Oct 29, 2010I just installed the 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.10 and though I like it an all, I'd like to put the 64 bit edition in in order to use all four gigs of RAM I have installed... To my knowledge, 32 bit computers should be able to handle 4GB RAM but I guess my address but is too small.
In any case, I'm developing a Ren'Py game and for both it and GIMP and a few other apps I could really use that extra gig.
Quick cut: I would like to back up the programs I've got installed so I can re-install them on the 64 bit version. Most of the things I've installed I've gotten from the Software Center, but for the things I've had to type into the terminal to install, well I haven't logged them anywhere so I'd have to dig up on Google again.

May 18, 2010am starting to get this figured out. finally got the wifi working on a HP touchsmart tx2 laptop and once i give ubuntu a total system shutdown command this system restarts, is this normal or do i need to fix something?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - Command Line (No Packages To Install)
May 6, 2010Just installed Lucid from CD ROM. I have 2 HDDs. When the install screen came to ask about partitions, it didn't seem to want me to install it onto the same HDD as my XP/Ubuntu 9.10 partitions, so I installed it onto my other HDD. After it finished, I restarted and it appeared on GRUB. It takes me to a command line where it asks me for my desktop login and then my password.
It allows me to type in my login, but the password isn't so easy. It won't let me type it in. It's as if the keyboard stops working apart from the return key. I have no understanding of command line. As soon as I'd entered my password, it went on to tell me that there were no packages to install, and then stayed on command line as if I'd just opened a terminal. How would I get it to take me to my desktop?

Mar 6, 2009Currently i am using mapserver 5.0.3 , AGG 2.5-6 on fedora 9. I need some help with mapserver and AGG support. I am trying to use AGG/PNG outformat in the mapfile as well as i added precisely. When i call the link through browser i recieved the following error:
loadOutputFormat(): General error message. OUTPUTFORMAT clause references driver AGG/PNG, but this driver isn't configured. It is clearly evident that from the error, the driver is not configured. since all the mapserver version 5 suppotrs AGG rendering backend, so i checked whether mapserver supports AGG or not.

I found that my mapserver doesn't support AGG means SUPPORTS = AGG is missing in the above output. But i have already installed AGG in my system. In order to clear this issue i gone through many threads in forums, but i was not satisfied with the answers. Atlast i came to know that, i have to recompile the mapserver with AGG. The following link gives you some idea about compiling mapserver with AGG in linux [URL] But the problem now i am facing is i have installed both the mapserver and AGG through YUM INSTALL command so i dont know how to recompile mapserver with AGG support. I think, there will be no configuration file normally when installing through Yum insatll command.

OpenSUSE Install :: Total Uninstall To Start Again?
Feb 5, 2011For various reasons I want to completely uninstall Suse 11.3, including the stuff in GRUB, and start again,without upsetting my other distro which is also in the GRUB options. This so I can do a fresh clean inatall when I'm ready.I know I could just reformat the relevant partitions, but I guess that doesn't deal with the GRUB issue?

Started 2 weeks ago, random and total freeze of system (video, keyboard, mouse).
Nothing useful in th log, other than it occurs at the same time syslogd restart show up in the log.
I don't even know where to begin, or how to troubleshoot the issue if nothing shows up in the log... could use some help, please.
Problem occurs with or without the nvidia drivers installed. Ubuntu or windows, same thing..connected or not connected to the internet
I've ran every memory test I can find, with no issues reported. HD seems OK. No other symptom that I can find, other than it croaking, usually when I'm in the middle of a broadcast or recording.
Is the only machine I have for now, I need to figure out what's wrong and replace it as quickly as possible, so I can get back to work.

Aug 31, 2011I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.

May 11, 2011I'm currently writing a script that will update the software packages on six ubuntu servers so I don't have to go in and update them manually constantly. Problem is, I'm not sure which command I should use to do this the most effective and safe way. Currently, I use sudo apt-get upgrade -y on my own machine, though I can see how this could be dangerous on production servers. I was in the IRC chat and I was told aptitude safe-upgrade is something I may want to look into. Is there a way I can only update security related stuff instead of everything? What do you guys suggest would be the best way going about this? Another issue I can foresee is certain packages that have an interactive prompt. While apt-get upgrade -y takes care of most of this, MySQL would fail with this as it opens up it's own prompt. Anyway I could make my script skip these types of prompts, so I can go back and update them later manually?

Jun 24, 2011I'm considering making a switch from Ubuntu/Linux Mint to Fedora 15 because I just adore, love, cannot be without Gnome Shell any longer. SELinux - I actually am finding I hate this program as it blocks certain plugins (like Java), some programs I run it blocks functionality, etc. What's the best way to disable it or make it more like Ubuntu where it's pretty much permissive of everything. Common Apps I use - I haven't checked the repos, but at the least I use the following (some I know work, but I can't remember the specific ones I want to know if I need to compile or if it's in the repos)
a - Snes9x
b - PCSX Reloaded
c - KeepNote
d - libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4
e - MP4, MP3, AVI, MPEG, OGG, OGV codecs (I think I've converted any others like WMA and WMV... wait I have a few WMA files, crap)
f - Flash 64-bit - this one I have issues with SELinux wise, (reason for first question)
g - VirtualBox - it runs so much faster under Fedora so I know this one works
h - Sun Java
RPMs - Fedora uses RPMs right? Is there like an DEB Alien to convert DEBs to RPMs? Apache2 - Now maybe I found this as httpd or lightppd or something, but why isn't it listed as Apache2 in the repos? I'm more or less guessing that Fedora is not a "rolling" release, is there a variant or version that is or a repo I can enable? A software center, other than Synaptic; I'm pampered when it comes to Ubuntu Software Center and that, is there anything like that in Fedora that isn't Synaptic? What's the terminal command for installing packages, is it zypper or is that OpenSuSE?

Feb 15, 2011Is there any way to quickly remove multiple related packages from the command line instead of having to enter the name of every single one? I am trying to remove OpenOffice from my server running 10.04. It would work nicely if I could get a list of packages without line breaks, such as the list displayed by aptitude when upgrading. That way I could just paste the package list into the terminal. However, "aptitude search 'openoffice'" dumps a long list on many lines that cannot be used that way.
