Mar 16, 2010have made VLC my only audio player, and while it does lodge itself in the right-hand corner of the taskbar (and displays the song title) I find it quite irritating to have to right click then scroll up to skip songs etc. I did a random Google search and came across an old program called Music Applet, which is now under development by the Panflute community.After a full night and half of this afternoon downloading various libraries, I finally managed to ./configure, make, and make install. However, now that it seems to be finished (oh, BTW, for some reason I was unable to "install," it wouldn't recognize the command, so I went directly from "make" to "make install," not sure if that's affecting this or not) I can't seem to figure out how to add Panflute to my panel.My ls in panflute-0.6.2 reads:

Jul 19, 2011Long time Slack user, thought I would try to update my old laptop (Toshiba Satellite with AMD K6-2 333 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive) from 10.2 to 13.37 in celebration of the newest version :-)
By update, I mean a complete wipe and reinstall, just to be clear.
So 10.2 runs well, everything looks shiny (XFCE of course) but when I try to install 13.37 I run into trouble. I figured out to boot with huge.s instead of hugesmp.s, but when I try to run 'setup' I get an error that says I have no partitions. mkay, I try fdisk (or cfdisk), but I get literally NO response - no error, no nothing but a return to the command promt. It is exactly as if fdisk does not recognize there is a hard drive there at all.
I boot back into 10.2,check the BIOS, everything looks fine, I have a drive mounted at /dev/hda1, swap at /dev/hda3. Are there some additional parameters I should be booting with? Does it matter that the hard drive is ATA?

General :: Installing A Library Locally In Home Directory But Program Doesn't Recognize It
Aug 18, 2011I am installing a program on a server as a non-root user. Specifically it is tmux 1.5, but this should apply broadly to all locally installed program in my opinion (I mention the program name in case this problem ends up not being my own error).
The program requires me to install some dependent libraries (e.g. libevent and ncurses). So, I installed them both locally since I do not have root access
cd $HOME/library/installation/folder
DIR=$HOME/local
./configure --prefix=$DIR
#... make ... make install

Ok, so this installs the program without problems into $HOME/local/bin, but if I run the executable: $HOME/local/bin/tmux , I get the following error:
tmux: error while loading shared libraries: libevent-2.0.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
It would seem to me that the program cannot find the desired libraries, but the file libevent-2.0.so.5 does indeed exist in $HOME/local/lib as specified in the configure options. I am wondering how I can get the program to recognize the installed library in order to run. I tried putting symbolic links in $HOME/lib, $HOME/bin, and $HOME/local/bin, but none of these worked.

Aug 19, 2010I typed in a text file (Feb.txt) at work using the basic Microsoft Notepad text editor and emailed it home. When I tried to open it from the email using the default gedit I got an error message - Could not open the file /tmp/Feb.txt gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character encoding from the menu and try again.The character encoding is set to 'automatically detected'.
How come it can't detect the encoding? I had to manually set the encoding to Western(ISO 8599-15) to load it. I can't remember this happening in the past, and it was OK loading one I sent earlier (Jan.txt) which presumably had the same encoding, as it was written in the same way.

Sep 9, 2010I have a new external 500gb drive I want to format and put data on. I first formatted it as Fat32 as I'd like to access it with Windows at some point. I ended up having a few files over 4gb, so that didn't work.
I'd like to use UDF as the file format. Does anyone see any issues with formatting a 500GB drive with UDF? I don't see any reason why I would want to WRITE to the drive in Windows, just read...but there is software out there to allow Windows XP to write to a UDF drive if I needed to.

May 17, 2010I'm trying to convert a 3gp (mobile phone video) file to PAL DVD format (which is I believe MPEG2 video and one of a few audio choices, in an MPEG PS container). But while the file plays fine in mplayer and vlc, my efforts to convert it, using either VLC or devede, always seem to result in either the converted video being speed up (noticeably, we're talking twice as fast or so not 5%), or in the audio going mickey-mouse. How can I get the file converted correctly? Bearing in mind it needs to be PAL not NTSC (so a lot of stuff I might find online isn't going to work as-is)
