Slackware :: 13.1 - KUser And Groups (ADM / Wheel)

Oct 24, 2010

I want to go to 13.1 but I have never managed to figure out the importance of the wheel, adm and users and other groups in KUser. I suspect that it is important but the standard explanations stop short of KUser as though no one wants to understand what it does and how it affects the way the PC and Slack work?

Slackware :: Get Standard PS/2 Wheel Mouse Working On The Console Command Line

Aug 13, 2010

I am trying to get my standard PS/2 Wheel mouse working on the Console command line, and seem to be having major problems getting it to work.

For the record, I am NOT talking about X, Xterm's or any Graphical Interface, my mouse wheel works fine in these environments.

I am purely concerned with getting the mouse wheel to work on the Console.

After many hours of reading forum posts about getting the wheel to work on the Console, this is what I have tried to date:

1. I have downloaded and installed every version of gpm I could find in the hope that one would utilise the wheel. (No Success).

2. I compiled and installed the latest version of gpm stable (1.20.6) to see if the wheel would work with it. (No Success).

3. I have tried setting up gpm-1.20.6 as a repeater to X, using every string I could find (msc, ms3, pnp .. etc), as well as every /dev entry in xorg.conf /dev/mouse, /dev/input/mice/, dev/gpmdata/, /dev/psaux ... etc). (No Success).

4. Created directories and configured a gpm.conf to both /etc/ and /etc/conf.d/ in the hope that gpm was looking for them there (read that in one forum or another). (No Success).

5. I then tried to find mouse wheel patches for gpm, and then downloaded the relevant version source gpm.***.tar.gz to go with these patches. Nearly every single one of the patches failed to apply (using patch -p1 >), except for one version I tried that did apply ... but then failed to make (stating that the source had a different signedness or some such thing) ??? (No Success).

6. I looked into IMwheel, but that seemed to be a purely X program that was a lazy way of writing ZAxisMapping in xorg.conf. (No Success).

So now I am stumped ... Does anyone know if if is possible to get:

a). A Wheel Mouse Patch for a recent version of gpm (1.20.6) that will actually apply, and then make?

b). A prepackaged recent version of gpm-1.20.6.tgz that has been patched to enable the wheel that I can use?

c). Any other information that may enable the mouse wheel to start working on the console.

Slackware :: What Groups Should User Be Added To

Jun 12, 2011

So I just recently installed fresh 13.37 over my 13.1 install. Went multilib, and added myself to the usergroups I thought I might need. But truth is, I don't know what half of these are and I just picked the ones that sounded right. I'm the only user on this computer, although I might possibly maybe add another someone if I have to for some reason.

For my user account, I added myself to:
Code:
bin
disk
mem
kmem
wheel
floppy
mail
news
uucp
man
dialout
audio
video
cdrom
games
mysql
sshd
gdm
shadow
ftp
messagebus
haldaemon
plugdev
power
netdev
scanner
users
console
kismet
vboxusers

Basically, I want my own account to be able to do everything I normally do without too much restriction (use the disc drive, mount hard drives, browse the web, read/send email via Thunderbird, download stuff, etc), but leaving the important stuff to root so that if someone else happens to use the computer under my account, they can't do any damage. Did I select the right groups for this? Should I add or remove any? And what groups should a user have if I just want them able to browse the web, download files, use their /home, run non-root apps, and nothing else?

Slackware :: New Install (Salix 13 Not Slack) Volume Wheel On Toshiba A205 Laptop Doesn't Work?

Slackware :: Huge Amount Of Groups (LFS Built)

Feb 19, 2010

Does anyone notice that Slackware's user/groups is cluttered with things no one will ever need, do you need be to be part of the slocate group? like really? Why doesn't every program just have its own group then, I look at my distro (LFS built), SuSE and some others and I can't help but notice the huge amount of groups in slackware, if you going to add groups for everything then why in the universe do we even need sudo for? Just make the binary you want to work a group and change its ownership..... wtf is Pat and the rest of Slackware doing?

Slackware :: User Permissions/groups To Access USB Scanner?

Jan 17, 2010

Slackware 13 64 bit Hp Photosmart c4280 USB (All-in-one)

- Printer successfully configured using CUPS

- Scanner only works when I am Root.

- When trying to access scanner as user it says there is no scanner attached.

What should be the groups for this user in order to access the scanner? Actually, they are: haldaemon, disk, audio, video, cdrom, plugdev, power, scanner, lp. Below are the outputs for sane-find-scanner (as both root and user), although, since the scanner works well under root, I am almost sure it is a problem with setting permissions and groups.

Quote:

# sane-find-scanner
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

Ubuntu Servers :: Get A List Of Both The Local Groups And The Groups In The Active Directory?

Feb 4, 2011

I already know of a work around to fix this problem, but I guess my question is why is this not working as expected? I am using a Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory for authentication.

I have run auth-client-config for the ldap profile and pam-auth-update. When running getent passwd, I get a list of both the local users and the users in the active directory (with populated information in the Unix schema extension). When running getent group I get a list of both the local groups and the groups in the active directory (with populated information in the Unix schema extension).

Interestingly enough, though, when I run su DOMAINUSER, after the prompt for the password I get an authentication error. In /var/log/auth.log I can see an entry with pam_ldap: missing "host" in file "/etc/ldap.conf". The SRV records in the DNS servers resolve correctly. I've checked this with nslookup and I have seen the records within my zone file. Obviously if the ldap.conf file is working with getent and the ldap server is resolving from the SRV records, it is working fine.

The interesting part is that the Windows Server 2008 R2 AD machine shows in the event viewer that there was a successful authentication, yet the Ubuntu box says no. When I add the host within the ldap.conf file, everything works...getent and the actual authentication, either initial login or su.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mapping UNIX Groups To Windows Groups?

Oct 12, 2010

I am currently trying to set up a Samba domain server. In the Samba-HOWTO-Collection I found an
example file.(Point 3.3.3.1) In the explanations of the example below, the author says I need to map UNIX Groups to NT Groups. He writes a shell-script of how one could do it, but when I copy it and then execute it, I get the error:

Bad option: rid=512
Bad option: rid=513
Bad option: rid=514

The other groups do get mapped, just the Domain Admins, Domain Users and Domain Guests dont. This is the shell from the HOWTO:

#!/bin/bash
#### Shell-Skript f ̈r sp ̈tere Verwendung aufbewahren
net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Admins" unixgroup=ntadmins rid=512
net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Users" unixgroup=users rid=513

General :: LFS /tools/bin/groups Not Displaying Supplementary Groups?

Jun 8, 2010

So i am at the stage of about to install the basic system and am using a derivation of the package management provided by Matthias S. Benkmann. To this end I am using his useradd and groupadd scripts to update the files:

/etc/passwd
/etc/group

My issue is that when I run the commands(created as part of temporary system when installing coreutils):

Code:

/tools/bin/su linux
#then as user
/tools/bin/groups

(here linux is the name of the user) This only returns the user being in the group named after user but not the additional group of 'install' Also, prior to logging in as user, if I use this command as root:

Code:

/tools/bin/groups linux

linux install This then returns that the user is in the correct groups. Lines from relevant files look like:

Code:

#/etc/passwd
linux:x:10000:10000::/usr/src/build:/bin/bash
#/etc/group

Ubuntu :: Mouse Wheel Scrolls Too Much?

Jun 29, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu for the first time in a couple of years, and I'm having a problem with my mouse wheel scrolling about a half a page with every click of the mouse wheel. I never had that trouble in the past.In Firefox, I changed the correct settings inmousewheel.withnokey so that it should only scroll one line and I set the option to use the system settings to false. It still scrolls about a half a page at a time.

It's not just Firefox, it's everything, including LibreOffice, and everything else that uses a scroll wheel. I have installed Xubuntu-Desktop and also Kubuntu-Desktop. I noticed in Unity and Xfce, there are no settings for how many lines the mouse wheel scrolls. In KDE, there actually is a setting. I set it to one line, and it didn't change anything. I opened up a document in LibreOffice, and it still scrolls almost a whole page with one click of the wheel. Firefox still scrolls about a half a page.

Ubuntu :: FireFox Mouse Wheel Scrolling Up?

I just finished installing 10.04. When I use the mouse wheel to scroll up, Firefox loads previous pages in my history. I had the same problem in 9.10. I've searched through the net looking for solutions. Most solutions talk about adjusting mousewheel.withnokey options. However, everything I try doesn't stop it from loading previous pages when using the mouse wheel to scroll up. My current settings are as follows:

mousewheel.withnokey.action = 0
mousewheel.withnokey.numlines = 6
mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines = true

Using the mouse wheel to scroll down works fine. It's only when scrolling up. Has anyone else experienced this problem. I'm using a Microsoft Optical Intellimouse

Ubuntu :: Configure PS/2 Scroll Wheel Mouse?

Jul 7, 2010

When I originally installed 10.04 on a new machine, I was using a temporary PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse. The mouse was a simple two-button mouse. This worked fine. Now, I have moved my Microsoft PS/2 scroll wheel mouse from my previous computer to the new machine, but the scroll wheel does not work. How do I make it work?

I had hoped that Ubuntu would detect my different (new) hardware and configure it for me, but it did not. Googling leads me to xinput, but I can't figure out what to do with that and it indicates it is for 'on the fly' configuration. I want it to be permanently configured. Is there some way to invoke the installation tool again to reinstall the mouse?

Ubuntu :: Accessing USB Steering Wheel (Logitech G27)?

In a development project currently going on, we do plan to use an usb steering wheel for controlling an system by using its input. The device used is a "Logitech G27 Force Feedback Racing Wheel", which also has three pedals and a clutch, both connected to the steering wheel device itself and then to the pc using an usb connector. For i'd love to use ubuntu to connect that input controller, i'd like to know, if it is possible to read that devices inputs to the system using ubuntu linux. Important: It is not necessary to have a working driver that could be used in any games (e.g. TORCS), i only have to get the controller's outputs [and maybe set force feedback].I already did some searches on the www, but failed in finding any appropriate information on this topic.
