General :: Gnome Disk Utility Warned That Hard Drive Had Numerous Bad Sectors / Fix It?
Feb 21, 2010I recently tried Fedora on my laptop (previously Debian; I was bored one day) and gnome-disk-utility (palimpsest) warned me that my hard drive had numerous bad sectors. I re-installed Debian to find that this software was installed before so why had it not warned me?
When I load the disk utility, it says SMART is not available. I've got smartmontools installed, I can run a self-test with smartctl but I don't think this shows bad sectors. I've tried starting smartd on startup but the disk utility never changes from "SMART is not available". It is possible for it to work with this hardware as it works in Fedora on this laptop; any ideas?

Jul 26, 2011My sister's laptop (toshiba satellite l550 running lucid) often runs really, really slow, even after a fresh install. Going through the gnome main menu, everything just lags by several seconds. Closing applications often takes a while, etc. I've run top and iostat to determine what the problem is and it seems to be IO-related. User processes and system processes don't take up more than a few percent, but the average load is usually over 2 even when I'm barely doing anything. Top shows that, whenever everything slows down, the 'wait' criterion is pretty high.
Now, I've also tried installing lucid to an external USB hard drive and that works fine. I'm currently running the S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic and so far I've got the attached screenshot to show. Only the criterion shown and the 'current pending sector count' are showing warnings.Any thoughts? Could the performance issue be related to the hard drive warning? I'm not planning to replace the hard drive just yet, because this laptop still has a two-year warranty.
Fedora :: 11 System Freeze With Dd Dump
Jul 17, 2009i've got a non-typical problem here. i've got kvm-ed freebsd (its not so important here) stored on a block device - /dev/sdb8. i wanted to install fedora rawhide there but first i thought it's a good idea to do some backup. so here we go dd if=/dev/sdb8 of=freebsd.img bs=4k
theoretically, dd should do the thing without saying a word, but it doesn't. every time it stops after reaching 16GB filesize (partition is about 35GB) and completely locks the system (only reset helps).the dump worked only once, but when i tried to compress this big image 7z got stucked too and the system froze . the problem occurs when copying to the same drive or to different drive. i've got a partial kerneloops logs, but so far i haven't found the answer.

General :: Rebuild System From Dump Tape?
Feb 8, 2010I have a Red Hat Enterprise (AS) 4.8 system and I need to know how to totally rebuild the system from dump tape. I have been making some full level 0 dumps of the system to the attached DAT72 tape drive... In the case the boot disk goes south, I need to reload from tape, onto a new disk drive. I know how to do this in Solaris. I assume you boot from CD to like a mini-root, then configure and mount the drive on temp mount points, restore the sys data, then load the "boot blocks" (like installboot on solaris).

Oct 7, 2009I want to generate core dump files from my program when it crashes. Its a pretty big process and has about 10-11 threads in it.I have followed the documentation to enable core dump by setting ulimit to unlimited etc. I quickly tried "A demo program creating a core dump" from the following webpage, which succeeds in Segfault and dumping a core file in the directory that I configured.However, I tried running my original program and caused it to crash. I did this by making calls to kill(), raise() or the same null pointer access as shown in the webpage above. In each case, my program crashed but did not generate a core dump file. Am I missing something?My program is in C++ and my environment is Redhat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20)
Going through the "Why do I NOT get a core dump?" section on the same webpage as above, I can see two potential problems. One - there are issues with the suid/sgid (bullet # 6). I am not able to change any settings with suid because my system does not contain either /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable or /proc/sys/kernel/suid_dumpableTwo, my program has threads in it and the bullet # 8 is the problem.

Oct 7, 2010I'm working on a script. fter it has installed and removed packages, I need to configure a ton of settings. In GNOME, I understand that those settings are kept in "/home/user/.gconf". Can I create a virtual machine and configure the system through the GUI to my liking and then dump all of the settings, so that I can load them on another machine? Is it as simple as copying the directories?

I am a Ubuntu user and could not get my GeForce 9100 on board graphics to work on my new computer with out crashing my computer so I decided I would try fedora. I downloaded the driver from NVidia and I am attempting to install it (Fedora didn't automatically find the driver). I get the following message:
"Error Unable to find the system utility 'ld'; Please make sure you have the 'binutils' installed. If you do have the bin utils installed, then please check that 'ld' is in your PATH."
I am running the driver from $Download as root. I don't know what ld or bin utils is or the check if I have it or if it is in my PATH.

Jun 20, 2010The system is a Dell 530n. It came preinstalled with Ubuntu 8.04. I didn't care for the way Dell handled its repositories (they don't keep them current) so I installed Ubuntu 10.04.
Now when I select "F12 Boot Options" while the BIOS is bringing things to life, I still get the various boot options, however, when I select "Utility Partition" all I get is "Not found. No boot device available."
For those not familiar, the Dell Utility Partition is a hidden partition that has various utilities to help troubleshoot hardware problems.
What did Ubuntu 10.04 do and how do I fix this?
Fedora :: Getting Console Input During System Startup?
Jan 26, 2010I am setting up a system for students to use to run lab-based exams. On bootup, the system needs to download an encrypted file containing the exam files, and then ask for a decryption password.
I want to do this during system startup (before anyone logs in). But I am having trouble getting keyboard input at this point.
I've put a script in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99examsetup along the following lines:

but it doesn't respond to keyboard input. I have tried appending "< /dev/console" but this also doesn't work; in fact if I insert 'tty' before the first 'echo', it tells me that /dev/console is the tty being used for input anyway.
Is there a way round this? I can use plymouth ask-for-password, but that doesn't seem very portable, and it interacts badly with the graphics driver on one of my machines.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot 11.4 On Dualboot Nvdia G7600 Based System - Fresh Install "system Console Stolen At Line"
Apr 22, 2011I tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).
I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

Slackware :: Console App Causing System To Hang On Shutdown?
Jul 14, 2011I have been looking for a lightweight bandwidth monitoring app and came across bmon. It does what I need. However it has an interesting way of exiting.
when it is running and you close it down it ask you 'Really quit (y/n)' and does not shut down. I am used to just right clicking on my desktop and selecting 'leave' when it comes to shutdown time.
A few times now the laptop hangs on shutdown if bmon is open. I guess it is due to the app asking if it should shutdown. Is there a way to disable the app asking or alternatively nuke it for sure with some script on shutdown.
I could search the relevant konsole running the app and go thru the steps to shut it down but sometimes I am in a hurry and it doesn't feel like the way to go anyhow?

For example, if I switch to a VT from X, login, and leave the system alone for 5 minutes or so, the screen will blank like a screensaver. It comes back with any keypress, like a screensaver.
Mostly I just want to change the timeout, but I'm also interested in other settings.
If it helps, one of my systems is running Ubuntu 10.04 with the stock graphics drivers. fbset shows the console using the radeondrmfb framebuffer device.

May 23, 2011I built a 11.04 server system in vmware workstation a few days ago, set it up for something and now I have a strange problem. It boots without problem. I can login via ssh, the services run and everything is OK from the outside. But on the console there's just a fast blinking cursor on the screen, no login or anything to that affect. Just blank and a blinking cursor.

Sep 7, 2010I have some errors on my drive and I fear it may be faulty. However there are a few things I would like to try before replacing it through the manufacture or buying a new drive of my own seeing as this is a brand new computer.
Here is my computer and drive:
Acer 5251-1513 Laptop
Toshiba MK2565GSX
Running Fedora 13...now
Here is what is going on. Tried several version of Ubuntu 10.4 (studio, 64bit, 32 bit) and was having many errors during startup and having to press F to fix. Then I lost something with Gnome and the GUI would not function, and I did not know how to replace it. Tried a few other distros but could not get them to work (mostly on my part I am sure.) Then after some forum talk, thought it might just be Ubuntu unable to handle my drive. Now on Fedora 13 and a warning comes up every time I startup. "Disk has many bad sectors"
In the disk utility under the SMART Data it has 2 of the following warnings:
5- Reallocated Sector count..with a value of 72 sectors
197 Current Pending Sector count...with a value of 35 sectors
Total Bad Sectors 108.
The next day that went up to 110
I have used Fsck several times through a live CD, but the problem persists. Trying to understand bad blocks and how to write them to a file?
Hardware :: Aligning Sectors For An SSD?
Aug 3, 2010I have an Acer tiny desktop using laptop components and I want to replace its small laptop hdd running Vista with a Kingston SSDNow V Series Boot Drive 30GB and install Ubuntu, since it will support TRIM. I am aware of the current issues on some new hard drives with 512 vs. 4k sector sizes and the necessity to align sectors for those drives. And I know I've seen some posts or discussion of aligning sectors for SSD's.
I'll be doing more searching for info on this, but my previous searches on the 4K sector alignment issue for the new WD hdd's on linux were confusing. Does anyone have definitive information on the necessity of aligning 4k sectors on current Linux kernels, or on whether aligning sectors is necessary for SSD's?

General :: NTFS - Marking Sectors Bad ?
Feb 20, 2011I have a massive ZFS array on my fileserver. Whenever a disk reports bad sectors to smartmon, I order a replacement, and I shelve the failing one.
And by "shelving the failing one", I mean that I give it a low-level format if applicable, or a destructive badblocks run to possible claim spare sectors to replace the bad ones, then use it to dump my DVDs (and lately BluRays) on, so that I can use it with my HTPC and bring it with me when going to my friends to watch movies. It's just a really easy and portable way to watch movies with XBMC. I have the stuff on pressed discs already, so I'm not dependent on their reliance, and the dying drive just gets a hospice life serving as quick-access media storage. Keeping in mind Google's reports that drives are 39x more likely to die within 60 days after their first SMART error, I'm expanding that period by the fact that these drives mostly remain on their shelves and are only plugged into the SATA bay once or twice every year.
I'm just saying this to make clear that I'm not confused about these drives dying, and I'm not looking to elongate their lives ;)
So. Sometimes these drives, after a badblocks run, simply claim fresh sectors from the spare pool, but sometimes there aren't any left, and I face the fact that there are bad sectors in my FS. That's not a problem if you use one of a set of linux filesystems, as mkfs.* often takes a badblocks list as input. But seeing as I sometimes bring a drive or two to my girlfriend's (Mac) or one of my friends (usually Windows), I've decided to use NTFS for these things. Up untill now, when a drive had unrelocatable bad sectors, I've just written data to it, re-read it, and files that were bad were put in a "BAD_SECTOR_FILES" folder on the drive.
Sure, it works, but it would be really nice to be able to just mark those sectors bad instead. It's a lot of hassle the other way around.
So I read some posts, of which most quickly switch subject to the often accurate one of "replace your drive!", and some suggest spinrite, but really, I don't see why I should pay that much money for such a trivial task.
The alternative is to use ext3, but I'd like to hear if someone knows how I can feed badblocks output to mkfs.ntfs, so that the bad blocks aren't used. Or if there are other tools (I could use Windows in a VM) that do the same. I'm confused about chkdsk, it seems the bad sectors thing is FAT only?

Feb 17, 2010Since a few days all of my computers (3) running Ubuntu 9.10 report on startup that my external drive has "lots of bad sectors".I have checked this disk on Windows XP with chkdsk and with the SeaTools diagnostic tool dowloaded from Seagate. Both report no problems.Does anyone else suspect these Ubuntu "bad sector" warnings are unreliable?
