Slackware :: Updating To Latest Root CA Certificates In 13.37

Jul 17, 2011

After installing Slackware 13.37 I've noticed that while when in the Xwindows environment inside the mozilla firefox I can surf freely I cannot use wget with the same freedom.

I get the following error with wget:
Code:
wget [URL]
--2011-07-17 10:54:58--[URL]
Resolving dropbox.com (dropbox.com)... 199.47.216.179, 199.47.217.179
Connecting to dropbox.com (dropbox.com)|199.47.216.179|:443... connected.

How do I update the machine to use the latest root ca's I have downloaded and manually installed ca-certificates_20110502.tar.gz but it still refuse to work with wget. How can I install the root ca so it will accept ssl when using wget?

Server :: Alternative To SSL Certificates / Make Self-signed Certificates Work On Most Popular Browsers Without Being Flagged?

Aug 24, 2010

I run a web server on Fedora 12, principally using Apache, MySQL, and PHP. I host a variety of sites, one of which is a family website that contains semi-sensitive personal data for several hundred extended family members, who all have access to the database-driven site.

Until now, I have been using a self-signed SSL certificate to encrypt the data as it is read and written back and forth from my database. Family members have simply had to put up with clicking past certificate warnings as they enter the site, as most browsers flag self-signed certificates as bad. It hasn't really been that much of a bother, but I'd love to do it more professionally. I have looked into buying SSL certificates, but it's a site I host for free and would rather find a cheap or free alternative if possible.

So I'm just fishing for ideas to work with. What are some alternatives to using SSL certificates for moderately strong website encryption? So far, I run only one host on the domain, but may eventually need encryption that would support multiple hosts. Or does anybody know a way to make self-signed certificates work on most popular browsers without being flagged as suspicious?

Ubuntu Security :: Suspected Outdated Or Corrupted Root Certificates

Dec 25, 2010

My desktop 10.10 is unable to access SOME https websites from all installed browsers (Firefox, Chrome and Opera). In firefox I get the error message "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.[nameofsite.com]" One suggestion that I encountered was that the Root Certificates were outdated and/or corrupted and needed to be reset.

A Google search came with the suggestion:
Fix the root certificates on your system. Open Your browser and navigate to the following URL. Once at the web page follow the directions to reset your root certificates. [URL]
Unfortunately this website is one of the problem connections. Another PC with a fresh installation of 10.10 does not display these problems.

Slackware :: Kde 4.3 Won't Store / Save Ssl Certificates?

Jan 25, 2010

After the Sun Jan 24 20:22:46 UTC 2010 update in slackware-current (x86), I am unable to store SSL certificates until "Forever" when asked if greeted with an unknown certificate under KDE. No application can save the certificates eg.: konqueror, kmail etc... I am aware that the above mentioned update didn't bring any updated KDE applications/libs, but still, this has stopped working right after this upgrade. The certificates can be accepted, and after doing so everything works as expected. The only annoying thing, is that although I have selected to trust the certificate "Forever", it asks again after an application restart (eg. konqueror, kmail) if I want to trust this cert forever or for the current sessions only. So it seems, that I can not store/save/trust the SSL certificates forever with KDE.

CentOS 5 :: Updating MySQL To The Latest Version?

Feb 4, 2010

I have CentOS 5.4 installed with lighty and MySQL installed via yum. not a problem. The issue become when I'm having problem with the current mysql that I installed via yum which I believe its currently at version 5.1.42-2. So I'd like to upgrade it to the latest available version of mysql. Except I can't figure out whether to download the generic glibc32 version or just get the RHEL5 version or find the mysql enterprise version somewhere. So, not knowing what I'm doing, I downloaded the RHEL5 version since it's closer to CentOS 5.4. Except for whatever reason the mysqli is not installed or configured properly and I'm not sure how to fix it.

Any suggestion? Everything was working nicely when I used yum to install, except the problem with the version of mysql that's offered in the repository. So I'd like to request a suggestion on how to either somehow upgrade mysql using yum and there's a different repository that I didn't know, or perhaps download a proper latest and greatest mysql, install and have it configured so that mysqli work properly.

Ubuntu Installation :: Restricted Modules Not Updating With Latest Kernel Updates Lucid 10.04

May 8, 2010

I have noticed in the recent updates there is a Kernel update 2.6.32-22 but there is no restricted modules included. On my Desktop I have a Nvidia card which I installed the driver using the Hardware Drivers Application. As far as I know these Drivers are ether reinstalled or updated whenever there is a kernel update.

I also have a Laptop with a ATI Radeon card which I did run the updates and ended up (after the reboot) in low graphics mode, after a bit of work I was able to reinstall the drivers and get my desktop back so that's ok now.

I had this problem a few years ago with an old version of Ubuntu, kernel updates but no restricted drivers. The drivers turned up the next day and all was fine. I was just wandering if this is a known issue with Lucid or if anyone else has had this problem, It's been a couple of days since I noticed the Kernel update but still Restricted Modules. Oh I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04

Slackware :: Wireless After Updating To 2.6.32.2

Jan 7, 2010

I'm running Slackware-Current, and after updating to the new kernel I'm having a small problem with my wireless. When I first turn on my computer, it connects to my router no problem. But when I reboot, "Polling for DHCP server on interface eth1" times out. I have to actually shutdown my computer and turn it back on in order for it to connect again. Same thing happens if I boot into Slackware, reboot, and boot into Windows. (But I can reboot in Windows and reconnect just fine) My wireless card uses the broadcom wl driver, and I had to use this patch to get it to compile with kernel 2.6.32.2. I didn't have this problem with kernel 2.6.29.6.

Ubuntu :: Updating Server - Gave Up Waiting For Root Device Error

Feb 8, 2011

I have been trying to update my server from 6.06 server to 10.04 server. My attempts have been complicated by versions later than 6.06 not being able to properly read my CD-ROM. I used the 'do-release-upgrade' mechanism to upgrade to from 6.06 to 8.04 and then to 10.04. 8.04 loaded OK, but 10.04 fails to boot with the surprisingly common "Gave up waiting for root device" error. It stops at the built-in shell prompt. If I exit from the shell, it seems to boot up normally.

I have verified that the boot partition is /dev/sda1 and the UUID for the partition is correct. My system is an older IBM eServer xSeries 350 with quad 700MHz XEON processors and a 36GB SCSI drive. This system properly installed from the 6.06 CD and boots under this version without problems. So I have some questions. Only the first one needs an answer.

1. What do I need to do to get my system to boot properly?
2. Why was this software released with this error?
3. Why wasn't the faulty loader pulled from the release until it was fixed?
4. Is it possible to revert to the 6.06 loader, which works fine?
5. Why doesn't the loader attempt to try something else that should work instead of just giving up?

Slackware :: What's Latest With Madwifi?

Jul 26, 2010

I'm in the process of installing Slackware 13.1 on my old IBM A22m laptop.Since version 12, I've used WPA_supplicant and the Madwifi drive to set up my wireless connection (using a PCMCIA D-Link card). It has worked great all along, up through Slackware 13.However, I've noticed that Alien Bob's Madwifi instructions and repository do not have builds or packages for Madwifi beyond Slackware 12.2.

I think I simply built the drive in 13 by modifying the slackbuild for 12.2.Anyway, what's the latest/best way to set up wireless with an Atheros chipset? Are there Madwifi packages available for Slackware 13.1?

Slackware :: Getting Exception 13 When Use The Latest Qemu-kvm-0.12.3 On 12.2?

Mar 8, 2010

I'm getting exception 13 when trying to use the latest qemu-kvm-0.12.3 on slackware 12.2 w/ stock 2.6.27.7 kernel:

Code:

exception 13 (6b)
rax 0000000000000010 rbx 0000000000008c00 rcx 0000000000006ebe rdx 00000000000c8c00

[code]....

Google says this has something to do with Intel hardware and the way it handles real mode. run it with -no-kvm, but that's not much of a fix really.. so in the mean time I reverted to using qemu-kvm-devel-88 which works well, but is pretty old.

Slackware :: SBo SlackBuilds Fail At Make Install Under Latest

Mar 4, 2010

I'm running a clean install of the latest version of -current64.When I try to run a number of SlackBuilds from SBo, the scripts stop (no error) after the make install step.If I manually run all of the commands after make install, I get a fully functional package, and the program works with no problems. In looking as the logs, I don't see any errors during the configure, make, or make install steps.

I'm having problems with other scripts as well that are not XFCE related, but these are good examples. Another oddity is that the SlackBuild script for thunar-archive-plugin at slacky.eu works.I've never had any problems with these scripts before, and many other scripts still run just fine. I can't track down a common problem here.

Slackware :: Skype Not Working With Latest Util-linux?

I've found that my skype stopped working with recent -current updates ( around beta ... ). It was looking for a libuuid.so.1 library - on checking I found the 64-bit version but no 32-bit version - quite strange as this has been working fine since my original slackware64 13.0 installation. Anyhow, I got the 32-bit util-linux package, did the 32-bit package convert thing and skype is now working:

1. convertpkg-compat32 -i util-linux-ng-2.17.2-i486-1.txz
2. un-archive
3. copy the libuuid lib to /lib and soft-link in /usr/lib

I didn't install the whole compat package as this is not really necessary I think.
