Software :: Tool For Replacing First Match Per Line?
May 4, 2010
I've got a file that I want to convert to a CSV format.
Each line of the file is something like:
term1a term1b [pronunciation] definition
term2a term2b [pronunciation] definition
term3a term3b [pronunciation] definition
To get it into CSV, I just need to perform 3 find and replace operations:
First, replace the first " " (space) with a "," (comma). Next, replace the first " [" (space and right-facing square bracket) with a "," (comma). Finally, replace the first "] " (left-facing square bracket and a space) with a "," (comma).
The reason it must only be the first such occurance, is the definition area contains lots of spaces and square brackets which I'd like to leave left untouched.

I have two files, file1.traj and file2.traj. Both these files contain identical data and the data are arranged in same format in them. The first line of both files is a comment.
At line 7843 of both files there is a cartesian coordinate X, Y and Z ( three digits ). And at line 15685 there is another three digits. The number of lines in between two cartesian coordinates are 7841. And there are few hundreds of thousands of lines in a file.
What I need to do is copy the X Y Z coordinate (three digits) from file1.traj at line 7843 and paste into file2.traj at the same line number as in file1.traj. The next line will be 15685 from file1.traj and replace at line 15685 at file2.traj. And I dont want other lines (data) in file2.traj get altered. This sequence shall be going on until the end of the file. Means copy and substitude the selected lines from file1.traj into file2.traj.
I tried to use paste command but I cant do for specified line alone.
Here i showed the data format in the file. I used the line number for clarity purpose.

Was wondering if any perl guru's could help me with a quick log file adjustment. I have a text file that looks like so (tabs and newlines are revealed so you can see what separates the data):
There are maybe 100 lines of text in this file at any given time. I need to delete all duplicate lines only looking at the first bit of text prior to the first tab. It doesn't matter which one gets deleted as long as there are no two lines that begin with that same text at the beginning before the first tab. So in this example, either the fist line "1234" or the last line "1234" would need to be deleted. I already have code in my script that opens the files - I just need the code to read the text into an array and the part that would find matches based on the above criteria, and make the deletions.
If it would be easier, I can even do a system call and use SED (v4.1.5) and/or AWK (3.1.5) instead.

I'm writing a bash script to search html files, and when I find any occurrence of an img src tag like this:
<img src="123-picture-normal.jpg" alt="some random user entered text" border="0">
I want to add a second line below it that looks like:
<img src="123-picture-thumbnail.jpg" alt="some random user entered text" border="0">
All I need to do is duplicate the line but replace "normal" with "thumbnail"
Each file can have multiple img src tags with different numbered jpgs.
I have a feeling this is a job for sed, but I'm struggling with it. Any ideas?

I need to edit the sudo file on lots of machines. I figure the easiest way is to run a for loop to ssh to each box, sed the sudoers file to a new file & copy/move back over the top of the original (and of course, change permissions accordingly)
The problem is, I'm not sure how to add a line after a match with sed.
So if my file looks like:
Code:
I'd like it to add the new sudoer after "other" so the file looks like:
Code:

I need a substitution of a particular string (StringA) with another string (StringB). However, there may be more than one occurrence of StringA within the file, but only one instance needs to be changed, which is why I'm trying to be sure of it's positioning against something I know will be unique in the file, and will always have the same distance from the string to be replaced. So, I intend to match on a string (StringC) above the string to be substituted and then have sed go to StringA below and replace with StringB.
So far, I have had some success with the following:
Code:
... but I can't help thinking that there *has* to be a cleaner way of doing it.

Every time I try to set to standard.(cautious|medium|advanced) I get Apr 26 17:20:59.960 7f7faff15700 Fatal error: can't load actions file '/etc/privoxy/match-all.action': invalid line (9): { +standard.Cautious } /
or something similar. No additional help is available in the docs. So i try to use http://p.p (i.e. config.privoxy.org), and click on [URL]... expecting to get the three mode buttons. It just returns to p.p.
I already set the three edit vars to allow remote editing etc.So I looked in the top 15 Google hits for "Privoxy standard.Cautious". Apparently, nobody else knows how to do this either even tried launching firefox in root. but I'm getting kind-of frustrated with the writers/maintainers of Privoxy 3.

This is a bit of a long shot and I think the answer will be no but I thought I'd ask just in case. I have a number of tutorials in html but I want to be able to search for particular information in these files and display that information in the terminal rather than having to go through a browser. Apart from using grep which gives a pretty messy display or having to write a a specially Bash or python script, is there any command line tools that can provide such a function?

I have the following query:
Code:
$sql="SELECT table1.datetime, table1.user_id, table2.ip, FROM table1,table2 WHERE id='$id' AND (table1.id = table2.id AND table1.datetime = table2.datetime)";
In table2 the datetime fields are about 1 to 2 seconds off due to the source of the data, which I cannot change.
Is it possible via a query match table1.datetime & table2.datetime by HH:MM (ie. to the minute instead of to the second)?

Just a quick question, is there a system user management app that could be accessed via a website for red hat (or really any distro)? Something kinda like phpMyAdmin, but can do useradd, userdel, groupadd, etc. For remote admins who don't know how to use ssh or the command line.

I have Inkscape 0.48 running on a windows xp laptop, but I can't find a way of getting it onto my desktop system running Ubuntu 8.04, which I need to run EMC2.
If I use apt-get to download the latest version, it gets 0.46, which has a cursor/tool bug in it.(The cursor doesn't line up with the tool on screen).
Is it possible for me to successfully transfer 0.48 via a memory stick to the desktop, without jeopardizing the Ubuntu system, or is there some other way ?

I'm looking for a script or a tool I can use from the command line, non-interactively, to add users to our LDAP server.
I could write a wrapper for ldapsearch, ldapadd and ldapmodify, or write something from scratch in perl, but I imagine someone has done this already.

I know I can just copy the homedirectory but I wanted to do it via script so new user accounts could also have the common bells and whistles we use.So really I have two questions.1. Is it possible to add programs to the Gnome Tool Bar from command line? aka via a script2. Is it possible to modify the default panel template so new users get my changes?

I am writing an expect script. At a certain point there is a rule that produces this debugging output:
Code:
expect: does " Address or name of remote host [x.x.x.x]? " (spawn_id exp8) match glob pattern " Address or name of remote host [x.x.x.x]? "? no This just times out When I use -exact for the expect keyword it does work What am I doing wrong? THe first should also match in my opinion because it is equal as well. Even if I remove the I still have the same issue if I try without -exact. I don't understand. I tried removing the but still got the same.

I've read up some of the posts on this forum, but can't seem to find an answer. I have a web service within an Apache Tomcat instance installed on a Redhat linux server. I only have shell access to the server, and need to monitor outbound network traffic from my web service. Is there a unix command that will allow me to monitor all outbound traffic? I'm thinking fiddler, but a unix version? I've heard of things like ntop and iptraf, but I don't think those will help me in this instance.
