Software :: How Is Localhost Tied To A Particular NIC

Aug 12, 2010

I've been involved in the setup of a 3 node cluster that uses multicast to communicate between them. Each of these 3 boxes are pretty much identical, network-wise, with 4 ethernet interfaces. Before configuring the cluster we ran the multicast test utility that came with the application to validate communication. Part of the utility requires you to specify which IP address to go out on. We tested by specifying localhost, which worked for two of them, but a third wasn't able to communicate with either. This was rectified when I specified on the 3rd box that it should use the static IP associated with the active ethernet port. None of the other 3 ports are connected to anything. How does localhost tie to a particular interface? The network config is the same for all three boxes, except for the ip addresses, the route tables appear to be consistent (although I might not be specifying the right command-line arguments to see the necessary information).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Music Player Tied To Places' Folders?

Jan 10, 2011

When i mouse over to places/home, desktop, documents, music, pictures, videos, or downloads my music player (Banshee) opens. I had the same problem with Rhythmbox. Anyone else having this problem? To open one of the aforementioned folders, I go to Places/Computer and navigate from there. That sequence works, no problem. Also, don't know if its related but, tied "file manager" button to Docky and it won't open any of my folders.

Ubuntu :: "Places" Menu Items Tied To Rhythmbox?

Jan 25, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10, and it was doing well as I learned to do the tweaks for internet, etc. However, recently when I click on an item in the "Places" menu, all of the items in the top two "boxes" opened Rhythmbox instead of opening the item listed. I removed Rhythmbox, and now I get the following error message:

Haven't tried to use attachment before so I hope this works. Also, hope someone can give me a clue as to how to change this. I have been tinkering with various Linux distros for some time but decided to get serious about getting one to work for me. This version of Ubuntu seems to be pretty good, but most of the process is still greek to me.

General :: Localhost 403 - How To Set Right Permissions

Jul 11, 2011

My DocumentRoot is set to /var/workspace/www

drwxrwx--- 110 radek www-data 4096 Jul 11 11:34 www

Firstly i had 777 permissions on that folder (and all files inside), but i don't like it, because everyone can see it and change it.

As Apache runs under user www-data:www-data, i tried to set the group and permissions:

sudo chgrp www-data www -R
sudo chmod 770 www -R

After i done that, http://localhost started to show 403 - Forbidden. It just looks like apache is taken as "other" (from owner, group, other) in words of permissions.

What should i change (permissions, owners, whatever) to keep all files visible and changable only for me (user radek) and executable by apache?

As i can see, there's one Apache process running under root and many others under www-data.

radek@me:/$ ps -Af | grep apache
root 13165 1 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start
www-data 13173 13165 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start

Fedora Networking :: Setting Localhost As First Dns?

May 2, 2010

i am trying to use a local DNS service (unbound), and for that, i want each connection (eth0, wlan0) to first use localhost as DNS (127.0.0.1) and then try the DNSs it gets from the DHCP. this is a laptop so it is not just setting it for a single connection but a system default.

i looked and searched and there does not seem to be a straightforward way of doing it. i am usign gnome with networkmanager, and setting the method as "get IP only" is not suitable, as it omits the DHCP-provided DNSs, and also cannot be set as the default method.

OpenSUSE :: Konqueror, Localhost And The Certificates

May 17, 2011

I have the following problem with konqueror. Eveytime when I am trying to enter https://localhost:10000 (this is webmin) or https://localhost:631, konqueror asks me in a popup the following (translated from german):

"The authentification of the server has failed. The certificate does not suite to the server. The certificate has not been signed by a trustable authentification authority"

Then I press "continue". Then the next popup appears asking me: "Do you want to always accept this certificate without any request" And the possible buttons are "always" or "only this session". The problem is that I always press on "always" but obviously konqueror is not remembering this certificate since I have to press all the buttons a hundred times in the ongoing session and every new session. In firefox, I was only asked once and the certificate was stored in list. Does anyone know how to fix this problem in konqueror??

On Windows all you have to do is:open httpd.conf change ServerName 127.0.0.1 for your own IP and it works. On Linux there is is empty httpd.conf, and configuration file apache2.conf doesn't have any address to change. It looks like, that I have to enter my IP somewhere or some of my settings are wrong:first computer (vista) second computer (ubuntu 9.10), cable net providerwhat I did:-activated DMZ, in my router settings and added Host IP Address: 192.168.1.100 -active dhcp (no changes)Windows side:in TCP/IPv4 instead of automatic ip and dns I have entered my own:

Address IP: 192.168.1.103

::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback

(side note: man hosts says that the name is based off the hostname file, but that's clearly not the case here. It's being named off the /etc/hosts file. Why did we move away from /etc/hostname? It's SOO much easier)

These computers (It's more then one) were all installed with the minimal Ubuntu disk and then installed basic software such as xorg, nautilus, gdm, and openoffice.

Ubuntu :: Can't Run MySql Localhost And Apache

Dec 23, 2010

if I should ask this in the server section. But since I use the desktop version of Ubuntu I will ask here. Basically my server is going on pension. Hardware is outdated and all that. Since it's main job was serving me with MySql databases with web interfaces I sommer want to shift all of that over to my desktop and run my databases on the desktop. It's only me that access it so don't see why I can't run it localhost.

My question is. The three main things I need, apache, Mysql and php, are they in the repositories in Synaptec ? If not how hard will the install and config of those three apps be on Ubuntu Desktop? (I've always used Fedora as server with everything build-in so have no experience of installing mysql, apache and php from scratch)
