Software :: VirtualBox Eats RAM

Oct 23, 2010

I have a powerful server with 24GB of ram and an Intel Xenon quad core processor that I'm using to run a bunch of virtual machines for an office on using VirtualBox. Lately there has been a problem though. If I run free this is what I get:

[Code]...

I have sysstat install so I ran sar -r on the command line and I found:

[Code]....

a little before 2:45 PM I had my RAM eaten. Going back through my brain I remember that at that time I ran the command VBoxManage clonehd XXXXX.vdi to clone one of my virtual hard drives. I tried this again to make sure that the VBoxManage clonehd command was really the thing that was eating my RAM and it was. My question is - how do I reclaim the RAM. When the process that ate all the ram finished (I think it's the VBoxSVC process) it just leaves me with all my RAM used. How do I free up the RAM without restarting the server?

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 Eats Up Disk Space?

Feb 7, 2010

Maybe it's specific feature, but it does not seem right that within ~30 m to 1h 3gb of disk space on /home are gone due to I can't tell what exactly. Usually it happens while listening to music via vlc or browsing www (chrome and firefox). I got 3gigs of ram (95% in use under such conditions), and 1,5gb of swap that is not used at all by the system. Its a KDE.

Ubuntu :: Psychess Eats 100% CPU While Playing

Mar 11, 2011

No doubt Psychess is a very nice game for playing chess. I was playing this game often. But one thing I observed today is Psychess starts to eat 100% CPU right after the moment we start the game. I came to know about this after observing the "System Monitor" applet graph on the panel. This must not be normal because it's common sense when developer develops a software they always consider the CPU usage.. Even when I develop scripts I always give a sleep after heavy resource usage. For the record, I installed DreamChess and it works fine.

Debian :: Bluetooth Eats Up Logs

Jul 27, 2010

I just got a USB bluetooth adapter for my Laptop. I'm running Lenny with all the lateset updates, on and Ispiron 8600. I went through and made sure I installed all the Bluez stuff (as far as I can tell anyway). I'm trying to use it with my Droid Eris and while I have been able to successfully recieve files from the phone in Linux, I noticed it seems a little buggy and I think it ma have something to do with the logs. Below is a sample. As you can see, one line keeps repeating continuously. Given enough time, it will fill the entire /var partition. When I remove the Blutooth, it stops.

Code:

hal9000:/var/log# tail -F syslog

OpenSUSE Hardware :: AHCI Causes That Udev Eats To Much Cpu

Apr 23, 2010

/sbin/udevd --daemon eats about 10-15% of cpu which is quite high. I found out that it is caused by AHCI. If I turn it off in bios, udev takes only about 0-1% of cpu (which I consider normal). However turning AHCI off is deadly for Windows Vista (I have dual boot) - it always ends up with BSOD. Actually, I don't even know what AHCI does. Of course I found some information on the net but I didn't found whether there are some advantages for me. Is it worth 10-15% of cpu (consequently shorter battery life)? On the other hand, I have no interest in changing my bios settings every time I boot to Windows so it would be much confortable to have it turned on all the time. The best solution would be to find out why AHCI does this and how to configure udev to avoid it. And I don't know how.I have OpenSuse 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.12

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pulseaudio Eats Up 100% And Needs To Be Restarted

Jan 27, 2010

I'm on 9.10 and I use huludesktop often to watch my Hulu queue. Every once in a while (and more so lately) the video freeze and the sound stutters. I then find that pulseaudio is taking 100% of a CPU (I have a quad core AMD 64bit machine). Killing pulseaudio causes huludesktop to continue without sound and a new pulseaudio starts up. I have to kill huludesktop and resume playback and then everything's OK, until it happens again.

It works very well on my work machine (8-core Mac Pro running Ubuntu with 8GB of RAM).

OpenSUSE :: How To Use VirtualBox To Run Win 7 VM

Aug 10, 2011

I have been going through forums and following "how to's" and walkthroughs on how to use VirtualBox to run my Win 7 VM. I have a pre-created VHD that I am importing to my OpenSuse 11.4 machine. One vhd was created in Hyper-V and has hardware and cpu cross compatibility turned on. Everything works perfect when booting it up on my Hyper-V server. When I move it over to my OpenSuse VirtualBox the VM will not boot. It gets to the "Starting Windows" screen and then throws an error screen that the VM encountered errors while booting. It then runs the Window's startup recovery tool and even tried to do a system restore. Nothing works and it never progresses beyond that point. Figuring there was something with the vhd file. I used Acronis Advanced Backup and Recovery to create a non hardware dependent backup that was automatically converted to a vhd. I know the process works as that is how I have converted the bulk of the servers at work into VM's. However, when I move the vhd file to the OpenSuse VirtualBox... it does the same thing.

So I am trying to figure out what might be going on here. Is VirtualBox not able to virtualize Win 7? If not then what VM software should I use? VMWare, Xen, ???

Networking :: How To Do NAT In VirtualBox

May 10, 2011

I'm using VirtualBox 4 on OpenSuse 11.3.

I've 6 vm with different OS.

My company uses a net in 10.x.x.x. But I can't use IP of that range (only one for the host). I use IP for my vm in the range 192.168.x.x.

I need my vm to communicate each other, to the host and outside. From outside (10.x.x.x), don't need to access 192.x.x.x.

How do I have to configure Virtualbox?

- Tried with host-only. VM can see each other, but not the outside.
- Tried with NAT. Then VM can't see each other.
- Tried with bridge. Then can't see outside.

Fedora :: F12 - Can't Get VirtualBox Running ?

Dec 29, 2009

I've been trying to get a converted virtual disk running in VirtualBox for the past several days. The VM begins to boot in a window but never gets past a black field. Until today the title bar would always change from "running" to "suspended" and just hang there. Now it just keeps saying "running" but never boots so I'm thinking the virtual disk may have become corrupted from repeated shutdowns without ever booting.

The User Manual at VirtualBox.org is of little help since it appears to assume you're using their packages. They also make references to utilities or scripts like "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv" that aren't even in the latest version so I think it hasn't been updated in a while.

There doesn't appear to be many hints in the Vbox.log either - couldn't find a way to get more verbose logging. Until now I'd get to this point and it wouldn't change until I shut it down:

I'm guessing the reason for the suspension was the message immediately above the notice. Now I just see the "unmapped device" message and the guest window says "running" indefinitely. I've attached copies of logs from a couple of sessions, one where it suspends itself (a vnc session) and another where it just stays running (a console session). Some googling suggested that the "unmapped device" message implies it can't find the boot drive or the boot sector on the virtual disk.

The host is normally accessed through a VNC session to a virtual console but VBox log messages indicate that it cannot determine the keyboard type when accessed this way so I now have to physically sit at the native console. If anyone knows of a way to overcome this limitation I'm all ears.

People don't usually respond to my threads so I'm basically talking to myself outloud here. I'll read it again later an maybe come up with something else to try. For now I'm going to remove all the VBox packages and re-install them, starting from scratch. If that doesn't get it working I'll delete the converted virtual disk and re-convert it from the original. If I still can't get VBox working after that I'll be forced to install VMware Server (resource hog). I'm getting desperate now...

[Background] Until a few weeks ago we were happily using qemu-kvm but encountered a bug when using the "-smb" argument after updating the host from Fedora 9 to 12. (re: F12: qemu-kvm with -smb hangs then dies) In an attempt to get our virtualized MS Windows Server 2003 back up and running I installed VirtualBox-OSE-3.0.10-1.fc12.x86_64 and friends over the Christmas break. I converted the qemu qcow2 image to raw then to vdi format using qemu-img and VBoxManage tools. There were no errors during the install of VirtualBox. In the beginning Bug Buddy notified of a crash whenever we started up VBox but after some digging and experimenting I believe the crashes were caused by running VBox in a VNC session instead of at the console. I haven't seen a crash when starting it in a native console session. Unfortunately, this means I can do very little remotely.

Everything works in the virtual machine however it doesn't see any 3D hardware therefore not letting me run these games. I had W7 installed on the computer before and I love fedora and I don't want to dual boot. Is there anyway that anyone knows how to get this working or is there another program that can run a virtual machine for me? Quick update, I installed somethings using the Device menu and Install Guest Additions. That go some mouse and a better video resolution to work however, when using dxdiag in Windows 7, it says that the 3D Acceleration is unavailable. In the settings I have 3D accelration enabled of course.
