hard to know how to search. OpenSUSE :: Garbage In Yast2 In Text Mode?
Mar 5, 2011if I open Yast2 via SSH I see the garbage (code page related issue; similar to this). If I set some other than UTF-8 in PuTTY (KOI8-U, iso-8859 etc) Yast looks good, but then the same problem appears with Midnight Commander. How can I have Yast to use 'right' UTF-8 instead of any legacy code pages? Or how better deal with the situation?

Jul 5, 2010Most of the time instead of a pretty graphical splash I'm getting a small low res text version of the boot screen squeezed into the top left hand corner of my display on my laptop with Intel GMA4500 graphics.
Originally I was getting a blank screen with the Plymouth splash only appearing a couple of seconds before log-in. Adding FRAMEBUFFER=y to /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash got rid of the blank screen but at the expense of the ugly boot screen mentioned above. To confuse matters, now and again (roughly 1 boot out of 10) I am getting a perfect graphical boot. I've tried reinstalling Plymouth and using different boot themes but to no avail.

This would save disk space, improve learn the OS better and also gives the freedom to mess around without worrying too much. Can anyone tell me how to install a simple version of Ubuntu 8.04 (that's the distro I choose since it requires lesser RAM than the current version) in virtualbox in text only mode? During the installation there doesn't seem to be a choice in installation modes. If not, should we install the OS normally and change the run levels afterwards to boot in text mode?

Mar 16, 2011I recently converted a Toshiba Satellite A75 notebook with a broken screen into a minecraft server that me and my friends will be using at UAB. It's currently running the latest version of Debian in text-mode with a few shell scripts that backup files and update a webpage at specified times.
The server runs fantastic ( though it's currently on my home network so no one can join it unless they are on LAN ) but there is a minor problem. I took a look at the backups from last night and it seems the server shut down around 10:00 in the morning because the laptop went into sleep/hibernate mode or something like that. I'm not sure what's causing this exactly but I think it's some setting in gnome-power-manager, but I can't run it in text mode.
