This forum has given me a lot, and I'd like to contribute back to it. I've just managed to configure, build and install gcc 4.4.2 on Fedora 8. I have an Intel Core 2 duo processor, 64 bit. Given below, are the instructions for installing gcc: It's very crude, because I was typing out the steps while I was trying to build gcc.
I am trying to install a ubuntu server to serve sites. More than one, so Ill use Apache VirtualHost. When installing ubuntu server ask me about installing DNS Server? do i need it?
So how would I go about installing Fedora 12? Does anyone just have a link with a download button and it be simple as that. Or do I have to use a CD or usb??
Kinda like Wubi I can keep Windows 7 and Linux, Is there something like that but with Fedora 12
I need it to install and run CUDA applications (nVidia proprietary GPU API) and I need 4.3.x, but F12 ships with GCC 4.4.x. I thought it would be compat-gcc something, but that installs 3.x.x and I want 4.3.x
Now I know there are loads of tutorials on the net, but I did have my share of tryings and failures and I have to ask for your help now. Please note that I am a complete Fedora novice.I am running a KDE Fedora 13 32 bit. I want to install JRE 6. I have the jre-6u22-i586-rpm.bin file. I checked several tutorials, each different to the other. Some of them point out that running the script file would be enough. Well not in my case.
I run the chmod a+x jre-6u22-i586-rpm.bin ./jre ..... I though this command only changes permission to access files, however I do read on some tutorials that the installation should start upon that command, that "Terms" page should appear to me... well none of this happens. No output at all. So I use the sh command. I do get asked about terms, accept and install. In the tutorial @ oracle, it says that this should be it. Well, not here.java -version just ouputs "Unknown command"I did even manually edit the etcprofile file and added
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_21 pathmunge $JAVA_HOME/jre/bin after
, also JAVA_HOME on a line the export line below.Still no change. Its getting really frustrating, as every tutorail says different, but whatever I do I cannot get JRE running.
I probably missed something as I come from 11.2 but I downloaded a few rpm (like opera and crossover).
upon installing I right click, select install/remove software and up comes KpackageKit telling me its going to install the rpm. Fine I think, then a new window opens showing me the progress and I see it's installing loads of items I previously removed. For example I have de nvidia repo but I did the drivers the hard way, KpackageKit now installs the repo drivers again. I removed pulseaudio and nouveau but KpackageKit installs them again while it install the opera or crossover RPM. None of these packages are dependencies for the 2 RPM I want to install and I can easly remove them via yast.
the only way I can seem to be able to install these 2 RPM's without getting all the stuff back I removed earlier is either manually from the command line or I make a repository of a local directory and use yast that way ?
I checked for setenv but all I got was the location of the manpages. I would need to run JMF mostly when I make animations using Art Of Illusion.I'm running SuSE 11.4
I installed JTR from the respotoies but it cant check sha512, so I went to openwall website downloaded jtr 1.7.5 as they say this will do 512, when i unpacked it I then followed the instructions on website to install [URL]
the unpacked folder jtr 1.7.5 is in downloads so I done as they said Now i cant find where it is installed when I type john in termial not found looked for run folder found it in jtr folder cd to run still john wont start
I made the mistake of eagerly adopting 10.04 as soon as it came out; and while 10.04 itself is running really well (I'm writing to you from it now), my 9.10 install (which, before you ask, I didn't install over!) has gone wrong! I'm a bit of a Ubuntu noob, so I don't know exactly what's gone wrong. All I really know for sure is that it comes up with an error while trying to run up giving me the option (amongst others) to run in 'low graphics mode' - but unfortunately this just brings me to a console, and the other options (I think they're to use a previous working version, or reconfigure) don't seem to work at all.
Is there a way from the command line to just reinstall all the gui bits? Is that going to mess up my install even further? As it stands, I'm stuck at just copying my stuff off my 9.10 partition into 10.04 (which granted, isn't the end of the world).
I am making a pc for the scouts to use as an media pc, i wanted to install windows xp because everyone had to connect their stuff and everyone has to beable to use it.
the problem is this; I got an official windows Xp cd but when i select in the bios to boot from cd it still just starts linux, how do i instal xp?
installing 11.04 on a netbook. I have the .iso but I do not have a spare usb. When I go into startup disk creator it does not allow me to place the iso on a non empty external drive. Is there another way to install 11.04 on the netbook and wipe off windows?
So I decided, mostly out of desire for hipster-cred, to try and install DWM. I now have the entry titled dwm on my session manager before i log-in, but when i select it, i'm just brought to the default Gnome 2.X session.
anyone installed a tiling window manager successfully and want to share their knowledge?
I use an Acer Aspire One netbook for work, with Ubuntu 10.10, and am very happy with it. Unfortunately, I now have to use certain music teaching resources for which I have to have Windows. I have a copy of XP Pro, and want to load it as a dual boot if that is possible. I have searched on Google, but everything seems to relate to loading Ubuntu after XP, rather than vice versa.
I am using Lenovo laptop with Windows 7. As i am preapring for RHCE exam, I need Red Hat linux to be installed.Unfortunately my CD-ROM is not working and I want to install linux using USB Pen drive.

I'm a newbie in this forum and a newbie with administering Linux. I need to install gcc 3.4.6-10 and I've downloaded and installed the rpm, but it seems that it did not do anything.
trying to install Veritas Storage Foundation HA on RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.(64 bit)OS was fresh installed (haven't updated anything yet). I tried to start the VSF installer as stated in the documentations. Change directory to cdrom and where the files are located and typed ". ./installer" It is supposed to launch the installer but instead, the terminal window closed itself. I think I'm missing something here. Don't think it's the media problem. Either I run it from window by double-clicking or run from terminal window, it closes and nothing happens.
I just installed Red Hat 7.1 on a HP computer P4 and it installed except for and exception as it was booting up of: lib/modules/2.4.3-2/kernel/drivers/usb/usb-ohci.0:insmod usb-ohci then it says: "failed" The software went ahead and installed but now I get "localhost login: and no matter what I type in, it will not allow me to put in a password and then says: login incorrect I have never used Red Hat before so I am green at this. I also tried to install Oumbuntu before and got t he same error message when the system was booting up.
I created a bootable USB using iso image of slackware 13.1 (By using Universal USB installer). Now when I run setup, how do I choose the source of installation as USB drive? I suppose that can be done.
I have looked through many forums and blogs but can't seem to find CURRENT information for how to install YUM on centos 5.2 x86
If anyone can direct me to a page or site that has a list of current RPM's needed and possibly some instructions. All the lists Ive come across are for i386, and the ones I have found for x86 .. most of the rpm's end up as 404's
I have a new VPS running centos 5.2 w/ plesk and it did not come with yum.
