I have an ubuntu server with a terabyte hard drive 20 of it have linux install on it and the the rest of it is partitioned to NTFS, i did this using a live Gparted cd, My question is how do I mount and share the NTFS partition with windows. I made an attempt by following a tutorial but i'm pretty sure it did not work because when accessing the network drive in windows 7 it tells me the size of it is 20 gigs,
View 25 RepliesI finally have my ubuntu up and running. I have a USB-drive which is often connected to my Ubuntu-machine. I want to share this via Samba but I can't set the user-rights. If I try to acces the file (via windows machine) I can see the directory but if I open it it gives me: \Computermediadirectory is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. I tried setting the rights but it just 'changes back immediately'. I found some posts about not being able to set rights via ubuntu on a ntfs disk. If I mount it via fstab it will give an error when the USB-drive is not connected. So that's no option. Is there a way to share this drive via my Samba server? I did get access to a partition on my linux-machine, to I assume my samba-settings are correct.

I've run DiskInternals Partition Recovery tool, and all my files are still there (you have to pay $139 to have it restore the files). Is there any way using tools in linux to restore the ntfs partition/files? It was a single disk with the partition taking the entire drive. I've tried mounting it with the -t option, but it says invalid ntfs signature. Man, two lessons the hard way, make sure you backup (duh) and be careful what you type as root.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
I am doing major deployment of opensuse 313 pcs from windows to opensuse. I am having a problem that I have to keep 2 ntfs partitions intact will deleting the partition that has windows. Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.

I have a dual boot PC with an NTFS partition on it that I want to share across the network. It has my music on it which I am going to keep for a while until I find a suitable iTunes replacement.
I also have a server and have mounted those shared ext3 drives ok using NFS and configuring fstab and exports. Works a treat.
With this one, I am getting a error: "ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '192.168.xx.xx:/nfs/xpdata': No such file or directory" when I try to mount it on the remote client machine. I can access the local mount fine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI feel like there's some user/group/mount concepts I need to understand to pull this off: I have a dual boot ubuntu/XP rig and I'm storing some active work files on an NTFS partition because so I can use these files from both OSes (because Windows can't read my ext3 partition, but ubuntu CAN read NTFS) Now, I need to access these files (on the NTFS partition) from my 2nd computer... which means I need to config an ubuntu FTP server (currently pureftp, but I'm not picky) to serve the files on that NTFS partition.
Like I said, I'm using PureFTP, but I'm not picky. It's not working right because of (i think) permissions and directory ownership "stuff" that I don't quite understand. Add "mounting" the NTFS drive to the mix, and my brain fails. I'm not too terribly afraid of a non-GUI ftp server, so if anybody can offer some guidance, concepts or general clue-sticking about how I can get the NTFS mount and permissions and the ftp user context sorted out
I have an external USB hard drive at /dev/sdb1 (NTFS)
2 users: johnny, audio
for some reason this drive is mounted at /media/TREKSTOR_ with johnny as the owner. I can't seem to chown the drive to audio. If I unmount the device, and remount it, the owner is set to johnny again. I need to access this drive from the audio account.It's a 1TB drive, so I wouldn't be able to reformat it to EXT3 easily as it's almost 60% full.
I've got a SATA drive (formatted as NTFS) I share between an XP machine and an Ubuntu machine. From Ubuntu, I never write to the drive... I only write to it from the XP box. So, I am wondering about a couple of things:
- If I do write to it from the Ubuntu machine, will that create any problems. By that I mean, if I add, rename, edit files from the Ubuntu machine, will that negatively affect anything?
- If, from the Ubuntu machine, I set perms on the files and folders on the drive, how will that affect things when I plug it back into the XP machine?
About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.
Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW
Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.
info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.
At the end of installion,lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.
Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.
But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.
After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr,lenny boot from lenny's grub.
The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.
I just installed ubuntu via the windows executable and I couldn't mount my NTFS partition. I found this a little odd and I checked fdisk and it seems to think I don't have an ext4 partition as my entire internal HD is displayed as NTFS.

Windows recognizes that 30GB were taken from the NTFS partition for my linux install. It reads the max partition size as 465GB. fstab reports the NTFS partition size as 488GB.
Recently I reinstall Grub, but I have chosen on ntfs (windows 7 partition E: drive). After this I chosen /dev/sda which is correct boot partition.
Now Fedora 10 and Win 7 booth are working properly.

First off let me say that I love working with Ubuntu. It's a great OS to learn Linux on. Now on to my problem. I have a laptop that dual boots. Ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Been working just fine. I was using NTFS-Config to auto mount the Win7 partition during startup of Ubuntu. It has been running fine. I am able to move files between the linux partition and the NTFS partition with no problem. Now I've come across a problem. I big problem. Just this week I installed VirtualBox onto Ubuntu. I started creating virtual machines. 6 in all (3 Win 2k3, 1 2k8 and 1 Win7). I was saving the virtual machines to the NTFS drive as this was by far my largest drive. I used a directory titled "virtualbox" under the c:/users/public directory. This setup was working great. Was able to get my vm's patched and up to date. Created several snapshots. Basically I was a happy camper.
Last night I booted into Windows 7. OS started fine. I was just surfing the web. After that I rebooted the system and entered Ubuntu and started Virtualbox. I tried to start a vm and it complained that the virtual harddrive was missing. I checked to make sure that the path was correct for the virtual drive and discovered that the entire virtualbox directory that I created on the NTFS partion was gone!!! Everything else was in place and intact including music and large video files that I had downloaded to the Ubuntu partion and moved the the NTFS partion.
I save these virtual machines???? Should I abandon using NTFS-Config. This is somewhat critical since I had took sometime to create this test lab and to have it disappear from simply booting into Windows 7 is crazy.
I've enabled Samba share on Fedora firewall... now i can view the shares on Windows Computers on my network but Windows PC can't see my shares on Fedora...
Also my wireless Router/Modem (D-Link DSL G604T) reports the names of the Windows PC connected to it but names my Fedora Machine as unknown...
i am able to set up samba server with adc it is working properly. also i set the GID and stikki bit permission in sharing so i can set only crater can delete the files. But i want some users have ability to delete permission for all files and folders in that sharing

I shared home folders to be accessible from a Windows XP notebook computer which my wife uses some times. One of the folders contains many pictures which I later renamed (bulk rename at the ubuntu box). The pictures at the Windows box still have the old name and they can be opened as usual. However, when my wife rotated a picture and saved it with the same name, the picture just disappeared. For some reason It can not display the new names. I removed the Thumbs.db files, restarted samba and re-configure again the connection with samba but no luck. It is not a big problem but I was wondering if someone knows what this is happening?This is my samba config file:

I have a Lucid server with several external (eSATA) NTFS formatted drives. Right now, I'm sharing everything through Samba and administered through Webmin. Partly because I'd like to play with it and learn more and partly to see if there's any appreciable difference in overhead and speed, I'd like to try out NFS.
My question is, can the two sharing schemes (NFS and Samba) coexist on the same box peacefully?If not, I can rid of Samba and go with NFS, but I'd rather give it a shot first.Plus, some of the clients are Windows machines, so I'd have to install the SFU tools in order to get an NFS client on them.
I recently installed ubuntu on one of my computers and am trying to get all my sharing worked out so I can access stuff with my windows machine. I'm still very stupid when it comes to linux.
Setting up sharing with Samba, I got my /home/user/media folder to share just fine. However I made a folder located on my second drive that I would like to share.
I have this entry for it in my smb.conf

the second drive is mounted on /media/Sifl_80GB and it was formatted as ext4.
My windows machines see the 80GBshare entry but I get the error "network path not found" when I try to open the folder. Does this mount need to be listed in my fstab for this to work correctly? I'm noticing something in the comments of the smb.conf for auto-mounting a cdrom drive when a cdrom drive is accessed by adding a fstab entry, so I'm wondering if this needs to be done with my second drive?
I attempted to share my ~/Videos folder using the Folder Sharing dialog when right-clicking a folder in Nautilus. It started to install but failed partially spitting out some error that I didn't bother to read/write down. It asked me to restart which I did. But now when reattempting to share the folder, I get given the following message: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot create tmp file /var/lib/samba/usershares/:tmp0BRWpm
I've looked around for a thread for this particular error, but I can't find anything specific to the "cannot create tmp file" issue. I'm assuming it's some folder permission issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling samba from the Ubuntu Software Center.
We are running RedHat Enterprise Server 5. We have a Windows 7 Pro with an HP Printer attached to it, and shared. I can see the printer in RedHat, but everytime I send a print job, it just does nothing but sit there.
