View 3 RepliesI may have to work in another state for some time, and I'd like to access my home machine desktop remotely, like this: Server - home machine, oS 11.4 64-bit, KDE 4.7, 1920 x 1200 screen (currently set to 24-bit color depth), 1 Mbps upload speed, behind a Dlink DL-524 router I manage.
Client: laptop, oS 11.4 64-bit, KDE 4.6.5, 1280 x 800 screen (also 24-bit color depth), unknown up/down speed - probably huge at work, crappy at apart hotel. I'd like to keep the server resolution, if possible, even if the client's is smaller. I want to be able to star/stop KDE apps in the server, move files between folders, and fix the issues that only happen when my wife is at the keyboard (it's a machine conspiracy, she says ). So I'd need to connect to the server's current session/user (which is myself, i.e., same login/password).
What do you recommend for this? I've read Swerdna's tutorial for 11.2/11.2 (a million seen malcomlewis xrdp 0.6 packages for 11.4 (you rock, malcomlewis!), as well as this thread: RDP into OpenSUSE 11.2, however most seem concerned with rdp between windows and linux boxes. Is there something better/faster/simpler for oS-to-oS RDP or should I use xrdp all the same?
I would like to setup a remote desktop for my Ubuntu computer so I can use my computer on a Windows computer that is on a different network. How can I do this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using an Intel chipset GMA4500 and Ubuntu 10.04 Gnome. The monitor configuration tool does not seem to have an option to make the secondary screen a mirror image of the primary screen. It works fine when I connect my TV using HDMI as a second screen, but I want it to be a mirror of the primary, because some apps like Skype will only go "full screen" on the primary display.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs the title says I'm trying to build myself a local RPM mirror. I have multiple laptops and a desktop that use Fedora 11. So I used 'rsync' to setup and sync my directories. I next went on to create my repo with the 'createrepo' function. I run my server backend as FreeBSD so I moved my data over there and setup my 'lighttpd' service.
Everything went fine until I used 'rsync' and synced up my data. Am I supposed to run 'createrepo' after each sync? If so, does anyone else use the same kinda setup, even if not FreeBSD, but a different os other than linux for their server that they run this from? I've been dealing with this for 2 weeks now and finally gave up researching and testing and thought. Not something I'm good at doing. Check my register date and my first post date.
Edit: FreeBSD doesn't have a port or unofficial port for this. I noticed it seems to be written as a python script so thought I could somehow get it to run on FreeBSD with linux emulation.
I am trying to do a net install. I set up a mirror of lenny using apt-mirror inside a virtual machine on my network using the following guide: [url]
And I changed everything in the guide specifically for Lenny.
I gave the VM bridged networking, and assigned it its own static IP address.
When I attempt do an http install, and point the installer to the address, I get the following error message: choose-mirror[3885]: WARNING **: mirror does not support the specified release (lenny).
I have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt seems whenever i create a folder it creates the folder as untitled folder, but i can't change the folder name it just says "you don't have permission to rename item" but yet i created the folder and it is there. One thing i have noticed is that once i enter a folder it won't even let me move the folder.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu-8.04.1-server installed on virtual machine. It works perfect. Now, I made copy of this virtual machine. I started that copied machine and it works fine, except one thing: network does not work!
I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).
I had run one script in unix machine and want to copy the results to a windows machineBoth the machines are on different networksIn linux machine trying to do the ftp to the windows machine its giving connection refused. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've run into a weird problem. Two of my linux machines (A and B, both running CentOS 5.5) are connected to the same wall ethernet socket via a hub. Bothf them are configured for static IPs. The trouble is that when machine B goes offline or hits a kernel panic, machine 1 goes offline too. What I've noticed is that in this condition the "route" output from machine A does not show any entry for the default gateway either The contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 for machine A are:

This is a thread I've moved over from the install forum and is hopefully more focused. Sorry if I have violated some protocol. Problem I have a new machine build configured to dual-boot Windows 7 and OPENSUSE 11.4. Network performance in Windows is very good but network performance in OPENSUSE is very poor.

I installed OpenSuSE 11.3. The only "extra" package I put in after the install was VirtualBox-ose. The firewall is disabled. I gave the machine a static IP address. I can get to the Internet from the machine. I enabled sshd to start on boot with "chkconfig sshd on" and also verified the service is running on the machine. I can ssh user@localhost from the machine as well.
When I try to connect to SSH from another machine, I get a connection refused. I verify that the firewall is down. I also try to get to VNC -- same problem: Connection refused. I ping the machine for fun. If I try to SSH again, it sometimes gives me a logon? I would check the server logs for the connection refused, but I wouldn't know where to look. I started in /var/log/messages, but nothing seemed to jump out there. I also find it strange because I can RDP to a windows guest running under VirtualBox. The Windows guest uses Bridged Network and DHCP.
I also find it interesting that I sometimes type a "ping google.com" from the 11.3 box and it will just hang - no output. Then I open firefox and get to the internet. All of a sudden, ping starts to give output. Could this be a neetwork card issue? A configuration issue? I don't know where to start.
Recently loaded 11.3 onto a virtual machine, however none of the network settings will allow me to connect to the internet. First time Ive had this happen, other distro's Ive experimented with connected with no problems. I recall seeing a similar topic some time ago (dont remember if it was here or another forum), but at the time, there had been no fix. Anyone know if this has been fixed?

I have set proxy for yum so that the packages that are not available on local mirror can be downloaded from other mirrors. But then i don't know how to set no proxy for my local server. Consequently it is not using my local mirror at all. Tell me how to set no proxy for the local mirror. I want my local mirror because it's damn fast. My proxy settings are like this (they go in /etc/yum.conf):

I recently installed Fedora 13 to learn more about it. I am new to this particular Distro but not completely new to Linux. After I installed Fedora 13 I did yum update and after it was finished I discovered that the i686 PAE kernel installed. I am not opposed to the PAE kernel being there and I read a little bit about it on various websites...
As far as I can tell it only actually addresses more than 3 GB of RAM if the software you are using is made to run on more than 3GB of RAM. BUT my question is this: is there any software at all in the ordinary set of desktop packages that would in any way benefit from having, for example, 8 GB of RAM in a 32-bit system running a PAE Kernel?
For example, running Audacity, Rhythmbox, an Open Office Document and Firefox I have never found that there was any real lag or problem with having only 3 GB of RAM... so what is really being added with the PAE kernel to a desktop system.
I have a VPS by my host running on a linux server, and they have given me SSH access. Is it possible to remote desktop into the server, like you can on Windows, so that I can physcially click on things rather than having to use SSH commands?
Surely this must be running on Fedora or Ubuntu etc. so there is some type of OS. You would probably have to install something on the servers end I suppose but just want to know if its possible and what the options are.
I cannot remote desktop to the Debian machine from anywhere, hether within the same network, or on a different network elsewhere. Also, the personal wiki I set up on it to be viewed via a normal web browser cannot be accessed, either. Both time out when attempting to connect to them. I can still ping the Debian machine when on the same network, though.
This started some time ago when we had a failure occur on our main server.had to powercycle everything in order to restore things back to normal, the Debian machine included. Since that time, this problem started to occur. This is a major thorn in my side in attempting to prepare for our website to move,I've been unable to figure out how to fix it.Originally, I thought it would be something in between the Debian machine and anything else, which would mean something like our firewall box or our hardware switch was the problem. But the tech support people who maintain those for us confirm that there is nothing wrong with them, so now I'm not certain anymore.
I want to access the Linux desktop from a Windows machine. I am able to get a terminal window with the TightVNC Windows client, but I only get a terminal window. Does anyone know how to get the entire desktop?
Also, from other discussions, it seems that I am supposed to be able to get a web session going, but I'm not sure how to do that. Does anyone know how to get a web session going through VNC? Do I need to run something other that vncserver?
I want to add another drive to my desktop machine so that I can use a Windows partition to do some gaming and use HTC Sync. What would be the best way to do this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedTotal Newb here, sorry. I am pseudo-IT at work and have set up a desktop with Debian 5 (accidentally overwrote Windows in the process, but there you go). We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. If I download the Linux driver, what do I do next?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to use a headless (no monitor) and armless (no keyboard/mouse) PC as a Linux box that I can remotely access from my other machines. That is I want to make it look like I'm sitting at the console on the Linux box with a monitor/keyboard/mouse.
I've tried that via the instructions at [URL]
but, the moment I disconnect the monitor and reboot, the remote desktop connection fails as apparently X fails to start for lack of a "screen". Removing the keyboard/mouse does not seem to be a problem.
Is there a workaround?
I guess what I'm looking for is the remote desktop behavior from Windows XP/Vista:
1. Connect -> Get logon screen
2. Disconnect -> Session remains active on remote machine and can be reconnected to
With the default boot set to runlevel 5 you have a login screen that provides a menu to choose which desktop to run (KDE, Gnome, etc).
My machine is set to boot to runlevel 3. How can I switch the desktop from the command line before starting X?
Fedora has a nice little utility called switchdesk, but can't find anything like it for openSUSE 11.2.
i want to install whole machine through desktop environment so i want to install ubuntu-desktop but after i want to remove so how can i do so completely remove it after? i am trying to install ACE URL..How to even configure? When i do basic procedures like mkdir build cd build ../configure is says bad interpreter and after i fix this it says something about config.dab or something like that.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old pc currently running ubuntu server 9.10. It was configured during install to connect to the home wifi router by a PCI ethernet card, which worked all well and good. However, at the moment I cannot connect to the router (I have moved the machine too far from it). I want to connect this machine (desktop) to the server so I can SSH into the box and backup some files. I need help creating a simple wired network connection between the two, as I have no clue as to where to start.
