Software :: SVN Won't See Filesystem / Resolve This?

Jun 17, 2011

I installed a new server with Centos 5.6, did all the upgrades and it is running smoothly. I copied my backup SVN directory structure over to the new server and set the permissions the same as they were on the old machine. But now when I try to access a repository, I get the following message:

svn: Could not open the requested SVN filesystem

My subversion.conf is set up in /etc/httpd/conf.d just as before and I restarted httpd. My svn access passwords are the same and in the same location.

Hardware :: Filesystem Check Can't Resolve Label / Formatting External Hard Drive

Jul 19, 2010

I'm trying to partition/format a new external hard disk for backup and have run into a snag that now prevents my computer from booting. In the description below of what happened please bear with me as I do my best to remember the commands and screen output (which for obvious reasons I don't have in front of me).As root. The disk was subsequently writable. However, I then realized that the default start and end cylinders had resulted in a very small partition apparently occupying some free cyclinders in the beginning of the disk.

So next I ran fdisk again, deleting the sdc4 I had just created and creating a new one instead, this time using the cylinders at the end of the disk. When I exited fdisk I got a message something like that the new tables can only be read upon a subsequent reboot. I ran mkfs again, but not e2label. Indeed using /sbin/fdisk -l, sdc4 still had the small size as defined initially. So I rebooted.

Now when it comes up I get something like "checking filesystems. fchk.ext3: can't resolve 'LABEL=/media/LaCie2TB1'" and am prompted to login as root to correct. I tried to simply delete sdc4 again but that didn't help. I also tried to edit /etc/fstab (using vi, which I don't know at all) but it kept telling me that this is a read only file, even though permissions are rw for root. Can anyone out there help me so that (1) I can boot into my computer, and (2) I can correctly partition and format the hard drive??

Red Hat / Fedora :: Filesystem Check After Power Outage - WARNING: "Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage"

May 18, 2011

I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message

*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)

Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.

Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

I try ext3:

I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?

Ubuntu :: Finding Filesystem Type/repair Broken Filesystem?

Jul 9, 2010

I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.

First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.

Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.

General :: External Drive Read Only - WARNING! Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage

Mar 24, 2010

I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.

Ubuntu :: Can't Log In / Resolve This?

Aug 19, 2010

After trying a "fix" I found on another thread, nobody can log into my laptop! After each attempt, a single message shows up in /var/log/messages code...

This worked for me:
Use a Ubuntu Live CD to boot up, and choose a command-line (shell) option.
With this, set your $HOME directory (/home/username) permissions to something appropriate (I used 755) and make sure all directories can be listed with the "ls" command. Then remove nautilus with code...

The only thing I did differently was I booted into recovery mode from the grub menu rather than from live CD.

Recently I saw the invitation on 'update manager' to upgrade to 10.04 & went ahead wih the download, but when the system tried to reboot the problems started &, I see from the forums, this seems to be a widespread problem. You get as far as UBUNTU & 5 dots then nothing. I have read as much as I can, understood a little but got nowhere so I thought I'd recover my files (hopefully) with the 8.04 CD using photorec & then reinstall my 8.04. Problem is the CD will not boot. I've used 'help' & installed the boot helper but I get the BusyBox message and don't know what command to put in.

Ubuntu :: Not Able To Boot / Resolve This?

Mar 17, 2011

I have been using Ubuntu for many years.
I bought a new hard drive (has not arrived yet) and getting ready to install it when it arrives.
My computer/workstation has a number of hard drives installed inside that are all SATA drives.
The boot drive (Ubuntu only, I do not use Windows) is a 500GB USB notebook drive installed in an external case.

I have an 80GB internal drive with an old Ubuntu install. I decided to remove that drive (pulled the drive) to make room for the new drive.

But the new drive did not come in the mail, so I put the computer back together without the old 80GB drive (SATA 0).

To my surprise it would not boot to the 500GB USB drive?
Black screen with the blinking dash...

Removed every drive but the USB 500GB drive and the CD from the BIOS boot menu. Made the USB THE drive to boot to.
Black screen with the blinking dash...

Using a 10.10 LiveCD I can access that 500GB drive.
Thus, it is hooked up and works but does not boot. Gparted says there is a BOOT FLAG in the Linux partition of the 500GB drive.

My only conclusion was I altered the boot order for GRUB so I put the 80GB drive back in the computer.
I did not edit GRUB in any way, I simply physically pulled the drive when the computer was off.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Keeps Freezing Up On Me / Resolve This?

Jun 13, 2011

i don't know what's happening here, but my computer keeps freezing in ubuntu... i can't figure out what's triggering it, because it happens when i'm doing different things. the time between freezes is always different, sometimes hours, sometimes a whole day, and sometimes back-to-back after a reboot. the only way to get out is a hard reset. whatever sound is playing will just continue to loop. it's happened while watching (non-full screen) videos, while using eclipse (luckily had just saved work), and while just general browsing. i tried reinstalling 11.04 because it happened before, and for a little while i thought it was fixed, but in the past few days it has picked up again. the only thing i can think of that i have installed was some new drivers for my bcm43225 wireless because it was always slow.

Debian :: Why Aptitude Can't Resolve Conflicts That Apt-get Can

Words isn't required here. I'll show examples:

Code: Select allThe following NEW packages will be installed:
  appstream{a} coinor-libcoinutils3v5{ab} coinor-libosi1v5{ab} cpp-5{a}
  g++-5{a} gcc-5{a} gcj-5-jre{a} gcj-5-jre-headless{a} gcj-5-jre-lib{a}

  kded5{a} kinit{a} kio{a} libapt-inst1.7{a} libapt-pkg4.16{a} libasan2{a}

[Code] ....

Why apt-get can while aptitude can't?

I've searched on web, and all I can tell is that aptitude is "safer" than apt-get because it taking account the packages on hold.

But I don't have any package on hold! (I've tested dpkg --get-selections | grep hold)

Debian :: Getting No Results In Aptitude / Resolve This?

Sep 18, 2010

I've been trying to use aptitude for package management, but nothing happens in response to my commands, even as root.

Let's say for example I want to purge popcon. According to the helpfile, I should start aptitude, become root (or vice-versa), select the package in the list and press '_' (underscore), and then it will be marked with something in the left column and a different color in the list. Then later, another command will actually do the purge.

But nothing happens. It doesn't get marked or change color or anything, and 'g' just gets the message 'No packages are scheduled to be installed, removed, or upgraded.'

What am i doing incorrectly?
