Software :: Convert A Rpm To A Tar.gz In CentOS 5.3?

Jan 11, 2010

I've tried using rpm2targz and rpm2tar, but neither are installed on CentOS. If those are the only tools (or the best tools) available, how can I install them in CentOS?

CentOS 5 :: P2V Conversion - Convert A Physical Box To A Virtual One

Apr 2, 2009

I've read several write ups on how to convert a physical linux box to a virtual one, but have yet to do it. I've tried a few times just playing around with no success. Generally I use VMware ESX as my host of choice, but am open to citrix's XEN (as citrix presentation server is my day job). I run 3 websites out of the house (on junk left over desktop.. can't believe I've had such good (lucky) uptime). One of the sites was particularly difficult to set up, so I'd rather not ahve to do it over again. It's built on OScommerce (LAMP).. so it's a database server as well come to think of it. So.. what have you tried to convert with/to?

CentOS 5 :: Modifying Repo File To Convert Kernel

Jul 9, 2010

I am trying to convert from using the base centos kernel to centosplus kernel. I have modified the CentoOS-Base.repo file to do this, including ensuring that I have excluded the kernel kernel-devel etc from base and updates. However when I do a yum update there is nothing to update. I have noted that my current kernel is kernel-2.6.18-194.8.1 whereas the current centosplus kernel seems to be 2.6.18-194.3.1. I presume that the problem is that the plus kernel is not as recent as the base kernel. Is this correct? What is the best way of converting to the centosplus kernel in these circumstances?

Software :: Convert A Bunch Of .ogg Files To Mp3 To Play On IPod - Unable To Convert With Sound Converter?

I have Ubuntu 9.04 and just installed Sound Converter. I am trying to convert a bunch of .ogg files to mp3 to play on my iPod and it's not working so well. In the Sound Converter options I have is set to convert to high quality mp3. I choose the folder that the files are in and after a moment (slow laptop) Sound Converter populates, I hit 'convert' and it shows that the conversion completes in two seconds. All that it did was create the new folder structure of artist/album but there is nothing in there. Not sure what I am missing. I used Sound Converter before and it worked fine.

Software :: FLAC Files To Convert Or Not To Convert To CD-DA?

Dec 24, 2010

I have a lot of .flac files downloaded from several sites. Most of them come with a .cue file, and the .jpg with the cover, etc. It seems it is the intention of the uploader that one rebuilds the original CDDA. However, if I had a stand-alone CD/DVD player with flac I would hardly see the point of converting the flac to cdda. Furthermore, I could even play the flacs with a software player although, in this case, the audio quality would not be so good due to the noise picked up by the signal from the PC digital circuits.

CentOS 5 :: Convert Between "ASCII English Text" And "ASCII Text"?

Aug 3, 2011

This is weird, and I never noticed before, but now I have an application that is borking on weird things like when /etc/hosts is of one file format or another, and I don't even know the difference between the two (google doesn't tell much either). on CentOS 5.5/5.6 x86_64: a which on the following is an interesting tell:

vi = /bin/vi
vim = /usr/bin/vim

both are actually vim version 7.0.237 but sum differently, and although they are both actually separate executables in the stock installs of CentOS I've been building, on most distros, and older versions of CentOS it seems, vi is usually just a symlink to vim - but again, not in these fresh installs it seems. When I create a file with the 'vi' above, it defaults (usually) to "ASCII text" (but not always) When I create a file with the 'vim' above, it defaults to "ASCII English text" (and causes a particular application I'm working with to bork and barf). It seems the OS is installed by default yielding both file types too, as evidenced by the following:

Fedora :: Convert Deb Into Rpm?

Dec 30, 2010

I need to install the hsupa modem driver in my fedora 13. The driver that came with the modem is in deb format (hsupa_i386.deb). I want to convert it into rpm. I used Alien to convert deb to rpm. I followed the instructions given in [URL] when i run the command ./alien.pl -r hsupa_i386.deb, i get the following

[root@anish alien]# ./alien.pl -r hsupa_i836.deb
tar: ./usr/sbin/hspa.sh: Cannot change ownership to uid 0: Operation not permitted
tar: ./usr/sbin: Cannot change ownership to uid 0, gid 0: Operation not permitted
tar: ./usr: Cannot change ownership to uid 0, gid 0: Operation not permitted
so on......

I tried the same without being root, then it says alien is not running as root!.

I need this driver to be installed to connect to the internet. Is there any other way to convert it to rpm?, I have attached the deb file here as a zip file (as deb file cannot be attached here!)

Ubuntu :: Trying To Convert Avi To Dvd?

Sep 7, 2010

I just realized I should have posted this in the multimedia forum. I tried to delete it, but did not find an option for that under edit. Hi there - I'm trying to convert an avi file into an ISO that I can burn to DVD. I found a page that gave really good, step by step instructions, on this site:[URL].. But things did not go quite according to plan. When I tried the first step, it said couldn't find any package whose name or description matched "lame-extras". I then got the following output, followed by all the installation stuff:

The following NEW packages will be installed: dvdauthor ffmpeg lame libavdevice52{a} libavfilter0{a} liblzo2-2{a} libmp3lame0{a} libsvga1{a} libxvidcore4{a} mencoder mplayer{a} 0 packages upgraded, 11 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

Undaunted, I plowed ahead (what's the worst that could happen?), and went through with the rest of the steps. Finally, I created the dir to do the conversion, cd'ed into it, and ran the script, as instructed, and got the following (the file that I was using was an episode of Entourage, just as a test, as it was the shortest avi file I had):

Ubuntu :: Convert From 32 Bit To 64 Bit?

Feb 25, 2011

I'm finally upgrading my 1GB RAM P3-800 fileserver by replacing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM in the otherwise good case. I'm moving to a quad-core AMD-64 CPU and 16GB RAM, and so I figured it'd be worthwhile to switch over to a 64-bit system at the same time (though it'll probably be a little faster either way, which has almost nothing to do with the CPU). But I hate having to reconfigure everything manually.

I did some searches, and there are several threads that say "no, you can't just convert". But why not? This isn't a desktop system, so I don't care about junk like Flash and the latest nVidia drivers. I'm essentially just replacing libc, programs linked against libc, and the kernel. Shouldn't this just be a matter of reinstalling all of the existing packages - which is very much the same thing as changing the distro version? What super mega secret complexity of "larger integers" am I missing?
