Slackware :: LVM/CRYPTSETUP Duplicate Devices In /dev/mapper Again?
Jan 23, 2011
We had this problem a while back but it went away with whatever updates lvm/cryptsetup have been through, but it's back again as of the latest update. Instead of symlinks to the /dev/dm-* devices, lvm and cryptsetup are both creating duplicate device nodes under /dev/mapper for already existing devices.
e.g.
Code:
gazl@slack:~$ ls -l /dev/mapper
total 0
crw------- 1 root root 10, 61 Jan 23 16:48 control
brw-rw-r-- 1 root disk 253, 0 Jan 23 16:48 lukssda5
brw-rw-r-- 1 root disk 253, 9 Jan 23 16:48 rootvg-lvhome

Slackware 13 Kernel 2.6.29.6 have three hard drives. Root is on own drive sda1. sdb and sdc are raid via mdadm with two partitions. one for /home raid0 md0 one for swap raid1 md1. md0 is encrypted vi cryptsetup. md1 is encrypted vi fstab. everything boots fine and is accessible. However, /dev/mapper/* shows sda1 as block device connected to the raid md0. swap crypted device is correct in /dev/mapper/*. fstab is set correctly. problem seems to be with initrd. I would like the correct device in /dev/mapper so that I can access drive info; size, available space, etc. now info shows only sda1 info

I've encrypted the /home partition. I've been successful in doing this by following the instructions here:slackware64-current/README_CRYPT.TXTBut after upgrade to cryptsetup-1.2.0-x86_64, when I boot up I get 'no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/mapper/crypthome'I have to manually type 'cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda9 crypthome' and mount each time to get into the encrypted partition.I expect to be prompted for the password on boot but I just get that error, what is wrong?my config files:
/etc/crypttab:
crypthome /dev/sda9
/etc/fstab:

Well as you can see from my sig I am running Slack 13 and unfortunately did not discover the readme_crypt.txt on the installation cd until it was far too late. Not to worry, many hours burned and things learned. So I compiled and installed cryptsetup and for my test encryption I am using an external usb harddrive (sdb3).First off cryptsetup kept segfaulting with the luksFormat command and this seems to be a know bug. The workaround it to pass USE="dynamic" to config before you build the package. Then
Code:
# cryptsetup.dynamic -h sha512 --verify-passphrase luksFormat /dev/sdb3 test-crypt
# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb3
[code]....

i booted up this morning and got a surprise. when i plug in a usb drive normally, it pops up in the k message box, and i can choose too mount it. then it mounts no problem.
when i turned on the computer today, however, i plugged in my usb drive, and clicked to mount it, and lo and behold, i got a strange message:
'Could not mount the following device: USB 8GB'
when i choose more information, i get this:
Code:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.12" (uid=8691 pid=2415 comm="kdeinit4: plasma-desktop [kdeinit]) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=1887 comm="/usr/sbin/hald))
im not entirely sure what this means. i can mount the drive manually through the terminal if it's running as root, but thats not a particularly practical way to do things, as i am a student and often have to switch USB drives and ipods many times a day.

I have some problems accessing NTFS USB devices from Dolphin. If I mount by hand the device, mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 /media/disk I can access to the disk from Dolphin. mount command reports: /dev/sdc1 on /media/disk type fuseblk (rw,allow_other,blksize=512)When the same disk is mounted through Dolphin (by clickin on the disk icon), I cannot see any content. mount command reports: /dev/sdc1 on /media/FLS-U2-300 type fuseblk suid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=512,default_permissions)root@obelix:~# As you can see, mount command reports different configurations. I suspect the extra parameters used by Dolphine causing problems but I don't know how to configure KDE to change the mount options. This problem is new to Slackware 13.1. My previous 13.0 configuration had not that problem

When I plug in a USB GPS device, using cypress_m8 module, is creates /dev/ttyUSB0 with read/write permissions for owner, root, and group, dialout. My question is really just where are the rules for setting these permissions and how exactly are the owner and group names set when /dev/ttyUSB0 is created, i.e. a serial USB device is plugged in.

I setup a luks encrypted /home partition on my Debian jessie, with an automount when my usb key containing the luks secret is plugged in at startup.
I did configure /etc/fstab so that my usb key be mounted at startup to /media/usb1, and /etc/crypttab to open my encrypted partition with the key at /media/usb1/homekey. It works.
However, when my usb key is not plugged in, boot fails and never shows welcome screen. I would change this behaviour so that when my usb is missing, boot resumes and do not mount /home partition. How could I manage this?

When I installed slackare 13 it detected usb drives and cameras automaticallyow it doesn't. I am runnning a 13.0 system, not current, so I have only applied the updates in that branch (iirc including a new kernel).nowadays when i plug a device in it does not seem to be detected by HAL (i.e not in KDE).However the device is listed if you use the command "lsusb" and the computer obviously knows it has been plugged in as there is a relevant entry in dmesg.Sorry for the generallised nature of the post, but I don't really know anything about HAL or how it can have stopped working

On my desktop computer (now running the very impressive Slackware64 13.37 and generic kernel), I've got what Alsa considers 4 different sound devices:
Logitech USB headset
Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 with built-in microphone
ATI HD48x0 audio (which uses the HDA-Intel driver) on my graphics card
Intel 82801JI audio (also using HDA-Intel driver) on my motherboard
When I run alsaconf, it picks up the ATI audio only (which is fine). Later running alsamixer (or any other mixer) all 4 are visible. The issue is that I really would like the ATI audo to be in position 0. Previous to Slackware 13.37, setting up the device positions in /etc/modprobe.d/sound usually did the trick. However, that is now being ignored and one the USB devices are being put in position 0 regardless of what is in sound.conf. This is driving me nuts as a lot of software simply use the default audio device, which I would like to be my speakers, but is now my USB headset.
All of the googling I've done points towards messing with the /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf file, but as I said, that is being ignored. Is there a more 13.37 way to have ALSA order the audio devices the way I want?

Last week google introduced the capability of using gmail to call other people in Canada or the US on landlines or mobile devices. This capability is free for 2010.
I gave this a try in Slackware 13.1 and it works. To do this I was browsing with Fire Fox 3.6.8 and logged into my gmail account. On the left hand side of your e-mail account window you will see a phone icon.
1. When you click on that icon you will be prompted to install the gmail phone application.
2. A download window will open asking you to download a .deb source. I downloaded it and then I used src2pkg to create a Slackware package, then installed it.
3. Re-launch Fire Fox.
4. Click on the phone application and call up people. The voice quality is quite good, I experienced little lag.

i work in consumer electronics, and due to company constraints on network usage, i came up with a "jail box" to test blu-ray players, TV's etc that can connect to the internet. the majority of the complaints the server addresses are mailnly "blu-ray player can't connect to the internet", etc... right now it's set up only to return pings that the devices do to test connectivity (i.e. entries in the etc/hosts file for www.samsung.com, www.lge.com, etc.).
i want to have the box actually provide DNS, samba shares, possibly a "pseudo-you-tube" link to test other functions, but the first one i want to tackle is to have the box providing actual DNS services (even though all DNS queries will after all point to the same ip address) the samba shares i know isn't a big headache, i already have it providing virtual web pages (but with no content as yet), the "virtual you-tube" page i'll tackle later. so how would i go about setting up BIND to do this? keep in mind this is a standalone box, not connected to anything but the device under test.

I have 10 hotswappable SATA drives I use for a rotating backup system. On each drive I have created an encrypted LUKS partition. I normally mount the drive by first unlocking it via:
Code:
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdc1: BD-4-B
However some time last week this command refused to work...for any of the drive. Before I even get prompted for a password I get the terse error message: "Command failed: Can not access device"I can't recall if it was a system update that broke it, but now I can't get to any of the data on these devices nor can I run any backups.

I just implemented dracut on my Slack. It works well, but for this also I had to rebuild the kernel. Everything works as it should beside KDM. When KDM start mouse/keyboard don't work. I check the logs and I don't actually see any errors.Note: Im using Slack in VirtualBox with fbdev or vesa driver and it doesn't work with neither of the drivers. I suppose its something missing in the kernel, but don't know what. Before rebuilding the kernel and implementing dracut, everything work with fbdev and/or vesa

Booting up this morning, no problem. But I accidentally let my laptop go into suspend mode, which doesn't work, so I had to force a restart (Suspend mode on my laptop won't allow me to wake it up again). Now, on rebooting, X doesn't work. I usually boot to RL3 then use startx. Now it just flashes the screen then gives me this error -
Code:
(EE) Error compiling keymap (server-0)
(EE) XKB: Couldn't compile keymap
XKB: Failed to compile keymap
Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect setup of xkeyboard-config.
Fatal server error:
Failed to activate core devices .....
Fatal server error:
Failed to activate core devices.
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at [URL] for help. Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. If I su - to root and then do "init 4", I get to xdm, and I can log in. X then starts, but with no sound, wrong keymaps, launchers not working; all sorts of things wrong. If I startx as root I get a normal desktop. I have tried copying root's xinitrc to /home/spoovy, but makes no difference.

I have encountered a bug in the live-build in Debian Live. The persistence does not work it is because of the bug #767195. I cannot recreate another live img file because of bandwidth problem, is there any way to repack the initrd and enable the cryptsetup?
as per suggested:
#767195 – cryptsetup needs to be enabled for initramfs inclusion – Debian Bug report logs

I have 3 accounts setup on this machine. One is root, one is my own, and one is for my kids. My account and root work fine, but today when I tried to log my kids on, startx fails (it also fails from runlevel4). I have tried creating new accounts and they fail as well. I'm not sure when the issue started, but it's been less than a week I believe. The consistent error which I receive is
Quote:
(EE) Error compiling keymap (server-0)
(EE) XKB: Couldn't compile keymap
XKB: Failed to compile keymap
Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect setup of xkeyboard-config. Fatal server error: Failed to activate core devices.

Strange thing happend two days ago. I just wanted to reboot my computer and now I'm no longer able to boot o0. My system is runnig with a full encryption with luks/cryptsetup. I'm using a passphrase to unlock my first partition and it will unlock the others by itself. So far so good. But now it doesnt work anymore... I'm not sure what I did before, but what I know, I didn't change anything! about cryptsetup. I did only a little "update" with the recommended packages from the repositories (guess only 4-5 updated)
I already checked with live cd and same thing there. Not able to unlock any device (what seems strange to me, cause there are 4 of them and all corrupted at the same time...?)
I always get the error message: unlock failed, bad password or options? (on boot) Command failed: No key available with this passphrase (live cd)
First thing I did was checking wheter all modules are loaded:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lsmod
Module Size Used by
sha256_generic 11580 0

I am using Centos 5.5. I have a luks partition that I can successfully open and mount manually. But the problem is upon boot up, the device is missing from /dev/mapper/device_name until I manually luksOpen it..then it appears as it has before. This makes it a problem for me to have it open and mounted automatically upon boot up. Why is the /dev/mapper/device_name missing untill I manually luksOpen it?

I am using CentOS 5.2. I am installing from disc on a machine with Intel Embedded Server Raid Technology. It has two 500 GB SATA drives. During the initial boot process, it sees that these two devices exist. However, after getting into the screen to partition and configure RAID, it just shows this:
Drive /dev/mapper/ddf1_MegaSR R! #0 (475879 MB) (Model: Linux device-mapper)
I want to do a RAID1 so that the disks are mirrored. However, I would expect to see both drives listed. I can select RAID to create RAID partitions, but I think I need to be able to see both drives in order to do this correctly.
