We just had daylight savings change (the clocks went back one hour at 2am). he machine that was on at 2am adjusted it's time on it's own. All the other machines (5 of them) were off at 2am are still on the 'old' time.Wwhat's the best way to ensure I don't have to adjust these manually next time daylight savings change? Maybe "ntpdate -s time.nist.gov &" in rc.local?
View 24 RepliesI recently set up some new cron jobs under Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit (all the latest patches as of Nov. 11th) and just happened to check right after one was supposed to run and it hadn't run yet. Checking the logs I found the previous cron job ran exactly one hour later than it was supposed to. Is there something going on with Ubuntu 10.04, cron, and daylight savings where cron pretends daylight savings never happened or something?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy system was powered down at daylight savings changeover. Like many Linux users, I keep my RTC on local time so that I can still boot XP on the odd occasion. With my older Linux distros, ntpd would correct the system time during the next boot, and the altered system time would be copied to the RTC on shutdown (by hwclock). This no longer seems to happen. During boot, ntpd corrects the system-time, and the users sees the right time, but the corrected time is never copied to the RTC. The issue only becomes a problem if the system is booted without access to any ntp servers - in which case the system time is visible uncorrected.
I was under the impression that the kernel's 11-minute save-RTC mode should preserved any NTP corrected system-time to the RTC. And failing that, a shutdown triggered hwclock --systohc should have also corrected the RTC. How come neither work for openSUSE (11.2)? Another issue is that having initially booted without an internet connection, ntpd refuses to re-resolve the the ntp servers and has to be manually restarted. Shouldn't ntpd have a roadwarrior option to retry resolving hosts? - this would save having to manually kick it via the command line or cron.
I seem to have run into the bug where my system was suspended when the DST change occurred (Not off so it didn't do it on reboot, not on so it couldn't do it then). I can't seem to find any way to do it manually. Is there any?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems trying to turn on the power saving on my intel 3945ABG wireless chip with the iwl3945 module. if i remember correctly, i used to be able to have the power levels adjusted before with previous releases / kernel (i started caring about power savings back again after getting a new battery).
keying 'iwconfig wlan0 power on' returns Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2C): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
And 'iwpriv wlan0 power' returns wlan0 no private ioctls
Is there something i'm missing or does the chip/module doesnt support power saving features?
I need to define date.timezone in PHP for an application and I can't seem to figure out how to get Apache (or whatever) to use changes in /etc/httpd/php.ini. For example, I need to set the value of date.timezone to America/Detroit and the latitude and longitude values. I'm assuming that simply stopping and restarting HTTPD ought to make that happen (it doesn't) or rebooting the system should (nope). I must have missed something somewhere.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem getting my Slackware 13.0 to accept a timezone cmos setting change. My cmos was set to local time and my Slackware was displaying the correct time as EST. Cmos was set localtime to be compatible with dual booting Windows I have now removed Windows and replace it with Ubuntu. Now, Ubuntu wants the hardware clock to be UTC, which is the norm for unicis. SO, lets make Slackware treat the hardware clock as UTC.
I go to /etc/hardwareclock make these changes.

I reboot setting cmos to UTC, but now when I come up Slackware displays UTC and calls it EST. I go to the date/time app under the system xfce menu, but all it says it is set to UTC (EST) and change from the list below. The list below only has UTC listed. So, now how do I get it subtract the necessary five hours?

After having some problems with iptables not picking up automatically (without restart) the transition from winter time to summer time, and on advice from the iptables/netfilter mailing list, I've decided recently to go down the Unix way and set my hardware clock time to UTC/GMT instead of local time. I am, however, having some difficulty reconfiguring my entire machine to cope with this change.
1. I've used /usr/sbin/timeconfig - which took care of system wide timezone. After that, if I opened a terminal, du "su root" - and then check the date - it looks good. Doesn't affect though the logged in (non-root) user. Running "date" in bash window for logged (non-root) user returns wrong time (UTC) instead of local time.
2. I've added an export statement in ~/.bashrc, to set the timezone for the user account I use. That fixes the time for the logged in user, but only in the terminal. The time in fluxbox/X is still the UTC time.
Where is XOrg taking it's timezone for the logged in user? Do I amend/add to XOrg.conf? At the moment there is nothing about time zone in Xorg.conf (only contains few tweaked settings I've added to it - as I believe most of the rest is autoconfigured). I've searched - but couldn't find how Slackware configures timezones for individual users - aside from the timeconfig utility used during setup.

I am running a version of Ubuntu 10.4 with XFCE loaded (actually Qimo, a distribution for kids). I am using a pci wireless card with a broadcom 43XX chipset and WPA2 authentication using the Broadcom STA driver. In an account with privileges I set the auto eth1 (which is what my wireless card comes up as) to connect automatically, and make available to other users.
When I switch to the kid's account, the wireless connects just fine. Then, if the computer is not used for a period of time, the powersavings mode kicks in. When the computer is woken up, the wireless connection does not attempt to reconnect. If you right click on the networking icon it doesn't even show any available connections, even though it can be found by clicking edit connections. The only way I can get it to reconnect is to restart the machine (I will admit that I did not try to restart the networking service, I will try that tonight).
Any ideas? This has been driving me nuts for a few days now. The users during the day are non technical and can't deal with these kind of issues. I can post more details about the setup (as recommended by the sticky post) tonight. I am at work at the moment and can't get to the machine from here - because it has removed itself from the network again.
how to lock the CPU frequency under Fedora 15. I try to run cpufreq comand but the terminal tells me the comand is bad and ask me if I want to install the program. When I click yes. It says the program has already been installed. While I try to use software manager under GUI, same thing happend. Software manager clearly tells me I have not install that program. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running OpenSuSE 11.3, upgraded from 11.1, with the Nvidia video driver. The font size for Yast, Firefox, and several other things is too small. I've tried changing it using the Appearance section of Personal Settings. That changes the font size in some contexts such as the window titles and task manager, but not in all contexts. In Firefox I've tried something similar, but it doesn't affect the font used in the tabs, function bar on the top, etc. The font in those parts of Firefox is the same as the one in Yast. So there's some other font setting around, but I haven't been able to find it. I've tried Google and SDB, but have no success searching there.

I have tried each of the screens listed on the disk but still can't get it to fit all of the screen on browser. This was not an issue until Xfce's Orage calendar was used when its display of Sunday as the first day of the week was offputting for someone used to Monday. I wrote this script for bash & perl. If you run it in bash it should work. It changes title - (uuid) kernel - initrd ... to title - uuid UUID=the_uuid... kernel - initrd .... When I wrote it I replaced end of lines by . It's the second $block definition. But now I need to repair it, because I will work with the 1st $block definition. That is not to exclude end of lines, but leave it be untouched. Now when you escape the second $block definition, the code does not work. What I have to do to repair it working with multiline input data?

I cannot seem to get e2guardian to work. I went into Ice Weasel to adjust the proxy connections but that just blocks off all internet activity. The problem seems to be with the configuration settings in the browser. I tried Privoxy with a completely new Debian install and have the same problem.

I have a task: install some software package. I have wrote SlackBuild which builds package. doinst.sh does some configuration actions. The second task of doinst.sh - to make software start automatically during system bootup(have ready /etc/rc.d/rc.mysoft script). A good place start it is /etc/rc.d/rc.local (and shutdown in /etc/rc.d/rc.local_shutdown).
Question: how to do it? How in bash/sh script correctly patch rc.local and rc.local_shutdown ? And how correctly unpatch it? I can do it manually, but I interested in automatic mechanism. The task is complicated by fact I'm going to install more than one of such (independent)packages, and start/stop sequences must be in strict order(i.e start A, then B, then C, then D, and this order should be strict independently of package installtion order).
I have a dell studio hybrid PC which I am hooking up to my TCL brand 40" LCD TV to use as a media center pc. The problem I am having is that I can't get the TV's native 1920x1080 resolution to display properly. The rendered desktop doesn't quite fit in the screen (I think its the top and bottom edges that are cut off) so for example the menu bar at the top is completely off the screen.
1680x1050 works fine in the sense that it fits the full desktop to the screen size, but its not the native res. In the resolution changer utility, it recognizes that my TV is a TCL brand but mentions 36 in the model name (the TV I have has 40 in the model name to denote 40") so I think Ubuntu is recognizing the wrong size TV. How can I finagle the screen settings to make the 1920x1080 fit properly on my monitor? Or get Ubuntu to correctly recognize my TV? My TV is a no-name brand so its hard to find info on it or others setting up linux with it.

I want to use the Internet with confidence, so I have setup an old computer with SSH and I'll be tunneling to that (from a netbook).I haven't remote-managed a computer for such a long time and I want to be sure that even if I do a mistake remotely, I can bring the computer back to a good known state.The home computer will reside inside my aunt's house and she knows very few about computers.
I've been thinking about burning a bootable DVD containing a tarball of a freshly configured Slackware. If I mess up, I can phone my aunt and tell her to simply put the DVD inside the drive and press ctrl-alt-del. The DVD boots, un-tars (the fresh Slackware), ejects the CD-tray, waits for her to press Enter, closes the tray, and finaly reboots to my good old known fresh Slackware.

Everything worked fine. My computer was working too, but my internet wasn't. Since it works on the original kernel, I know that maybe it's something I was supposed to install as part of "make [variable]config" The network icon is there, but it doesn't connect automatically as 2.6.39.3 does if that helps as a part of the description.
It i plug the pendrive or insert cd to cdrom it will be automatically mounted. How would i do this?
I don't want to mount these manually from terminal.
