Slackware :: Xfce LUKS Handling Randomly Fails?

Anyone else experiencing the random LUKS fails? Anyone know of a solution?I filed a bugBasically I have a USB hard drive with two LUKS partitions on it (sdb2, sdb3). When plugged in, it asks for the password in Xfce (like it did in Slackware 13.0), but instead of the previous "asks twice for password" bug, now it asks once, but nothing pops up on the desktop. It's rare to see either of them put an icon on the desktop (usually nothing results).
I see /dev/mapper/luks_crypto_{UUID} get populated, so they are successfully being unlocked (LUKS), but no icon appears, and no mount point for the volume label (i.e. /media/BACKUP /media/ASUS) is populated.Does anyone know how I could produce a more useful bug report? I'm wondering if "strace startxfce" would produce anything useful or if I should alias Thunar to "strace -o /tmp/thunar-`date`.txt" would be in order.

I have a luks-encrypted external drive with lvm on top. When I plug it in xfce prompts me (twice as usual) for the encryption phrase. Then, unlike when I have a regular file system on top and it automounts, I need to activate the volumes and manually mount. Is there a way to make these steps happen automatically?

I've just did a fresh Slackware 13.1 install on a 32-bit box for friends of mine. It's an older machine with an AMD Athlon XP 2500. Generally everything works just fine, with one exception, however.Connecting a LUKS encrypted USB harddisk is notified by KDE. Clicking on the device icon in Dolphin opens the dialog asking for the LUKS passphrase. No error message appears, but the file system is not opened and mounted, anyway.However, before another attempt I have to "remove" the device in Dolphin.Output of dmesg:

Fresh guest install of current as of changelog dated 16-Feb-2011, in to VirtualBox 4.0.4 (13.1 x86_64 host).
1. About 6 of the icons normally residing in the top half of Settings Manager are missing (names are their and functions work). Selecting 'Appearance -> Icons' and re-selecting the one choice available restores one, the rest remain MIA.
2. Default xfce Terminal launch fails with error <????> Re-selecting the default 'Preferred Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal -> Xfce Terminal' has no effect. 'Properties' shows the usual 'exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator'.
Setting 'Preferred Applications' to 'X Terminal' launches an xterm successfully as expected.

I recently installed Debian 8.2.0 on an older machine (circa 2008, AMD Athlon Dual Core 5000B Processor, Nvidia nforce MCP61P Chipset, Nvidia Geforce 6150SE nForce 430 onboard video).
The install went smoothly, but occasionally the screen scrambles (see example below)
I have to force restart every time this occurs, and I'm not entirely sure what causes it. It used to only happen if I launched iceweasel too soon after login, but now it happens at any random time (in the middle of doing an image search, or right at the end of a 6 hour work session without any hiccups. I have only found topics on "screen blanking", and similar issues when using brightness controls on laptops, but nothing specifically like this.

I have been following Alien Bob's README_CRYPT.TXT on the install disk and playing around with LUKS and LVM as highlighted in the section Combining LUKS and LVM. I got this working following the examples in the readme however I now wish to add another volume to the volume group. I have got this working and extended the group with an encrypted volume so it's now bigger. I want the two included physical volumes in the volume group (which are both encrypted) to be opened on bootup.
As it is now I am prompted for a password for the first physical volume (the passwords are set to be the same) and that opens and boots the volume. It has a problem with the second PV I have added and doesn't open this. There are errors on boot up about this and pvdisplay give this:

Basic Problem: I have been trying to install 13.1 (64-bit) and have not been able to get lilo to install.
Procedure:
1) partitioned drive /dev/sdc 1GB (Linux RAID) and 499GB (Linux Raid)
2) copied partitioning scheme to /dev/sdd
3) set up RAID-1 arrays md0 (sdc1-sdd1) and md1 (sdc2-sdd2)
4) write random data to partitions
5) set up LUKS on md1 (swluks)
6) set up LVM on swluks (80GB /, 375GB /home, 20GB swap)
7) ran setup, chose partitions, installed software
8) setup lilo (mbr, selected /)
9) TRIED to install lilo

I am trying to get Slackware 12.2 running on a system with two identical harddiscs using RAID-1, LVM and LUKS.

The system is still the same, however, the results of upgrading or installing 12.2 are different. The system refuses to boot. The screen messages during boot seem to suggest, that the RAID system is "seen" by the system, but the encrypted filesystem is not.

this problem began some time ago and I can't quite remember how or why. This computer is somewhat new as my former HDD died and I bought some other stuff along the new HDD and it wasn't until some time later that I noticed the problems which never happened before, I had been using Ubuntu 10.10 both before and after I got the new HDD.For some reason, Ubuntu began giving error messages when I tried to run it, most often it would give them over and over unless I decided to give up and try again several minutes later. The error message was always a lot of weird things from which the only thing I could make out was
"Kernel panich - Not Synching: VF:S unable to mount root fs on unknown-block 0,0" (or something like that)I tried using other kernels but it'd give the same error message, I sometimes even used WinXP, sometimes it'd boot correctly, others it'd reboot.This became really annoying and tried with a clean install, the first few times I logged in seemed to be working fine but this morning I'm having a problem that seems even worse.When I try the now only kernel I have available it just remains unmoving from a blinking cursor screen. Slackware 13 Kernel 2.6.29.6 have three hard drives. Root is on own drive sda1. sdb and sdc are raid via mdadm with two partitions. one for /home raid0 md0 one for swap raid1 md1. md0 is encrypted vi cryptsetup. md1 is encrypted vi fstab. everything boots fine and is accessible. However, /dev/mapper/* shows sda1 as block device connected to the raid md0. swap crypted device is correct in /dev/mapper/*. fstab is set correctly. problem seems to be with initrd. I would like the correct device in /dev/mapper so that I can access drive info; size, available space, etc. now info shows only sda1 info

So I was wondering about the dilemma of how to encrypt the password file on a key card to unlock your harddrive without having to enter any password. I came to the conclusion that that the scripts could do this without storing any passwords in plane text them self. Have a few extra steps to the scripts that would:
1. Read the UUID of any disks coming in.
2. Attempt to use that ID to decrypt a password file stored in the initrd.
3. Use the decrypted password file to unlock the the keycard partition.
4. THEN use the password files on the keycard to decrypt the main partition and boot the system.
However, if somebody stole your key card and didn't know what the unencrypted information was, then it's harmless for them to have it anyway. And if they did know, you wouldn't be any better off with it being encrypted because they probably can gain access to your computer anyway; leaving them to just pop the key card in and automatically decrypt the drive.
I suppose encrypting the keycard would give you extra assurance that the information would be much harder to recover if you destroyed the key card in a hurry. So would this extra security step even be worth it?
I guess the most secure thing would be to only have a password and type it in every time... unless you are concerned about the aliens/government stealing that from your brain which would probably mean they wouldn't need your password anyway.

How can I get a LUKS encrypted partition on an external USB device automounted with r/w access for non-privileged users?
Background:
I just reformatted an external USB device with ext4. The only partition is LUKS encrypted. Now, when I plug the device to my computer, KDE notifies me and asks me to enter the LUKS passphrase. Then it mounts the device. Little snag here: Non-privileged users have read-only access.
My user is a member of group plugdev, but not of group disk, as this was discouraged several times, e. g. by Robby Workman. With non-encrypted disks regular users have read/write access, or can change the filemodes accordingly, as far as I recall (currently I have no more non-encrypted disks left to verify it...)

I have a 160GB harddrive with 2 partitions:
1. /dev/sda1 ext2 100MB (this is my /boot partition)
2. /dev/sda2 LVM2 Remaining space (this is my physical volume and is LUKS-encrypted)
There is 1 volume group, slackvg, and 3 logical volumes:
1. swap 2GB
2. root jfs 10GB
3. home jfs 50GB
I would like to shrink /dev/sda2 to make room for another regular partition, is this possible?

I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

I was over in the Desktop forum yesterday and apparently 'event sounds' are available for Xfce and are part of the original package, but I've never seen them made available, that is, the switch to turn them on isn't where it is suppose to be, in any Slackware specific package of Xfce.I've used 4.61 that came with Slackware64 13.1, 4.61 from the Salix depository, 4.62 from Mr. Workman, 4.62 from 'current' and recently 4.8 from Mr. Workman. None of these make the 'event sounds' available.

I recently logged into my Slackware 13.1 account and when I issued the "startx" command , there was no toolbar at the bottom and I couldn't see my mouse. I was able to click on a short-cut on my desktop , and my mouse came back. I can't open any thing except VirtualBox. When I open it , the top is cut off , so the minimize , maximize and close buttons are cut-off . I really have no idea what to do.P.S. I have XFCE instead of KDE

I am using Jessie with XFCE and I tried to write a service which executes a script to change my wallpaper. When I try to start the service with systemctl start wallpaper.service it fails and I get the outout below from systemctl status wallpaper.service
I don't think it to be a permissions issue, they are -rw- r-- r--
This service is called by a timer that goes off daily. Below is wallpaper.service

Slackware 13.1 XFCE. I've come across a strange problem which i've never had before on Slackware. I decided to set a desktop up for my sister. Being girls as they are she wanted to change the wallpaper. I showed her how, however when the machine is restarted the wallpaper turns back to default. In all my slack machines around here, i just simply right click on the desktop and change it. That makes it persistent throughout boots. I'm obviously missing something.

I installed Slackware 13 (full install) a few days ago and every thing is working well except KDE freezes (I'd say randomly but lately it seems as if it happens after I use a KDE program or component.) and nothing works except the mouse cursor, I have to use the power on/off to reset the computer. After a reboot and fsck checks the partition that was unmounted improperly I log in delete a few bad files (.serverauth.XXXX, socket-speeedy and tmp-speedy) I'm usually able to restart KDE using startx. Googling around I think it may be my on board Intel video, dmesg id's it as the Intel 830M Chipset. BTW, this box ran Mandrake 10.1 for the last 6-7 years without problem, for what's worth.

I'm using version 13.37 for Slackware (not current). I've tried using XFCE and KDE (currently using KDE) and after using it for a while, it will seemingly randomly crash (20 minutes to multiple hours). The only thing that seems to be constant is that I'm always using Kate when it happens.

I'm normally a KDE user but tried xfce4 and found that it works nicely. I wanted to switch to it for a while. I did find one particular problem: When you try and end the session, you can Log Out but can not Restart or Shutdown. If you click on Restart or Shutdown it asks for password Even after entering a valid password, it will not allow the action.
(I tried user and root's passwords.) It says "Please enter your password." After entering the password it says, "Either the password you entered is invalid, or the system administrator disallows shutting down this computer with your user account." (Before you ask; my user is in power group.)
I tinkered with it for a while and decided it must have something to do with KDM and so I switched my default runlevel to 3 and started xfce4 [via startx] and it worked as expected. Next I tried using xdm instead of kdm and YES, it works as expected. I was able to Restart or Shutdown (no asking for password, it just does it.) What is it about KDM that does not allow xfce4 to restart or shutdown?

Again when I was working under Xfce system hangs up. Earlier I had similar problems but under KDE so I blamed KDE for that. I am sure that there is something wrong with an access to external input devices. Some kind of a broken connection. I am using a USB keyboard but the same happened with PS/2 keyboard. Two flashing leds, I guess, indicate that device is no longer supported by the system. The only hope for an access to the system is via external wired connection. The other possibilities, I am thinking of, are hardware problems with PCI-bus or a virus affecting on a hardware level.

I installed almost the complete install. I left off Apache, MySQL and PHP since I wanted to do them myself (which I did and it went fine). I selected KDE as the window manager but now I want to try xfce. When I boot up, I'm left at the command prompt and have to login (probably does that for everybody) then I run startx. That brings up my KDE. Are the xfce components installed and can I use something else to bring up that desktop? Or can I install it and then bring it up at the command after login?
