View 1 RepliesI have a LAN of about 70 computers that I would like to share media files between. I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. I am completely new to Ubuntu and Samba so please make explanations thorough. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

I have two PCs , once runs 9.10 Ubuntu Desktop named "desktop" and another runs 9.10 Ubuntu Server named "server". as you know that "desktop" PC has a GUI installed , and i write this from there now, but "server" PC does not have anything like that so i use SSH to connect and administrate it.
Here is what i need, I want a graphical way to share the files in "server" PC so i can edit files in that (such as css , php and html files ) on the fly and i don't need to ftp them back in to "server" from "desktop" after editing. How do i get that done ?
I can see linux share folders from windows,but not the windows share files from Linux.The windows pc name is jm-pc and the share file is temp. When the command nmblookup is used it discovers the Windows pc ok.
Code:
nmblookup jm-pc
querying jm-pc on 10.0.0.255
10.0.0.3 jm-pc<00>
i created a folder /home/windows and ran the smbmount command
Code:
root[~]# smbmount \\jm-pc\temp /home/windows
mount error: could not resolve address for jm-pc: No address associated with hostname
No ip address specified and hostname not found
When i try to run smbclient,and enter the correct password that was created for samba(which is the same password as the Windows pc):

I did some minor upgrades to my 10.04 box which grew and grew and grew until I'd hosed xorg, and after some unwise choices about uninstalling X11 as a means to rebuild the system I now have a drive I was using for 10.04 that basically doesn't have an O/S any more... don't ask! First class stupid.Anyhow, I've cracked open a new drive, installed 11.04 and was planning to mount the old /home/me folder as a symbolic link from 11.04. All that was fine until I remembered that 1) I no longer have an OS on my 10.04 drive and I've encrypted my home folder on the 10.04 machine. That home folder is still intact, but obviously not much use right now.
So, have I just hosed myself completely (as I suspect) hosed myself or is there a way to capture the cleartext data from the encrypted folder and move it into the 11.04 machine, either with rsync, restoring the O/S to the formerly 10.04 drive and restoring the encryptied /home to that drive?
Goal 1) recovery contents of encrypted folder to plaintext, but lacking ability to log into O/S that generated the /home folder
2) move data to 11.04
3) attach the cleartext verison of home to my 11.04 account and get to work.
I have recently installed Fedora F11 with a Samba server. The smb.conf seems fine but I cannot see any of the files in the share from a Windows machine. I am probably missing something unbelievably simple but driving me nuts!
I can see the machine and share from windows
When logged in as the user fred I can see all the files in Linux - most are owed by fred.
smbuser:
Code:
# x_name = SMB_name1 SMB_name2 ...
root = administrator admin
nobody = guest pcguest smbguest
fred = fred
smb.conf:
Code:
[global]
workgroup = Workgroup
server string = Samba Server Version %v
netbios name = MachineName
hosts allow = 127. 192.168.0.
.........
[Docs]
comment = Main Documents
path = /mnt/documents
read only = no
browseable = yes
valid users = fred
.........
The other thing I find a bit odd is that
Code:
service smb restart
does not effect the way that the windows machine sees Samba. It appears that you need a full restart to get the changes to show properly.
Thanks,
Michael
I am trying to get write access to a share on xp machine via automatically mounting
the share via the following /etc/fstab entry .... after doing a sudo mount -a ... I can view the files on the 'C-share' but can not write them back to the server
//WINBLOWS/C-share /media/C-share cifs,rw
This used to work and allow share files to be read and writable before some ubuntu updates.
I am currently running ubuntu 9.10.
PS: if I connect via places->network ... the files are readable and writable ... but I need this setup to be automatic with a mount for someone else.
What needs to be added to the above fstab entry
First let me preface this with saying that I have been googling, and trolling boards trying to find a solution, tutorials, any thing to help me what I am trying to do, all day (since 8 am, when I started work, till now 3:50 pm) and I have found little to improve my situation.My goal is to setup my desktop (running Fedora core 12) as a server that can be accessed from anywhere. I would like to be able to have streaming music (find a song, or an album, you want to listen to, click and play) from any location, any computer, and I would also like to store files and such that I could also share with whomever I give permission. I have found plenty of tutorials helping with Apache and SSH, so anything along those lines would be nice.

We have a homegrown process that runs on a windows box and produces a csv file. We mount the directory these are output to using autofs/cifs and then process them using a program on our linux database servers.
Is there a way from linux, looking at the cifs share, to tell if the target file is currently in use by a process on the windows box? We are having issues where an incomplete file is being processed occasionally.
I have a similar problem with Microsoft Access and Photoshop. I am using Samba 3.2.5 and Debian 5.0
View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing SUSE 11 with Gnome. I mounted a CIFS share from a Windows server as /mnt/win. With the file browser, I can browse to file system/mnt/win and then the files and folders of the Windows share come up fine and I can open them. When I use the file browser to browse to network, the server hosting this share is listed. Then I browse to that server and it lists no shares (nothing at all). I can't go any further than the server. Is there a separate authentication necessary for the file browser to see this share from the network place?

For use on a test LAN, ie. security is not an issue, I need to install the most basic FTP server available just so we can share files back and forth between test hosts : launch FTPd, have it share a directory through either "anonymous" or a single, shared login/password?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.
View 1 Replies View Related1. I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.
I removed CYGWIN and installed a Ubuntu 10.10 64bit virtual box and now I have it running, but I still can't get it to run my CGI script from my webpage that i have on Ubuntu platform. I was wondering if there was a certain way that I need to install apache or whatever to get it running correctly.
View 6 Replies View Relatedthis has happened in different distros, so far i have tried slack, arch, and mint at work i have an xp box with a shared folder i created. on my linux box i setup fstab as follows
Code:
//winxp/temp$ /home/user/temp cifs rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,credentials=/home/user/.creds 0 0
this gets mounted correctly and i can read/write the shared folder at home i have a win7 box that i create a share on and use the exact same code in fstab, but it wont mount the share. i get something like permission denied or access denied is there a difference in how winxp and win7 share folders? my usernames on the linux boxes match those of my windows boxes at each location. i have given my win accounts full access and control over the win shares.
i configured ftp in my server.i just want to access the web page created in server through ftp.ya i can able to access. but the problem is ,it,s showing all the files and folders of the server like Desktop,Documents etc.....
But its just need to show only the site files such as index.html and its sub folders.
i think the problem is because of logging in to the server through ftp as normal user,which is created in server. so i think if we login as ftp user we can able to access only the website files.
how to create ftp users.
I'm using the "Beginning PHP5, Apache, MySQL Web Development" book from WROX to teach myself these processes. I'm a retired programmer and trying to keep my brain active. I've been able to get through most of the process and get things to work. But getting a picture upload and then display it is killing me. The picture is moved from the initial directory and placed in the destination but will not show on the web page, I get a place holder and all the information about the picture, but no pic. The MySQL is processing all the database stuff .I haven't a clue what is not working, Firefox, Apache or what. I'm running Fedora 14.
Here is the code I'm using:
Code:
upload_image.php
<html>
<head>

i have already configured a domain in my server. now i have configured multiple local ip addresses,can i configure a domain for each local ip address. is it possible. if possible how can i access the web page through apache.Because already i am accessing the web page for a pre-configured domain from the path /var/www. if i able to create new domain.From where the apache fetches that index.html file, when requested through browser.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm kinda new to all of this so I believe there's a simple solution for what I need I just don't know how it's done.
So I've configured a vsftpd, ftp server and enabled the anonymous user, therefore when I do
Code:
ftp://my_location.com
a directory like view is displayed in my web browser, corresponding to /srv/ftp where the files for the anonymous account are kept. Now I've made a little web page and I've copied it there, and can be executed running main.html so the address to access the web page would be
Code:
ftp://my_location.com/main.html
My problem is that I don't want anybody to have the possibility to see the directory like display so I'm wondering if when someone does ftp://my_location.com can't this be redirected so it will do ftp://my_location.com/main.html instead?, making the display of files and directories impossible from the ftp://my_location.com
Code:
# service httpd stop
Stopping httpd: [ OK ]
And now we access the web site by typing the URL: http://192.168.56.10/ and the following message, as expected, is displayed:
Code:
This webpage is not available. The webpage at http://192.168.56.10/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. But is there any way to display a different web page or message when we have brought down the Apache Server for maintenance so that a visitor on our web site would not think that we are gone with our bags and baggages...?
To Protect Web Page Directories With Passwords i have done the below configuration but the problem is when i click the linux it is not asking username and password,
Created new account for logging into web interface:
htpasswd -c /etc/httpd/conf/.htpasswd travelkarega
Created a file name .htaccess in /opt/apps/deploy/websites/travelkarega/html/
vi .htaccess
AuthUserFile /etc/httpd/conf/.htpasswd
AuthName "Please enter password"
AuthType Basic
<Limit GET POST>
require user travelkarega
</Limit>
Added these above entries in the file .htaccess
it was possible to run a script (something.sh) on a server when a button on a webpage is pressed. I already have Apache set up and I will set up php if I have to.

It gets through the authentication but it will not submit the form.
