Server :: PPTP Traffic - Gre Traffic Is Being Generated During The Browsing / Reduce Traffic
Sep 27, 2009Recently I notice that when I'm connected to an vpn server (pptpd) and I'm using it as a default gateway my download and upload speed decreases almost to the half of the usual speed. I made a test using iptables in order to count how much GRE packets are generated (except the real traffic itself) in that way:

iptables -I OUTPUT -p gre -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD -s 172.16.10.101 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD -d 172.16.10.101 -j ACCEPT
The first 2 rules match all GRE packets between the pptpd server and client, and the next rules - the traffic between the server and the client.
When I turn the counters to zero and begin to generate traffic (to browse, to download etc.) I see that the GRE packets are even more than these in the FORWARD chain.
So, my question is first of all is my test correct and is it true that so much gre traffic is being generated during the browsing (it becames clear that the traffic is double than if the pptpd wasn't used as a gateway) and if yes - can that traffic be reduced?
Ubuntu Networking :: Unusual High Outgoing Traffic Generated
Aug 12, 2010I've noticed recently that a lot of outgoing internet traffic is generated by my laptop (running Ubuntu 10.04 - 64 bit). This wasn't the case previously. I only found out because my wireless broadband traffic allowance suddenly was used up very quickly. I've installed ntop to try to find out where all this traffic is going to.
I did find that there were a very high number (at one stage over 11.000) of active TCP/UDP sessions (see attached screenshot). Although the traffic generated by each is only small (about 100 bits/bytes - not sure what) multiplied by thousands, makes a fair bit of traffic. I wonder if I've got some kind of a virus/bug or do I have a configuration problem with my laptop?
Software :: Acoustic Simulation Program Or - Sound Wave Simulation Program
Feb 21, 2010I am looking for a very particular sound wave simulation program. To get an understanding of what i want let me describe it to you in a different way.
Imagine your look at a bowl of water from above and you poke the water at a specific frequency you will see wave patterns showing. Well im after a program that can generate that pattern with any particular frequency that i set, and to allow me to place different shapes and objects around the sound source or sources (i may want to use more than one sound source that may or may not be at the same frequency as first.) and see what kind of reflections i get.
I was also wondering if instead of a point sound source you could have an entire shape giving off a specific vibration. This will give very interesting results that i am also after.
There are some programs that show sound simulations that i have described but nothing that can do the requirements that i desire. Do any of you guys know of any programs that can do this? if not how much would it cost to build such a program?

Aug 22, 2009I have an rsync server and am now setting up cwrsync on my windows machine. I want to be able to run cwrsync over ssh with public private keys. I followed a tutorial over here to set this up. It, however, still prompts me for server password and works only if I provide the password. For some reason the public/private key process is not working.
- I generated a key using the command: ssh-keygen -t rsa -N '' (I verified the key gets generated on my Windows machine)
- I uploaded the generated file id_rsa.pub to server /root/.ssh/authorized_keys
I am also prompted for a password if from command prompt I run this command to log into server: ssh -i c:docume~1user.sshid_rsa root@<server_ip_address> On server I have changed the configuration file (/etc/ssh/ssh_config) to say:
RSAAuthentication yes
PubkeyAuthentication yes
I then restarted the sshd service, however, to no avail.

Ubuntu :: Internet Traffic Flow Monitor - Track Traffic Of Each Device
Apr 27, 2010We have something on our network that is reaking havoc with our content filter. I am trying to track it down, but so far I have been unsuccessful. We have approximately 500 devices in 100+ different locations spread across 9 states. Looking at each computer is not really feasible.
I need a machine that can sit in between our network and our internet connection and graphically monitor in real time and logs how much traffic each device is sending and receiving. It would need to sit inline so it has to have two nics and be able to pass traffic. The machine also needs to be transparent. Reconfiguration of our routers or workstations is not an option.
I have used ethereal and wireshark before. Ethereal may be a viable option, but wireshark seems to provide lots of information, but no practical way to make use of it. how to set up the box to be a transparent device on the network that will allow internet bound traffic to flow (freely)?

Mar 15, 2011I wanted to tell my server to block all traffic but US only traffic. So i followed this guide:[URL].. Now I know, it's the best way to help prevent hackers/crackers (doesn't matter to me what they are called. I just have to stop them). My server only deals with US clients anyways so might as well just start right there for my server's security before getting into the brute force and injection preventions. So I got it all done compiled everything moved to the proper directory. I then started to setup my iptables. Like so

Software :: Tora Simulation Does Not Come To An End In Ns2.34?
Mar 13, 2010I have successfully changed and configured TORA in ns-2.34 (in fedora 9), as learnt from;[URL]..Now, when I run the simulation, it hangs and does not finish. If the simulation time is 20 seconds, it do completes but for simulation times more than 20 seconds, it never comes to an end.

Jan 10, 2011I am currently using Cent OS 5.4 and I was able to successfully install ns 2.34 on the machine and run a few test FTP simulations. The problem stems from the fact that the ns 2 installation used in the ATM simulation , in the link provided, uses ns2.1b7 or ns2.1b9.
I have tried to see if I could cheat and implement the patch for my ns2.34 installation but that failed flat out ( make failed with an incorrect parameter error) I then tried to download the older versions of ns that were used in the ATM Simulation, ns 2.1b9 and that failed too ( otcl make failed with g++ error) which i figured failed because I am using g++ version 4.1 . ( From the docuemntation, this particular version of the software had trouble with any g++ version > 3.2)
a) Is anyone aware of any ATM Simulation patch for the current version of ns i.e. ns 2.34?
b) Is there anyway I can confgure the patch for the ns2.1b9/7 version to work smoothly with the ns2.34 version I have installed?
c) What are the recommendations for me to install the ATM Simulation provided on the URL above.

Jun 27, 2011I've been doing Finite Element simulations with the Ansys software for several years now, and recently I have been allowed to use a cluster running on Linux (it's a Sun Grid Engine, or SGE). Since I am quite newbie to this thing, I have read a lot on the internet to get more familiar with the Unix language. I found some example codes which are supposed to launch Ansys and read input files, but it does not work for me. Actually, what I want to do is simple:
1- I need to use Ansys 12.1 in batch mode, with the Academic Research license (which is called "aa_r");
2- The software should then read my input file (which is an APDL command file (in case you are familiar with it..)) and save the database and results in my working directory on the server.
The software is located in the following path:
/ansys_inc/v121/ansys/bin/ansys121
My working directory:
/home/myusername/
From what I've found on the web, I have to write a shell script that calls the software and specifies the details (batch mode, license name, input file, ...). Then I have to call this script by using the command "qsub".
