OpenSUSE :: Can't Write Grub In MBR

Apr 20, 2010

I am trying to install grub in MBR. I have working configuration on my root partion. I tried "grub-install" on MBR but gives me some warning.

Code:
/usr/sbin/grub-install /dev/sda

WARNING! You are trying to invoke the unsupported grub-install script with a parameter. To really do this, call grub-install.unsupported. You should rather call "yast2 bootloader" or create configuration files appropriate for the intended target. Also I tried it from Yast but still MBR has Chamelon boot loader.(I have chamelon boot loader, I want to overwrite my MBR with current grub configuration on my root partition.)

I tried using grub-install.unsupported but it did not work either. it says: /dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.

I tried grub-editor (kde module) to do the work, but it gives me error: grub-install returned and unknown error exit code 1.

General :: How To Write Grub On Another HD

Feb 5, 2010

I have XP on the boot HD, Ubuntu 8.04 on the other HD, and grub on the MBR of the Windows side. Then the Windows HD went bad and I need to get grub onto the other side so I can change the boot sequence to what was the second HD (the Linux one) and abandon the Windows side. Booting from a live CD is no problem, but I can't figure how to install grub onto the Linux side, which has been partitioned. I know where menu.lst is, and have backups of it as well.

Is this something that needs supergrub, or can a simple write to the proper place be done in a terminal window?

If switching the boot sequence is not enough (don't see why it shouldn't be) then I can also switch the jumper configurations on the two hard disks. But I don't think that should be necessary.

Slackware :: All The Words Are Underlined When Write In Spanish

Aug 16, 2010

kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU (slackware 12.0). KDE 3.5.7.

Suppose I enter a forum where everyone writes in Spanish. When I want to post, the editor, as I type the words, underlines them in red, as if I were misspelling the words. But, if I write an English word, he doesn't underline it. Obviously, he is thinking I'm writing in English.

I suppose the editor is in my system. That is, it is not an editor sent to my machine by the site. Hence, I must have the means of telling him not to care about spelling.

Slackware :: Can't Write To NTFS USB Drive In KDE4.6

I installed AlienBob's KDE 4.6.2 a few days ago to give it a shot.

I'm really satisfied with it and wish to keep it, but there's one thing bugging me : I can't write to my NTFS USB drives.

To be precise, I can write as much as I want to existing files, but I can't add nor delete files nor directories.

Worse, root isn't allowed either, even in runlevel 1 when mounted by hand (mount -t ntfs /dev/sde1 /mnt/foo).

Did I miss something to configure among the dependencies of KDE 4.6 ?

Slackware :: Write Script For Crontab Hdd Operation?

Dec 28, 2010

I have this Maxtor USB external HDD which I mount via dolphin-hal when needed. This HDD has a built in feature to 'sleep' if not used for some time, say 20 min. Now I don't want it to sleep because it irritates me to wait everytime for it to be active for use, so I figured crontab job should fulfill my requirement.

*Edit: I think a script needs to be executed every 15 minutes. The script has to do the following(I think):

Check to see if HDD is conected via USB:
If YES then - Do the below things
If NO - Do nothing

"Below Things":

Check if the ext4 fs is mounted on media/Maxtor-C; if yes then check if any file operation is being performed; if yes-do nothing, if no then write and remove an empty file. if hdd is connected but not mounted then hdparm -z /dev/sdxx (read partitions)

Slackware :: Write A Script To Switch Between Different Network Configuration?

May 8, 2010

I am running Slackware 12.2.
I have checked the file like /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf, and the command 'ip' or 'ifconfig', but still can not figure out how to write a script to switch between two network configurations easily.

Suppose that one configuration uses DHCP server to dynamically give the ip address, and uses a Default Gateway 1.1.1.1, a net mask 1.0.0.0, a DNS server 1.1.1.0;
and in another configuration the Ip address is fixed, and use a Default Gateway 2.2.2.2, a net mask 2.0.0.0, a DNS server 2.2.2.0;
Anyone would like to give me a hint on how to write one (or two separate) script(s) to switch between these two settings?

Debian Installation :: Cannot Write Grub To Boot Location - Fatal Error

Jun 10, 2011

No explanation other than it can't write to the specified location. I double checked all the partition settings which were the same as the tutorial then skipped the GRUB installation and finished. The only thing I can think of that might be wrong is that the 250MB partition size specified for /boot in the tutorial is too small.

I tried both, standard and alternate installer (9.10 / 64 bit), and both failed at that point. Not a really error message, it just says "cannot write GRUB boot loader".

I also tried two different scenarios:
- Ubuntu beside Windows (shrinked the partition for that)
- Ubuntu on the empty RAID

Slackware :: Optical Drive Not Identified - Get Permission To Read / Write In The Device

Aug 6, 2010

On one of my machines the DVD/DVDRW/CDROM drive appears as /dev/hdc and is not identified as an optical drive by HAL. It is owned by root: disk and thus no users get permission to read/write in the device (not even those in the cdrom group). This stops playing DVDs, ripping CDs, no notifications appear when a disk is inserted, etc. etc. When I set the permissions for all to read/write from the device then users can access but still no notifications are shown.

On all my other machines the optical drive is identified as /dev/sr0 and is owned by root:cdrom . All have Slack 13.1 . Previously with Slack 12.2 this machine still had the drive in /dev/hdc but the permissions were right (I think because I added it to /etc/fstab with options for users to access it). I believe the problem is down to HAL not setting this drive to the correct group, but how do I fix it? I hate HAL, it has a mind of its own, just like in the scifi movie

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Debian - Write /dev/sda1 To The Bootloader Rather Than /dev/hda1 Using Grub-mkconfig?

Aug 19, 2010

I installed Debian on my PC and then installed Ubuntu. This worked fine and I could dual boot between the two. The PATA disk was /dev/hda on debian and (I think) /dev/sda on Ubuntu. I copied the entire disk to a sata disk using dd from knoppix and put the PATA one to one side. Now the Ubuntu comes up fine but when I boot debian, it complains about references to /dev/hda1, which is present in grub - root=/dev/hda1. Debian now expects sda references rather than hda references. How do I persuade Ubuntu to write /dev/sda1 to the bootloader rather than /dev/hda1 using grub-mkconfig?

Slackware :: Dual Boot Slackware With CentOS Using CentOS GRUB

Apr 11, 2011

For various reasons, I have to learn my way around CentOS. I have an old computer (P3) with Slackware on it. I threw in a second HDD that I had lying around and installed CentOS to it. I was figuring that I'd just decline installing GRUB or point GRUB to Slackware as the second OS and end up with dual boot.

The CentOS install, though, blew right past that part with offering me any options. It put a small boot partition on the CentOS drive and now the box boots straight into CentOS.

I've spent the better part of the day trying to get GRUB to boot the Slackware drive and had no luck, though I've learned a lot about GRUB error messages.

By the way, CentOS uses GRUB v 0.97.

Question: someone could point me to a reference.

Here's the output of fdisk -l on that computer (/dev/sda is a 4GB SCSI disk that was originally the boot disk for Windows 2000 server on that computer):

Code:

Here's the currentGRUB file. I added the section about Slackware. I've also tried pointing it at:

I've also tried:

Slackware's LILO:

It's been six months or more since I used this computer. It's my experiment-er "play" computer and I had taken the HDD out to test a computer for one of the members of my LUG, so I can't remember exactly how I configured the LILO install, but, if I did what I usually do, I installed it to the MBR of /dev/hda. I have considered just blowing away LILO, but I'd be happier if I could just use GRUB to call LILO.

I'm setting up a dual-boot for a friend with Ubuntu Studio and Slackware 13.1. Slackware will be the primary OS and Lilo will control the bootloader.
