Slackware :: Can't Find Cdrom On 13.1?
Oct 19, 2010
music players can't find the cd player on slackware 13.1.system still works with 13.0. With 13.1 I can boot off the CD.tried mounting a data cd with (as root) mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom and replacing sr0 with anything I could think of but kept getting message that the device did not exist.

I tried to mount my CD Rom drive and got this response: "mount: can't find cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"
I did see the CD Rom drive briefly after I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 but I couldn't access the drive and when I logged back in.

I inserted a disc and tried to access it through Dolphin. It shows up in the directory explorer thing as a disc and with the disc name, but it has a little / thing in the bottom corner of the icon, and when I try to access it, it gives me this long error on the bottom of the file area (can't remember what all it said, something about 'harvey' and being unable to find the directory in /etc/fstab). The same thing happened with an external drive, which seemed to work fine before but now has the same problem.

Now i have 64 bit computer i installed Slackware 23 64 bit on it. i followed Alien Bob's multi lib how to and installed needed libraries one by one. everything is fine expect wine configure script can not find some libraries needed: libgsm, libmpg123, libopenal, libxcomposite.
I have already installed 32 bit compatibility packages and used /etc/profile.d/32bit.sh as recommended in Alien Bob's howto. configure -- does not really list anything for pointing for libraries.

I am trying to buld some stuff that uses boost libraries... so i got this funny message about scons not being able to find this lib...
I am not sure what the correct "rules of engagement" are in this case, but I downloaded the Slackbuild from <current>, edited it for arch, and changed its --build-type from "minimal" to "complete"...
as soon as it finishes the build, I will upgradepkg my_new_boost_SBo.tgz

Here is my example code that doesn't work:
find $HOME -type d -name "$WHATEVER" -exec rm -rfv {} ';'
$HOME works ofcourse. it's $WHATEVER that -name doesn't honor. Has to be a variable. I really don't see a way around it because $WHATEVER could be any number of things depending on the circumstance. I've also tried other things:
find $HOME -type d -name '${WHATEVER}' -exec rm -rfv {} ';'
Using backticks will process $WHATEVER but it tries to execute it as a command instead of processing it as an argument to -name....

Where can I find KDE 4.4.x debug symbols?
My dolphin-fish likes to be out of segment (segmentation fault).
KDE crash handler complains about missing debug(ger) symbols.
Are they added to Slackware? I made full-install.

I just upgraded from 13 to 13.1, everything went smoothly, except for mozilla having issues with the printer list. It's just empty, there isn't even a print to file option there. Removing $HOME/.mozilla did not help. The printer works, as far as I can tell, and is the default: lpr, openoffice, konqueror, gimp all print fine... every program I tried works, except for firefox, thunderbird, and seamonkey. (Printing over LAN works always.)
Edit: I am retarded. Firefox was loading libs from /usr/local/lib. I had a bunch of garbage there... much garbage I needed to make inkscape work. My temp solution was to run export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib64" before calling firefox.I traced it down (I think) to the newer glib I had in /usr/local. I could not build inkscape without it in 13, but apparently I can in 13.1. I removed the local glib and now everything seems to work.

I have the 64 bit 13.0 version installed. I have an hp f4440 all-in-one printer installed and connected via usb. I downloaded and installed the new hplip 3.9.12 after removing the older hplip 3.9.4 version. I used CUPS to install and setup the printer. No problems, I let it search and it found the printer right away. When I ran XSane it could not find the device. I clicked help and it gave some steps. The first being to try as root. I opened a root terminal and entered xsane, it found and opened after a warning about running it as root. I checked and my user name and root are entered in the scan group.

Firefox 4.0b7 is out. I am compiling it now. First though, I had to update cairo and pixman. Cairo was easy enough modifying the slackbuild, but pixman was a peta. I couldn't find a slackbuild, so I had to really modify one. It worked, though, building pixman first, then cairo. The FF build has been going for about 10 minutes, so I know it has a way to go.

I couldn't find the kernel docs that go with 13.1. These docs would be the result of running this in the top-level kernel source dir.
make pdfdocs
make htmldocs
etc.
Are these not packaged? Are these built ever as part of a release or test cycle? Do any other slackers ever build these? I am seeing lots of errors from make pdfdocs "how much attention is given to DocBook on slackware?".

I'm a new user of Slackware Linux.I wan't to learn c# under Linux, so I downloaded Mono 2.8.1 source package. I read the README and downloaded the pkg-config, libgdiplus, glib-2.4.0 and install successfully.
But when I "make install" mono, make told me "[MCS] Can't find gmcs.exe", I don't know why.

Mousepad in xfce seems to have a problem when compiled with the latest libraries. In Slackware Current (13.1 RC1?) the "Find" button stays disabled the SECOND time you try to do a "find". Because of this, you can only do one "find" without closing Mousepad and opening it again.I found a bug report for this problem in a forumr a different distribution:[URL]I have applied this patch to the current xfce source code on my local machine and it seemed to solve the problem. It would be nice if this patch could make its way into the 13.1 release.

Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0
Just after the booting process is finished, running ps I get this:
Code:
As you can see, there are a lot of names beginning with the letter 'k'. Are these processes needed for the GUI to be fully functional when it is run (X Window System + WM + Xfce4)? And can I setup the system such that they're never run?
The reason for this question is that I am testing some programs and need the CPU to have as little time stolen as possible.
