Feb 27, 2011I am using SBOpkg, but for the ~30 3rd party packages I have most of the slackbuilds are already out of date, and I don't expect they will be updated when security issues or whatever arise.
So is the only solution to subscribe to the individual mailing list for each piece of software, or is there a more automatic way?

But for 15... would I install the rawhide one for rpmfusion? cause the other options are for older Fedora's.... or is there an updated rpmfusion etc for Fedora 15 that hasn't arrived yet? How does it work in this regards so I can have up to date 3rd party packages etc?

Nov 5, 2010I am looking to upgrade a box of mine using command line only. I am going from 10.04 to 10.10 and have changed all instances of lucid to maverick within the sources.list file but now I don't want to continue until I can be safe to upgrade by disabling the third-party repos. How can I disable these using the command line? Should I just move the sources.list.d folder? Any other ways I'm missing?

Jul 14, 2010I have searched on the internet but didn't manage to find out how to flag 3rd party repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/50unattended-upgrades. It installs all updates from the stock Ubuntu repos but none from 3rd party repositories I later added (e.g. Chromium PPA, Skype, etc.). I understand I have to manually add the lines but I'm not sure what's the format for this. How to do this? Here's how my 50unattended-upgrades file looks like:

Apr 7, 2011I installed a LAMP server using RHEL 5.5 but we needed a higher version of php than was available in RHEL Yum repositories. I think at the time I installed Dag Wieers and got a 3rd party package. My question is the following:
1. How do I remove the 3rd party packages?
2. How do I remove Dag Wieers from my Yum repo list?
3. Anything else I need to know to get all 3rd party packages off?

Aug 15, 2010I need to install some packages, but it fails because I previously installed gnome-shell testing, and now have the ricotz ppa packages conflicting with the default packages. See error below.

Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (=2.20.1-0ubuntu2) but 2.20.1-0ubuntu3~10.04~ricotz2 is to be installed
Depends: libpango1.0-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libatk1.0-dev but it is not going to be installed
How do I remove these packages and re-install the default ones, without risking damage to my system?
UPDATE: I have now tried to remove this packages using ppa-purge and the new ubuntu tweaks, but for the life of me I cannot get rid of them.

May 23, 2010I wanted to install opera browser (not that I like it) in my new lucid (updated from karmic) but the package is not in the repos. I also need libmysqlclient15off as a dependency for mysql-workbench but is also missing from lucid repos.
However, they are in the karmic repos. So, what should I do? I could download de debs and install them but my question is whether they should be available in lucid repos and if the'll be.

Jan 8, 2011I'm using openSUSE 11.3 with KDE 4.5.4. The updater applet works fine for me, however I think it only checks for updates from the update repo. I tried to modify this behaviour by right clicking the icon and checking "show available updates, when the backend provides it(for experts)" (translation from polish so it may not be 100% accurate) but the behaviour is the same, it only prompts me when there are updates available in the update repo but I would like it also to prompt me when there are updates available in the packman and KDE stable repo. Is it possible to force the updater applet to do this ?

May 26, 2010i recently ressurected an old laptop by making a great digital photo frame out of it. I used a nifty app called Webilder (webilder.org) which grabs photos from my flickr account and any tags i specify and sets them as my desktop and changes them every minute. Then i used some code/preference panels (dont remember exactly) that i found by googling to hide the top bar and the task bar, and the mouse pointer after it hasnt moved for a second. that way my photos are full screen....however, after 10 minutes, my screen changes to a blank (black) screen. the backlight is still on. it's killing me cause this thing is perfect without that one bug.i have the screensaver & power management settings set accordingly... (never idle, etc) and i used "gconf-editor" to edit my screensaver prefs... everything looked correct but i set all the integer values to 100000 just to be safe.

The SlackBuild scripts from slackbuilds.org or from Slackware DVD usually contain --disable-static option to prevent building the .a file. And if configure script doesn't allow such option, the .a file is deleted before the package is created.I am wondering what is the reason for that? Is it just the matter of conserving disk space? Are there also other reasons?

Jun 16, 2011I have 3 computers connected via an ethernet cable to the same ADSL modem. Each has its own internet address and what appears to be a local address (10.1.1.1, 10.1.1.2 etc).
I would like to enable file sharing between the three but I don't want one of them to be a gateway for the others and I don't want any information that the 3 computers share to go out on the net.
So far, the slack book and man pages imply that years of research are ahead of me and none mentions a "gateway free" configuration.

I'm really impressed that Slack is running at what appears to be native speed, but in virtual machine. Hardware response is normal, WIFI and LAN are both working great for my normal tasks.So, I downloaded a few much needed patches, and new ISO image for one of my old desktop PCs. Now, my problem is I can't connect my USB cdwriter to my virtual slackware or share folders in the Win7 install with the virtual slackware. I read a few of tutorials on the Oracle VBox website, and several of the ones here on LQ, and none of them seem to solve my problems.

Sep 30, 2010just curious if there was some discussion about reasons (not)-including Lua in stock Slackware packages ? IMHO it perfectly fits to distro's KISS philosophy, is very small and packaging maintenance is very easy (only glibc dependency, simple compilation and installation proces). Slackware contains programming language implementations of Common Lisp, Guile Scheme, Ada 95 which I find more exotic then Lua in these days.
