Debian :: Lenny Fails After First Boot (Screen Goes Blank)

Jul 20, 2010

I'm trying to make dual boot system with Lenny (64bit) along with WinXP. I'm using one HDD with 2 partitions and installed first XP then Lenny. Everything seems fine till the first boot after fresh install. Lenny starts to boot and after same point the screen goes blank and then is turned off and that's it...nothing happens. Happens so fast that I'm unable to see the exact messages on the screen. Maybe somewhere around staring anarcon?

PC is:
Athlon64 X2 5400+
Asus M2V-MX motherboard
3GB DDR2 800
500GB WD SATA2 HDD
Radeon x800 GTO video

I reinstalled 2 times and it's the same. WinXP is working fine though but I really don't want it to be my OS...
Another "hint" from today: The same happens when I use "Try without installing" of Ubuntu 10.04(i386) Live CD. It starts loading and at some point turns off the monitor.
Tried also with 8.04(64bit): Boots till it reach something like "Settings sensor limits" and then it's stuck. I have consoles though (Ctrl+Alt+F1/2/3...).

General :: Single Application Through OpenVPN Tunnel (Debian Lenny)?

Jan 25, 2010

I'm using Debian Lenny and I want to tunnel rtorrent only through a OpenVPN tunnel. I have a tunnel running, the config file looks like this:

client
dev tun
proto udp
remote openvpn.xxx.com 1194
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun

[Code]...

My idea is that I could run a sockd proxy internally that redirects traffic to the openvpn tunnel. I could use the *nix "proxifier" application "tsocks" to make it possible for rtorrent to connect through that proxy (as rtorrent doesn't support proxies). I have trouble configuring sockd as my IP inside the VPN changes every time I connect. This is a config file someone said would help:[URl].. As my IP changes at each connect I don't know what to put in that config file. I have no control over the host side config file.

Software :: Etch To Lenny Upgrade - Webmin Fails To Recognize Debian 5

I have just upgraded my Debian 4.0 box to Debian 5.0. The upgrade is ok and the version of debian is 5.0.6.

Webmin, despite all my efforts, is still displaying 4.0 and when I force it to 5.0 manually, it states: "Warning - Your system is actually running Debian Linux version 4.0."

Debian :: Openssh-server Auto Configuration Fails When Upgrading Lenny To Squeeze?

Sep 10, 2010

I'm in need of a bit of assistance from you Debian users. I have two servers that I thought were identical installations, both running Debian Lenny. Tonight I started the upgrade to Squeeze on both servers and one of them went smooth. The other one started out good but fails on the postconfiguration of openssh-server. I'm getting the following message:

Code:
Setting up openssh-server (1:5.5p1-4) ...
Auto configuration failed
2524:error:0E079065:configuration file routines:DEF_LOAD_BIO:missing equal sign:conf_def.c:366:line 67
invoke-rc.d: initscript ssh, action "restart" failed.

[Code].....

It looks like there's an error in one of the files in openssh-server that prohibits it from installing correctly. However on the other server it all went well.

General :: Debian Lenny : How To Install Xfce 4.6 Instead Of Lenny's 4.4

Dec 14, 2009

i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.

I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.

i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Debian Configuration :: Adding Compex ReadyLink NIC To Debian Lenny?

Nov 4, 2010

I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).

lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-

1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)

I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-

ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

Debian Installation :: Debian/Lenny On A Clamshell IBook?

May 3, 2010

I'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.
