Software :: Firefox 3.6 Default Mail Application?

Sep 16, 2010

With Firefox 3.5 I have been using this in /usr/lib/firefox/defaults/preferences/myprefs.js to set a default mail client for all users.

Code:

pref('network.protocol-handler.app.mailto','some_application');
pref('network.protocol-handler.expose.mailto',true);
With Firefox 3.6 these settings are ignored.

Anyone know how to make this work in Firefox 3.6? I stress that I need a solution that allows me to set the default for all users. Per-user solutions such as going in to Preferences and selecting a mail client are of no use. Sadly that's the only solution I've been able to find. I need a setting that sets a default for all users and this needs to work even if they already have Firefox profiles. (So modifying the contents of /usr/lib/firefox/defaults/profile is not a solution.) I have some_application set as the default mail application for GNOME.

OpenSUSE :: Firefox, "Get Mail" Extension, Thunderbird, And Default Applications / Clicking "Read Mail" Does Nothing?

Aug 1, 2010

- Firefox 3.6.8 (64 bit)
- Get Mail extension (v3.3.4),
- Thunderbird (3.1.1)

Problem:
Clicking "Read Mail" does nothing, whereas clicking "Compose Message" opens Thunderbird as expected. Thunderbird is properly configured under "System Settings > Default Apps > Email Client".

Whereas, switching the default email client back to Kmail results in the Get Mail "read mail" and "compose message" functions properly opening Kmail in both instances.

This problem occurred for me before (when using openSUSE v11.1 and earlier versions of the apps), but I don't recall how I eventually solved it, or whether it was resolved via an update of one of the above apps/extensions. Nonetheless, I'm now confronted by the very same problem again.

Debian :: Is It True Mail Will Be Stored In / Var / Mail By Default?

Jul 12, 2011

I've installed Postfix and have the server running. On installation, it asked me which domain the service will be for. I entered "test.com". The service will be used for multiple domains. Can Postfix service multiple domains? If so, how can it be done? How does one create a user account? I have read the user account is a UNIX user account. My UNIX user name is "n", so would that mean my e-mail would be "n@test.com"?Is it true mail will be stored in /var/mail by default?I read on Wikipedia that Postfix does not support IMAP, so how does one access mail remotely, or even locally?

General :: Change Default Application For A PDF?

Jun 22, 2010

I'm running Redhat 5 Enterprise (Nautilus 2.16.2) with Gnome and am having trouble changing the default application for PDFs. No matter what I do, it seems to always come up as evince.

First I tried browsing to a PDF file using Nautilus, right clicking on a PDF file, selecting properties, open with, and then changing the radio button. However, the radio button is selecting "Document Viewer" and clicking on the other buttons doesn't do anything. The button is stuck on "Document Viewer" (I'd like to use Adobe Acrobat).

I thought I'd do it manually then. Running `gnomevfs-info file.pdf" shows code...

So now xdg-mime and gnomevfs-info are showing different default applications for this file type. I've tried updating the mime database using update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime as well as updating my desktop database using update-desktop-database ~/.local/share but nothing seems to be working.

Changing a default application really shouldn't be this difficult. What should I try next to change my default application?

, however, shows something different

My .local/share/applications/defaults.list file, however, shows the following:

application/pdf=AdobeReader.desktop

Server :: Dovecot IMAP And Subfolders - Mac's Mail Application And Thunderbird - Both Come Up With Error

Mar 18, 2010

I'm running Dovecot version dovecot-1.0.7 on CentOS 5.4. I'm trying to create subfolders and I can't. I've tried Mac's mail application and Thunderbird; they both come up with an error, basically saying that the server doesn't support level one folders(subfolders). Squirrelmail can't create subfolders neither. I did some reading and thought that perhaps the problem lies in the /etc/dovecot.conf file; specifically with the "mail_location" directive. I currently don't have that directive active which means Dovecot uses defaults settings: saving users' mail in the %u/mail folder. Is there any way to configure Dovecot to use subfolders?

Ubuntu :: Using A Terminal Application (CLI) As Default In Xubuntu

Jul 8, 2011

I do a lot of torrenting on my xubuntu box, and ever since my introduction to computers, I have become attracted to the command-line way of doing things. My default editor is vi, my default torrent programme is rtorrent, my default gopher client is lynx... you get the idea. My web browsing, and sometimes also my file browsing, however, is always in graphical mode.

As you know, downloading a torrent involves downloading a small file with the extension .torrent. When I clicked on this .torrent file, although I have rtorrent installed, Transmission showed up. Not to insult the Transmission guys, but compared to an ncurses-based torrent client, Transmission is just too bloated. Anyhow, I right-clicked on the file, Open With Other Application, etc.

Into the box that showed up, I typed /usr/bin/rtorrent (the path to my favourite torrent client), and clicked OK. I double-clicked on the torrent file again, and nothing. Transmission didn't show up, but neither did my terminal client. I'm sick of having to go to the Applications menu and firing up the Terminal to torrent a file. I'd like to have the Terminal open up with rtorrent as soon as I double click the file.

Debian :: Set Default Application For Specific File Extensions

Dec 17, 2015

How to properly set some entries in:

$HOME/.config/mimeapps.list

so that:
*.odb files are opened by default with libreoffice base
*.org files (just org files not plain text files) are opened by default with emacs

For some reason I can not figure out how to proceed.

As far as I know - i.e. for what I have been reading in the documentation - the default application for a given MIME-type is specified by writing into the group [Default Applications] in the mimeapps.list file

My configuration is the following:

- 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u6 (2015-11-09) x86_64 GNU/Linux
- gnome desktop

Debian :: Make Java Default Application To Open JAR Files

Feb 4, 2016

i cannot seem to find a proper way to make Java my default application to open .jar files. I just made a new Debian 8.3 install on my laptop HP Pavilion G6 and the default application for opening .jar files is the Archive Manager. But when i go to "Open with.." section on right-clicking the .jar file, i get no JRE or JDK option to choose. I just installed the openjdk 7. I can manually run them from the bash, but it would be much more convenient if i just double-clicked it. Here is what i get when i run several commands in the bash :

1) which java ->Code: Select all /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/bin/java
2) java -version -> Code: Select alljava version "1.7.0_95"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.6.4) (7u95-2.6.4-1~deb8u1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.95-b01, mixed mode)

General :: Executing The Default Application Assigned To A File Type?

Using gnome terminal (Ubuntu 10.10), is there a way to execute the default application associated to a file type, only by typing its name, as it is possible with Windows ?

For example, say I create a mime type associated to every file with the pattern *.abc. Lets say I associate this file type to application 'my_app'.

If I have file 'my_file.abc' in current folder, what I want is that when I enter only 'my_file.abc' at the prompt, it executes 'my_app' feeding it with 'my_file.abc' as first argument. (assuming of course 'my_app' is in the path)
