Software :: Make A Bootable Grub2 CD - Stage2_eltorito Missing
Jun 7, 2011
I need to make a bootable grub2 CD. The instructions refer to /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/stage2_eltorito. It is not supplied. Is it available separately, or do I need to build it myself? If so, how?

Today, I used the Update Manager to do my first post-installation update of Ubuntu 9.10. I have a multi-boot setup (Ubuntu / WinXP), using GRUB2. Before the update, I had 5 options:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
[Code]...
Is it valid that the -14- has remained in the list? Surely I can only boot -20- now? How should I get rid of this version since it is added by update-grub because of the existence of this file: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic,Should I delete the file or just rename it? Or is there a better way?

I'm using Truecrypt to encrypt my Windows 7 OS. I also have unencrypted Ubuntu 10.04 installed on /dev/sda6 on the same hard drive. Since Truecrypt bootloader must be installed in MBR, I have GRUB2 installed on /dev/sda6, so I can use TC bootloader to load GRUB2. When I first install GRUB2 on /dev/sda6, I can use TC bootloader to load Ubuntu. But, if I boot into Windows via TC bootloader, and then later try to boot into Ubuntu, I get the message "no bootable partition found". I have to reinstall GRUB2 onto /dev/sda6, every time after I use windows in order to be able to boot into Ubuntu. It seems that starting Windows somehow overwrites GRUB2. Is there a fix for this?

When I have created the usb it doesn't work properly. This is what happens when I start the comp. with the usb:

I have tried to make the usb in both ubuntu and win7 with the same results. I have created a working usb boot before but with an older version. I have come across this problem sometime ago when I tried to burn kubunt on a cd. Think it was the 10.04 version.

I have a very usefull Floppy Disk, when I boot from it, it boots into a Windows 95 menu, the initial screen has various options including an option to press shift + F5, when this is done it shows the command prompt A:. I have added various utilities to the floppy myself ie- fdisk, format, chkdisk, efdisk, xcopy, an early Norton Ghost, etc, etc. So I can partition a new hard disk, format it, delete partitions, ghost a disk, etc, etc, very handy. But floppies are becoming obsolete. I have tried burning the contents of this floppy to a CD, but I can't boot from this CD. I have tried various bootable CD programs from the net, including Ultimate Boot CD, but none of them work very well. I would like to make a bootable CD that will simply boot any computer with either a --new blank, unpartitioned, unformatted Hard Disk -- a hard disk with Windows, -- a hard disk with a Linux Distro, etc. When booting from this CD, it will boot to a command prompt, enabling me to start any program that I have added to the CD myself, ie fdisk, format, etc, etc.

recently i had a crush on my computer caused by a power surge, had to reinstall the os since i couldnt boot.
the installation went clean and everything is working very well since but i am having a strange issue with grub - its missing ?
when i boot the computer start with default kernel and no grub menu is visual for me to choose from.
i tried to purge and reinstall grub2 grub-common and grub-pc packages, tried various things found on the grub2 faq pages including booting from livecd and reinstalling.
it appears as grub is installed correctly but its not running at boot ? dunno ?
i'm using ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS x64 on intel E2180 with 2gb ram.
i really dont know what else to try or what can be the cause for this ?
ps: here is fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 123.5 GB, 123522416640 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15017 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
