I'm running Postfix in slackware 12.1. The mails are stored in /var/spool/mail/username. When a user's mailbox size got more than 200MB, the user can't check their mail. when it happend the log shows:

I'm looking into migrating postfix mailboxes and users from an old machine running Fedora5 to a new machine running cenOS. I was wondering, what would be the procedure to migrating over existing postfix mail to the new machine? Is it as simple as copying over /home directories and /etc/passwd etc?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWe're using sendmail with ldap routing. We've setup a new mailstore which some of our users are piloting.
We've been asked to configure sendmail to forward a copy of pilot users emails to the new mailstore (Zimbra) as well as the old (Sun Messaging).
I'm not exactly sure how to do this. I've tried modifying aliases to forward to 2 destinations, but ldap routing seems to take precedence before aliases.
i followed this tutorial to the "T", [URL]. I am not able to login to the mailboxes with squirrelmail, it says "connection dropped by imap server" I used the whole address as a login just like it said to do. I can sucessfully authenticate with outlook express but it throws an error that say's [URL], no such file or directory. i can telnet into it remotely but when i type ehlo [URL] it just keeps showing all the 250 lines and wont let me generate a message.
from what i saw on the comments on the tutorial and googling there are many other people with this problem, however i found no solutions. This is fresh work and i have not touched any config files since finishing the tutorial
i have setup mailrelay using postfix and relay email to exchange server. The problem is how can i relay email to multiple exchange server. For example: -
domain aa.bb.com relay to exchange server 10.10.10.10
domain 123.test.com relay to exchange server 192.168.10.5
I've tried to configure the mail service in RHEL6 but seems both sendmail and postfix can't use local user located in /etc/passwd.

I happily mapped any incoming email address of any valid hosted domain either to go out to it's final destination via smtp, or if the person has a local mailbox, it delivered locally. Any errors could be forced, and a catch-all for the domain could be directed also.
I've struggled with virtual hosts and transport and a combination of the two to come up with the same result for postfix. I have this feeling I'm missing something really simple, or I am not 'getting it' when I'm doing something postfixy and I still have sendmaily expectations. right path so I will at least know I'm pointing in the right direction and working with the right files to achieve my aims? Postfix is so amazingly powerful and flexible, I'm having trouble figuring this bit out.

I have a Linux server that has local mail service. There are few user accounts on this server. User may send the mail to each other but that only restrict to LAN environment only.
For example, I may

To send mail to user1. User are not able to send mail to public. Some service like hylafax using this local mail service to send notification of fax status.
I don't want to manage and maintain local mail service anymore. I have subscribed a package from ISP to host a public domain of my own. I wish to have my hylafax service to able to send the notification mails to public mail server, is that possible to do it? It is great if all mails that send to local mail server may forward to public mail server. That makes the local mail service serve mail forward only.

i currently installed centos 5.3 with postfix. My old server is centos 4.5 final / new 5.3 final. Old server has sendmail / new has postfix. how can i transfer all the mail and settings from the old to the new? also, the old mail server is mail.xxx.xxx and for testing purposes i named the new mail server mail2.xxx.xxx.
when i an ready to put it into production, the new server will need to be mail.xxx.xxx and the old removed from the system. How do i go about changing the name and making sure everything comes out correct?

Details: I have a server that requires email, but only for light use. I'm definitely not an expert, but I have set up a sendmail configuration on a previous server. I tried to configure sendmail first and then postfix later, when I couldn't get sendmail working. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, but I have a feeling the following might yield some important information. Note: this is the result for Postfix, but virtually the same thing happened with sendmail, too. That is, initially the telnet connection would close immediately. I have isntalled a server with Centos 5.2 OS, now I would like to switch from the default sendmail to postfix doing a yum install postfix I've noticed there is already available an rpm version for the OS but I would like to compile my own 2.5 version, I've noticed compiling from source does not allow me to use the mail switcher to tell to the system I'm gonna use Postfix instead of Sendmail as the default MTA while this is possible when I use the "official" rpm version of the package. Now my question is this, would this be a problem? There is some specific procedure/best practice I should follow? Or once compiled and configured Postfix I can safely disable/uninstall sendmail?

And done the points up to "Advanced mail server" and are trying to test mailing mail@mydomain.com to mail@mydomain.com (yes, the same inbox) using Thunderbird, through my own DNS, from the server.
But I get the following error: The message can not be sent because the connection to SMTP server mydomain.com timed out.
And when I check /var/spool/mail/virtual where the mailboxes are supposed to be stored there are none.
So I'm wondering how I create a mailbox with postfix.
I can add that I am quite a noob at linux but have to do this in a school project.
I'm using ubuntu server 10.04 32bit with GUI (yes I know, I know)
I'm just getting started with postfix for the first time (using courier pop) and everything is working well. However I can't seem to figure out how to only allow some system users to have mailboxes?
For example I have a few accounts which are FTP only accounts but they still have mailboxes under postfix? Is there any way to tell postfix the accounts that I actually want mailboxes for?
Also on a side note, I notice that mail seems to be stored under the user's home directory. I'm scared they may accidentally delete them.
I have been trying to increase the message_size_limit on my Debian 2.4.26 box with postfix 2.3.8. For example, I set message_size_limit and mailbox_size_limit to 104857600 (100m) and restart postfix. Running postconf -n confirms that it has changed. However when I send a test message it kicks it back saying the message size limit is 16777216 (16m, which is, incidentally, the default value of the berkeley_db_create_buffer_size parameter)

Tested it to make sure it was secure and all seemed good.I sent some test messages and see from the logs that mail is being delivered to the recipient. its only delivering mail to my user's local mbox on the linux server. IMAP appears to have its own mailbox and the two boxes are no linked. I was thinking it was an alias issue however I did at one point have the mailboxes to be the same.... now they are different... Here is the config file.... (I changed the domain names for privacy).

I have installed postfix and dovecot on my server and thought postfix will not only take SMTP connection from my e-mail client like Outlook, but also handles "mailx" commands from the server. However, it looks like sendmail is still responsible for sending mails from "mailx". I tested this by turning it on/off using "service sendmail stop" and "service sendmail start". Mails sent using "mailx" will only be sent when sendmail is up. When I did "yum info sendmail", it lists sendmail as an installed package. Is is safe to remove sendmail by running "yum erase sendmail", and let postfix handles "mailx" also?
