I am trying to edit the iptables to include some ports/ip for openfire server. The problem is the computer is very locked down with permissions...I logged in as ROOT with ID 0.Now the iptables has ROOT for permission BUT ID 1 which reflects BIN.As root i cant edit or chmod/chown the iptables. Here is what i tried:
1. change password of BIN - successfully changed with no errors BUT still cant su BIN with the new password...
2. tried changing the ID of ROOT to 1 but I dont have permission to use the command....

I know I've got inotify-tools installed; I've got a daemon that runs and it's using inotifywait to move some files around.
This thing is:
12:20:16 /home/barrie $ >> dpkg --get-selections | grep inotify*
12:20:29 /home/barrie $ >> aptitude show inotify-tools
Package: inotify-tools
New: yes
State: not installed
Version: 3.12-1
Priority: optional
Section: misc
Maintainer: Peter Makholm <peter@makholm.net>
Uncompressed Size: 115k
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.6-1), libinotifytools0
Description: command-line programs providing a simple interface to inotify
inotify-tools is a set of command-line programs for Linux providing a simple interface to inotify. These programs can be used to monitor and act upon filesystem events. inotify-tools consists of two utilities:
inotifywait simply blocks for inotify events, making it appropriate for use in shell scripts.
inotifywatch collects filesystem usage statistics and outputs counts of each inotify event.
12:20:40 /home/barrie $ >>
It's not showing up as installed! If not how to get the list of installed packages 'reloaded'. I've googled for hours and reloading the installed packages doesn't look promising!

I have a dedicated server running Centos 5.2. I have a Wordpress MU site that's setup over apache 2, mysql 5, php5, and I use phpmyadmin as well. I'm able to read the database as my website appears perfectly fine, however, I can not write to it. What exactly do I need to install on my Centos sever to allow my site to interface with the database? I've used shared servers and VPS's with no problems but this just won't work. The support team seems clueless and I'm ready to ask them to reinstall my entire OS and everything else again.

I am new to Linux and ave installed Ubuntu on my system along with Windows XP (Dual boot). I would like to find out if there is a way to share a database between these two operating systems.
Currently, I have a Microsoft Access database which I would like to use in either OS. I understand that Access probably won't work in Linux so I am willing to go to a different DB application as long as I can access it from both operating systems. Database is very simple. It allows you to input into an Access Form and then allows you to print a simply one page report based on the data just entered.

am using zabbix open source solution for systems monitoring. I am facing a problem and discussed it on zabbix forum. my post was as "My zabbix server is behaving abnormally, approximately daily from 9 to 12, the server stop accumulating logs. I observed that the server report is RUNNING but it did not accumulate log values and also the machine have no extra load. Its shown in the graph image attached.t the following reply,"database performance?are you monitoring database IO and available database threads? "So any one have any idea that how can I do this as I am using MySQL as backend database on RHEL 3.

I am writing a simple application that will run as user foo (i.e. Ubuntu user foo).However, the application will connect to my database as (database user foobar). IIRC, database users have nothing to do with Linux system users - but I just need to clarify that.So can an app launched to run as user 'foo', connect to a database as user 'foobar'?

I recently moved into a new place and when I hooked up my webserver, I wasn't able to bring up my page, even from localhost. With some digging, it seems that I can't access the database that housed my posts (wordpress installation). I looked for the datadir in MySQL and that directory shows the wordpress directory that should be holding the database and all the files are still there. 1) why the database no longer shows up 2) how to restore the database from the files?

I've setup a CentOS apache web server, and loaded a site onto it. The site previously was functioning under windows xp (before I "stepped in") and wamp. What I did was copy the site in /var/www, reconfigure the httpd.conf (DocumentRoot /var/www/site, etc). Although when I try to open the webpage I get this error: Database Error: Unable to connect to the database:The MySQL adapter "mysql" is not available.

I am installing R (a statistical computing software) on Fedora11.
I noticed the ReadMe file said "They may be signed by Martyn Plummer <plummer@iarc.fr> instead of the Fedora project. To allow for this, you must add the GPG key (ID 97D3544E)to the RPM database."
When I installed the R software, it really warned about the GPG key.
I am a beginner, and I don't know how to add the GPG key. Can anyone tell me which command I should input in the terminal?

This is my first question, I am not a linux expert. I found an interesting thread about this but it is related to RH 9 (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-src-rpm-78937) I'm wondering if this database exists for RH EL5 too and in case if someone can point me to the right path to get it and how to install it. the system where I'd need to apply it is 2.6.18-92.el5 x86_64 GNU/Linux. The system is not connected to Internet.

I'm new both to database and database in Ubuntu. I am working on a project in school which students are told to go to a site (html? ftp?), and read a document. I need to record the names of the students who read a document onto a spreadsheet. I was told to look into MySQL and Ubuntu. How can I proceed with this in Ubuntu?

I currently have a database that I would like to be able to update using a web interface and then display on the website. I would like users to be able to update the database by entering one record at a time with around 10 fields of information (drop down menus and text boxes). I am unfortunately using MS SQL for my DB as of right now.

I've installed PostgreSQL on Arch Linux & also self generated self signed certificates in /etc/ssl/ directory. My PostgreSQL 'data' directory is /var/lib/postgres/data & I've edited my postgresql.conf file to use SSL however I'm having permission / access problems starting my database using SSL. It can't access the certificates and errors out when I try and start the database engine:
Code:
LOG: autovacuum launcher shutting down
LOG: shutting down
LOG: database system is shut down
FATAL: could not load server certificate file "server.crt": No such file or directory
code....
I don't know what I need to chown or chmod in order to get PostgreSQL to access my self signed certificates.

sql statement. I am trying to check if there is such a value in the database.
Code:
string NewMovie = "ww";
string queryText ;
queryText = "Select * from movie_info WHERE movie_title = '"+ NewTitle +"'";
MYSQL *conn;
conn=mysql_init(NULL);
mysql_real_connect(conn,host,username,password,database,0,NULL,0);
[Code]......
return 0; The problem i am facing is how do i check if the value is found. I read up and found that a query will return a value of TRUE if the query is a success and a FAIL if there is an error. How do i call these values and then based the check on it?

My problem is I need a broad method to reset the rpm database on my [almost] up-to-date RHEL 5 WS system.
I do not fiddle around with installing new things on this system or perform strange configurations.
A little over a week ago, I started encountering packages in conflict. I entered a RHEL help desk ticket that has been open for over a week. The person assigned the ticket is trying to clear one error at a time.
Once I remove the package in conflict, I get pending transactions; follow the instructions to clear those; and then get more conflicts. I'd like to reset everything without re-installing.

I am having a few issues related to the RPM command. I think something is wrong with the database. Here is what has happen. I had open office installed, I heard about the fork and decided I would install LibreOffice . I uninstalled open office but left the shared libs. I downloaded the new beta release that is out and used the rpm files to install. In the process of installing the menu links I ran into a few conflicts related to dependencies. So I removed the rest of the open office libraries. Now if I try to launch LibreOffice I get a message saying that it can't find it. If I try and do a reinstall with the RPM files I get a message saying that it is already installed. example below:

My existing MySQL database is running on 11.1. I plan to do a fresh install of 11.3 in order to utilize the trimming feature for SSD drives. How should I install my MySQL database to the new version? Do I perform a backup then restore to the new install? Or can I just save the mysql db files to a cd and somehow attach it to the new install?

I currently backup my database using MySQL Administrator. I wanted to test out restoring the database, so on my test server I deleted the database and restored the .sql file to a new schema with the same name as the old. one. It appears to complete the process just fine. But I noticed that the number of rows for the restored database is slightly less than what was backed up.
Is this normal or should the numbers be exactly the same? It's only a difference of about 28 rows. I seem to be able to view the data just fine in the query tool.
