Slackware :: Kaffeine Won't Start On One Of 13.37 Systems
Jun 10, 2011I have 13.37 installed on three PCs. Two nvidia (propriertary driver from Slackbuilds) and one ATI (radeon dirver). Kaffeine 1.1 installed from Slackbuild on all three machines. Runs fine on the ATI box and on one of the nvidia boxes, but fails to start (or provide any messages when command-line started) on the other nvidia box.The box on which it will not start is also the box that has a DVB card in it - which is why I particularly want kaffeine to run there as it has a really easy interface to the TV card which ran just fine under Slack 13.1.
My gut feeling it that the problem is connected to the presence of the TV card which is somehow srewing up initialisation of kaffeine, but (other than removing the card physically) I am not sure how to test this or test whether the card is working. lspci and dmesg shows that it has recognised during boot-up.Any ideas on how I should investigate this? Or on how I can bypass the problem by configuring vlc (which runs fine for dvds and video clips) to view DVB output?

Jul 17, 2011I have a weird HD video in wmv and mkf files playback problem. Every HD video i attempt to play using vlc with vaapi hardware acceleration looks like this: My hardware configuration is i3 cpu, and i am using it's integrated HD2000 video card, which has DVI, HDMI and VGA outputs, which all i am using (not at the same time). However, the problem is present in every combination (DVI only. DVI+HDMI. DVI+VGA. DVI+HDMI+VGA).
As for software, I am using stock 32bit Slackware 13.37, with stock 2.37.6 kernel. And for HD video playback I have installed VLC-1.1.10. libva-0.32.0 and MPlayer-20110624 all these packages came from Alien pastures, so they are quality packages And my vlc settings are also stock :/

May 15, 2010Whenever I monitor my CPU's, it seems only the first is ever utilized, with the second always being at 0%.Does this mean it is not being used, or just not being reported as in use?Is there anything I could do to improve the situation if it is not being used as much as it could be?On Windows, I can assign processes to both cores, or either one. Is there a way to do something similar in Linux?

Nov 18, 2010Booting up this morning, no problem. But I accidentally let my laptop go into suspend mode, which doesn't work, so I had to force a restart (Suspend mode on my laptop won't allow me to wake it up again). Now, on rebooting, X doesn't work. I usually boot to RL3 then use startx. Now it just flashes the screen then gives me this error -

If I su - to root and then do "init 4", I get to xdm, and I can log in. X then starts, but with no sound, wrong keymaps, launchers not working; all sorts of things wrong. If I startx as root I get a normal desktop. I have tried copying root's xinitrc to /home/spoovy, but makes no difference.
Slackware :: Chassis Fan At Max - No Speed Control?
Oct 4, 2010I got a new computer and got it running Slackware64-current. It's motherboard is an ASUS M4A88TD-M and it's processor is an AMD Phenom II x4 965. I decided to get some chassis fans to improve it's thermal performance. But, since I started the computer after installing the new fan (only one of the 3 I got) the fan's speed is at max and it's very noisy. Sep 22, 2010I have 3 accounts setup on this machine. One is root, one is my own, and one is for my kids. My account and root work fine, but today when I tried to log my kids on, startx fails (it also fails from runlevel4). I have tried creating new accounts and they fail as well. I'm not sure when the issue started, but it's been less than a week I believe. The consistent error which I receive is

Jan 22, 2010I use vsftpd. I would like to know if there is a way to limit the upload speed. Only the upload speed so the "anon_max_rate" and "local_max_rate" don't do the job. Someone told me about the trickle but I expected a more recent application.

OpenSUSE :: Get Application To Utilize More Than One Core In Multi-core Setup?
Mar 27, 2011I have a command line OCR program called OCR Shop XTR (Vividata corp) that I am using on a system with a 6-core AMD chip. I changed the bios so that the 6-cores were activated, but htop shows me that while the program is running, I am only getting activity on one core (the program maxes out the one core with consistent usage between 97% and 100%).
I have read that many programs are not written to take advantage of multiple core cpu's. However, I am just hoping that there is some way to get this program to take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know of a way to invoke programs from the command line which would spread the workload out among additional cores?

Reading and writing works absolutely fine with small files but large files are tediously slow in writing to the server. (rw,no_subtree_check) are options in exported directories.
What is your experience with NFS and how can I speed up large file/folder transfer(write) speeds?
Debian :: Wheezy Only Recognizes 1 Core Or Dual Core CPU?
Sep 7, 2011I have now installed Wheezy on two different hard drives and in each case it seems only one CPU of my dual core CPU computer is recognized. System Monitor, Gkrellm and lscpu show just one when prior to the new install the old Wheezy showed both CPU's. I have put the hard drive into two other computers with dual core CPU's and all show just one CPU.
Interestingly System Profiler and Benchmark (hardinfo?) > Devices > Processors now show a large amount of processor infomation when with the old Wheezy I would only see both CPU's listed and nothing else.

Searching online gave one option to find out and that was the mpstat command. I therefore ran the command and got the following output.As the result says, it shows only 1 cpu. A start-up script invokes the i8k module: $ udo /usr/sbin/modprobe i8k force=1 which creates /proc/i8k. The man page for i8kctl is straightforward: a few simple commands to read info from the aforementioned file.So. I know nothing about writing even basic bash scripts. I gave it a go here but I know this is way wrong. Would anyone like to help a guy out? This is my starting point (don't laugh):

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading From Core 4 To Core 10?
May 20, 2009I have created a virtual machine of a system running Fedora Core 4 and I need to upgrade it to Fedora Core 10. Based on what I have read, it iis possible so I started theupgrade process. I get an error message saying that /dev/hda6 (my root paritition does not exist) even though it does.
Does the installer need to read a label from /etc/fstab? I executed tune2fs -L / /dev/hda6 amd ,and added LABEL=/ for the corresponding entry for fstab. but the FEDORA CORE 10 is still giving the same problems for the installation process. Should I upgrade to an intermediate verson like Fedora Core 7 first?
General :: Processes And CPU 4-core - Which Core The Program Used?
Mar 26, 2011I've a program that launches new processes, and wait for them to die before it exits. So, for example, my program is a process, and it launches 3 more processes, and when the 3 child processes end, it will exit.
As you see, at end of the example, the program used a total number of 4 processes.
1 - Now, I'm running this program in a CPU with 4 cores. This means that the program used each core for each process?
2 - How can I know which core the program used?

Jul 23, 2011Ubuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

Oct 7, 2009I want to generate core dump files from my program when it crashes. Its a pretty big process and has about 10-11 threads in it.I have followed the documentation to enable core dump by setting ulimit to unlimited etc. I quickly tried "A demo program creating a core dump" from the following webpage, which succeeds in Segfault and dumping a core file in the directory that I configured.However, I tried running my original program and caused it to crash. I did this by making calls to kill(), raise() or the same null pointer access as shown in the webpage above. In each case, my program crashed but did not generate a core dump file. Am I missing something?My program is in C++ and my environment is Redhat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20)
Going through the "Why do I NOT get a core dump?" section on the same webpage as above, I can see two potential problems. One - there are issues with the suid/sgid (bullet # 6). I am not able to change any settings with suid because my system does not contain either /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable or /proc/sys/kernel/suid_dumpableTwo, my program has threads in it and the bullet # 8 is the problem.
CentOS 5 Hardware :: Infiniband (mlx4) Works On 16-core System But (now) Fails On 32-core System
Jan 27, 2010We have a small cluster of 20 HP systems, all running CentOS 5.3 in an NFS-root environment. Half are quad-socket, quad-core Xeon E7340 @ 2.40GHz (total 16 cores), the other half are 8-socket, quad-core Opteron 8354 (total 32 cores). All systems have a Mellanox Infiniband adapter ("Mellanox Technologies MT25418 [ConnectX VPI PCIe 2.0 2.5GT/s - IB DDR / 10GigE] (rev a0)")
With kernel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5, infiniband works fine on all systems.
With the update to kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 (and both types of node running the same NFS-root image), the 16-core Xeons still work fine. Infiniband no longer works on the 32-core Opterons. Specifically, either the ib0 interface fails to appear, or it does appear but when configured with an IP address, doesn't actually work. In either case, loading the IB kernel modules takes a long time, but I haven't instrumented the load script yet to see which module, if any, is at fault. More errors listed below.
However, if I tweak the BIOS of the 32-core systems to reduce the per-socket core count to 2 (so effectively 8-socket, dual-core, down to a total of 16 available cores), Infiniband starts working again. Putting it back to 32-cores makes it fail. Booting the older kernel makes it work again. In summary: old kernel, IB works on all systems. Newer kernel, IB only works on 16-core systems.
Updating the IB firmware from 2.5.0 to 2.7.0 (latest available) doesn't help. I also did a full 'yum update' to make sure that libmlx4, openibd all other associated packages were up-to-date. Doesn't help either.

Ubuntu :: Cd Burner Goes To 16 Speed Burning And Up: Cannot Burn At 4 Speed
Dec 20, 2010i both have the same problem, i'm trying to burn my images at 4 or 8 speed, but ubuntu 10.04 says that the hardware does not support that kind of speed and switch up to 16 speed and more. i know it can burn at low speeds, at least in windows, it is a bit strange that fast burning is okee, and slow not, what can i do to prevent this? i don't wanna burn to much errors on my discs
