One system send files to linux machine and it is name contains spaces and I tried to move it from one directory to other, but it show error:
Ex:-
mv -f file one file two
mv: target 'one' is not a directory
How do I access files with spaces from the command line?
for example I want to go to a file called "New File" and let's say is in Downloads/Books/(and here is the file)
how do I input the space since the command line doesn't recognize it?

I have just switched to banshee as my media player and imported my films and music. Problem is, the video list is quite hard to read because all the video files have spaces in their names which are replaced by % signs, numbers and letters. I'm wondering if there is a command I can use in the directory that will automatically remove all the spaces from the filenames or better still, replace the spaces with hyphens or underscores?

I basically want to get rid of the spaces in between temperature and the actual temperature. Is there a command I can pipe the cat output to, to remove the spaces. I have seen suggestions for sed, or tr, but for some reason I cannot get them to work properly.

On a related note, when I was first trying this simply on the command line, I had a file that had a double exclamation point. I found out that that is a shortcut of some kind for the previous command. My kludge to get around this was to try to execute a single exclamation point as a command, then to change the double exclamation point to a quadruple exclamation point. Is there a proper way (escape sequence or something) to pass double exclamation points to a command?
Im using this unix command(in a php file) to remove a certain string and then remove the whitespace left by that string. Unofrtunately in many cases, the files get completely erased. Is there a workaround?

I'm new to Linux (using PCLinuxOS 2009.2), coming from Windows, and I've written myself a little shell script to download files from my camera and then automatically rename them according to a date-and-topic pattern. As you can guess by now, I'm stuck on the bit about renaming. If you want to see my script, here's a copy. I'm not using jhead for this renaming because that only works with JPEG files but I want a single solution for any media format including videos.

how to include my command results in a script? Basically what the script does is it checks the status of a service within the linux server, then sends an email when done. I want to include the results of my status check to my mail when sent.

I normally use the "locate" command to find files that I have on my local drive. However, if I wanted to do this for an external drive, how would I go about this?
From what little I know about Linux, I'm guessing that it creates a reference file from which it performs the search when the command is typed. If I'm right this is updated at a given interval or when "updatedb" is used?
As the external hard drive is not always mounted is it best to create another of these reference files and have a different command (e.g. locateext) or something? Or is it best to add the external hard drive's location to the list of files that get added with updatedb.

Basically I have a dir that contains my makefile and another directory inside this called source this holds main source files. External to these I have a couple of dirs common and drives.
In my make file I use
To include the protoypes from the headers in the folders common and drivers used by source, this works fine. However in common and drivers I use a few variables that are set in the source dir. I set these with externs inside the common and driver files. However I'm sure I should be able to set the directory path for source inside my makefile. So say I have inside source hardware.h with prototypes, I set DINCDIR = -I/Source -I../Drivers -I../CommonFiles
Then from a c file inside my common folder I say #include "hardware.h" the file should be able to see hardware.h and it's protoypes. However I get:
