Do I understand correctly? When some new version of program comes out, it is available as a source code only. Then distros' maintainers download it and every maintainer builds his own version of the program for his distro. And every maintainer makes changes in the program, so Arch's program differs from the same program, built for Ubuntu. And for Fedora there is another version of this program that differs. And maintainer can do any changes in program he wants, so the program might even not to look like original one? It might be half of original one and another half is written by the maintainer.
I wonder why my hard disk (with Fedora 11 on) is not seen by live cd distros (I tried with Knoppix 6.2 and Vector Light). In the past (before f11) this never happened
when so many Linux distros are available for free..than why did u choose fedora only.? what features attracted u towards it and what makes it different from others Linux distributions.
I currently have one very big partition in my laptop that runs Ubuntu. I have to install Fedora for work and I'd also like to try out OpenSUSE, so I'll have to repartition. Since I don't want to duplicate data, I will move /home to a different partition and mount it from all three. I'd like to know, can I also do this with /var and /usr? If so, would that mean that every program I install will be available from all three?
I got Fedora LiveCD version on my USB....but I would like to test many other distros on the same USB. Is there a way to have all of the distros on my USB, and when I open the boot menu on startup, I can choose which distro to boot?

I have dual booted an acer 5220 laptop with Sabayon 4 and Ubuntu - Ubuntu was first on there and 8.10 saw my wifi card straight away, (in fact 8.4 saw it but only after conecting via ethernet to do the first round of updates) but Sabayon 4 just will not connect via wifi - Is it possible to take the working wifi part of the ubuntu installation? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? I love the look of Sabayon.
i have linux mint 10 installed on my system and i want to install fedora 14 too .since fedora 14 comes with grub legacy and not grub 2 so,if i install fedora 14 would the grub 2 that comes with Linux mint be over-written by grub leagacy if yes,then how do i install fedora 14 withoust losing grub 2
i am still a linux newbie. i'm trying to study the features of the different LINUX distros through installing ubuntu,debian,redhat,centos and fedora as Virtual Machines in VirtualBox.As i've figured out, they look different somehow, they have diffirent managers ,i.e. for downloading or updating their components. BUT MY QUESTION: are these distros internally compatible ?
Do any commands exist in one distro but not in the others? ARE ALL Distros compatible on the CLI-basis ?
I have the same mp3 on two different distros, Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.10, both using gnome. The md5sum of the mp3 is identical on both distros, but on Ubuntu the bitrate is 96kbps and on Fedora it is apparently 257kbps. Discovered this using RhythmBox but also appears in Nautilus browser, under the properties tag.
I have another distro on my puter which has packages install on /opt which is on its own partition. i'm wondering how i can pull those packages into fedora.
On my network I have one computer running Fedora 14 and another running Ubuntu 1.0. I need to sync Evolution between these 2. The problem is Evolution folders have different content in the 2 distros. Is there a way to sync e-mails, contacts etc, between these 2 distros?
I have a problem with opensuse grub - it cannot see other distros on my laptop (Ubuntu and Mint) and the original grup got glitchy when I recovered it (I couldnt reinstall it with terminal, so I used rescatux to recover it, but I couldnt update it). It works with windows. Is it some kind of bug or osuse isnt compatible with other distros?opensuse: 11.4 64 bit

I recently bought a new laptop (Clevo W760CU) and I've tried several times running 64 bits distros on it. Both Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 12 live cd's simply won't boot into X. They both seem to freeze at the very ending of the loading process. 32-bit releases of both work fine. Using the alternate install CD I managed to install 9.10 but when I try to boot it freezes immediately after the cursor appears (which I assume is equivalent to where the live cd's freeze). If I try recovery mode I can see the following error:

Where and which program it is varies. I've managed to install Archlinux and Windows 7 fine, both 64-bits. I haven't been able to update Arch yet because it wont't find my network card, as with Fedora 11 and 9.04 both of which install perfectly fine). It seems the kernels released in October or later cause my problems How can I fix this? I really want to be running 9.10 64 bit because I have 4 GB of RAM.
Difficult problem of booting due to the presence of 2SATA hdd (sda,sdb) and 2IDE hdd (sdc,sdd). At the moment I have kubuntu-karmic on sda booting itself and bothe win7 and xp on the same hd. I edited, the custom grub.d file to add Suse and Mandriva installed on sdc and generated a new grub.cfg. Neither the entries grub2 finds by itself nor the ones generated by my files start. No error of sort. I select the entry and nothing happens....it just hangs.I had hoped to have solved the problem of booting as grub legacy installed itself on the wrong disk/partition and never found its stage 2.

I'm in the process of trying several different distro's live before deciding which I want to run a new net book. So I make I live USB. But what happens if I put moe than one distro on the USB? Will I get a menu to chose? or will I have problems?

I came to read that only ubuntu uses GRUB 2.0 and it automatically detects all the distros which should be listed by GRUB 1.0. My question is,

I currently have UNR dual booted with Win7 on my Netbook. I'm thinking about changing to another version of Linux (maybe Cruncheee) by overwriting the UNR partition with a different distribution.
My concern is that doing so will screw up grub. So I just wanted to make sure that if I got rid of the Linux partition I have now, there will still be a boot-loader in place on the computer.
I want to multiboot several Distros for experimental purposes. My main distro is Ubuntu 10.04.Hard drive is partitioned like such: /dev/sda1, grup bios, size = 977 Kib/dev/sda2, file system ext4, size 1.8 Tib, this is mounted on / /dev/sda3 linux swap, 4.3Gib.My question is can I use Gparted to partition a second space out of sda2, and install another Distro? Do I mount it on / ? and will grub boot see both OS without destroying the kernel of my old distro? I am assuming to partition my hard drive I have to unmount it, but can I do this without using a live cd? So many questions and so little help, because apparently this is an easy thing to do.I am just worried just seems that what I just described is too easy and I will probably destroy everything and have to start over.
how to dual boot off of a usb. I am trying to learn to do them manually. What i do know is that i need a GRUB, and a splash screen of chuck norris., 2 ISO's, my usb is 16 GB FAT 32, grubbed up.
A friend of mine is working at a company that's getting a lot of netbooks. None of them have optical drives so USB is important. They are going to switch most of the netbooks from Windows XP to Linux. I told him that both Ubuntu and Ubuntu Netbook Remix can be used this way. He installed both to a USB Drive and what he likes is at bootup it gives the option to either run it from USB as a Live Distribution or to install it to the hard drive.
The installation would give him a way of switching them to Linux and in other cases for users who prefer Windows XP they still have the option of using a USB Flash Drive when they want to use Linux. The question: What other distributions work this way? I have looked at Fedora, CentOS, Mandriva, and OpenSUSE. Would either of these install from USB or even work as a Live Distribution from USB or even do both? Are there other distributions that would do this?
I thought ubuntu was the only distro that requires the 'sudo' command. I could have sworn I just read that OpenSUSE does, too. So who all *requres* it?

I'm looking to install Linux on two of my home computers. Here they are, with a brief description of what they will be used for. Rig #1: main desktop: Dell Dimension, P4 3.0GHz, 2GB Ram, 128MB PCIe Video Card Currently, I have WinXP Pro installed and it is my main workhorse computer.
I would like to have a fairly full featured distro that I can test drive as an alternative to WinXP (which I use mostly for web browsing and mp3s and games... I know I may be out of luck with getting many of my games working on linux, but I can live with that). The only other caveat with this machine is that it has to work using a USB wireless network adapter. The wireless router is nearly inaccessible and too far away to plug into. And there are no wired ports in the house.
Rig #2: old computer: Celeron 850, 512MB Ram, 30GB HD, 64MB AGP Video card My really old computer that has just been sitting around collecting dust. I would like to install a fairly lightweight distro (for obvious reasons) to play around with. Maybe get some experience using linux from an admin perspective, like installing/compiling packages, running servers, etc...

I have an old mini-desktop computer I want to have as a spare machine for internet browsing and checking email. It has a copy of XP currently, but the previous owner didn't put the key in so I can't get onto it at all. I plan on putting linux on it, just not sure what it can handle. It has 384 megs of RAM I believe, and the processor is a via C3, so I'm not even sure if I can run linux on it. I've checked the faqs and googled a bit, but I can't tell if it's i486, i586, or one of those things, and I'm not sure what linux distros(if any) are compatible. Will linux mint be able to run on a 900mhz processor of this sort and 384 megs of RAM? I'm thinking no, but it's the only linux distro I've dabbled with before. If not, will ubuntu? Will opensuse?
