Server :: Unable To Write To DVD?
Mar 29, 2011
I am trying to make a bootable DVD in RHEL5 but it wont let me write to DVD. I have tried following command to write to DVD:
cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc -v -eject /root/inst/images/boot.iso
dvdrecord dev=/dev/hdc -v -eject /root/inst/images/boot.iso
I am getting the following error message when I run the above commands:
Error trying to open /dev/hdc exclusively... retrying in 1 second.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'
cdrecord: Device or resource busy. Cannot open '/dev/hdc'. Cannot open SCSI driver.
I have also checked /dev/ directory and cdrom is linked to hdc and cdrom-hdc.

I can map the share just fine, but cannot write, regardless of how open I make the permissions of the Samba share.
Share from testparm:
[student]
comment = Test share
path = /home/share/students
valid users = @students
admin users = DSSJCAdministrator
write list = @students
read only = No
create mask = 0770
force create mode = 0770
directory mask = 02770
force directory mode = 02770
directory security mask = 0775
guest ok = Yes
getfacl:
getfacl /home/share/students/
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: home/share/students/
# owner: root
# group: students
user::rwx
group::rwx
group:students:rwx
mask::rwx
other::rwx
AD auth works fine with winbind, getent/wbinfo returns properly enumerated groups.
Unfortunately, the logs say:
[2010/06/29 11:17:32, 2] smbd/open.c:2447(open_directory)
open_directory: unable to create New folder. Error was NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Hi,
I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with my Samba share. I have set up a directory /samba to serve up some movies, music, etc, on an Ubuntu 10.04 Server box. For now, I have given that directory 777 permissions, along with the subfolders:
Code:
drwxrwxrwx 4 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 18:02 Apps
drwxrwxrwx 3 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 19:02 Music
drwxrwxrwx 3 michal michal 4096 2010-08-14 19:27 Pics
drwxrwxrwx 5 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 19:48 Video
This is how my smb.conf file looks like for this particular share:
Code:
[share1]
comment = share1
browsable = yes
path = /samba
write list = michal
Furthermore, I went ahead and mapped the Samba user to my Linux user account in /etc/samba/smbusers:
Code:
michal = "michal"
When I try to login from a Windows machine using michal as the username, I can see the folders, but I am unable to create new files on the share. Considering that the file system permissions are liberal on the share directory, I have no clue as to why I'm still getting denied write permission.
Any ideas? Thanks!

I recently installed ubuntu 11.04. After installation, I created two ext4 partitions in my hard drive. My problem is that I can't create any files in these partitions. These partitions are not automatically mounted at boot time, but once I try to access them , they get mounted. I thought all this was managed by /etc/fstab file but I can't see any entry for these partitions there. So, I created an entry for both these partitions in fstab file with the following options: auto,user,exec,rw,suid,dev However, now when i boot, i see that there are two partitions already mounted as earlier and there are two more in the Places menu. I am not able to mount them since they are already mounted. And I still can't create any files in those partitions.

I have have Centos 5.3 which does not save files to USB drives. after copying over file to an empty drive the files are shown on the drive and can be opened and edited but when the drive is removed and reinserted the drive is empty again even though I have told the it to remove the device. I suspect that the file cache is not being flushed correctly. Is there a way of checking this and forcing it to flush the file cache if this is the problem?

I am trying to scrape all of the info off of an old Fedora disk so that I can referb the box and put new stuff on it, but for some reason I can't get the permissions (even as root) to write to the disk.
It is currently mounted under /media/backup and I can browse it all I want, but still can't write.

I'm having some issues writing files through dolphin (smb://computer_name/) to a Windows SBS share. It seems that every time I try and write a file it simply creates a 32KB file.
I was previously able to write to this (Opensuse 11.0 / 11.1 / 11.2) and nothing has changed on the Windows server (besides for windows updates).
I'm running:
Opensuse 11.3 KDE Version 4.5.2 (KDE 4.5.2) "release 10"
Dolphin Version 1.5

I used gparted to format and merge two partitions to a single 150gig partition. However, after mounting the partition (and entering my password) I am unable to write any files to it.I tried looking at its permissions. Both its owner and group is root.Could anyone help me by telling me how I could change this through gparted, the terminal, or any other way?

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 on a Sony Vaio. Because when I installed it I was new in Linux, I messed up with the partitions and I have lots of unused logical partitions in my extended one.
I have used Gparted to delete a number of partitions and create a new, bigger one (ext3, logical), within the Linux extended partition I have
well, first of all I do not understand why it created partitions that are not mounted, that is I can only access them typing my password and they got automatically unmounted as I restart the computer
but the worse is that I cannot write on it! I completely deleted the previous partitions but, when I open it, there is still a folder "lost and found" that I am not allowed to open (+_+) and when I drag anything into the window it says "error" that is I cannot write anything on an empty partition...

share a mount"/RAID" on my server: 192.168.0.2 with everyone on my network.192.168.0.*
From what I have listed below I am able to mount the share but I can not write or delete anything. It is almost like it is ro only permissions.
From the Server:
Code:
sudo cat /etc/exports
[sudo] password for jesse:
# /etc/exports: the access control list for filesystems which may be exported
# to NFS clients. See exports(5).
[code]....
Eventually I need to share 192.168.0.2:/RAID on two OSX computers as well. I read some places where you need to add insecure to your /etc/exports on your server in order for the OSX client to access the the share.

I am having a problem writing to an NTFS pendrive. I have created the NTFS pen drive in the following way:
Code:
fdisk /dev/sda
created the label with 'o', then written the table with 'w'
I've then gone into fdisk again :
Code:
fdisk /dev/sda
started the partition creation with 'n', and chosen 1 partition '1', then written that with 'w'
I then used mkntfs to format:
Code:
mkntfs /dev/sda1
The blkid command gives me this output:
/dev/sda1: UUID="58CEA9511D6BCEFA" TYPE="ntfs"
I can mount the pendrive (as root) with:
Code:
mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /mnt/pendrive
and the mount command output:
/dev/sda1 on /mnt/pendrive type ntfs (rw)
I have changed the permissions on /mnt/pendrive (while mounted) to 777, owner/group=root. However, when I try to copy something to the drive I get this error:
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/pendrive/file.txt': Permission denied

I'm running GNOME under Lucid on a 64-bit machine. Here's the background: Yesterday, I tried to delete a subfolder of my Local Folders directory. Right-clicking on the subfolder offered the usual menu of options including "Delete", but selecting "Delete" left the folder in place. In floundering around trying things to solve the problem, I tried opening Thunderbird from the command line, using "sudo thunderbird", following which I succeeded in deleting the recalcitrant subfolder. Here's the first stage in the problem:
But when I next opened Thunderbird in ordinary mode (i.e., as "ron" not as "superuser"), I discovered that the Inbox was no longer accessible. Clicking on "Get Mail" yielded only a small wheel-icon that spins, presumably showing activity in progress, without actually finishing by getting mail. The other various folders seemed to operate normally, in that they showed their contents when clicked on.

I have ubuntu server 10.4 installed on an Intel SS4200-E, which I have configured without any RAID. This machine acts as a media server to another PC. The other PC runs Windows 7 Ultimate. I have 3 1TB hard disks connected to it, and the file system on all the 3 are NTFS. I have mounted the hard disks as ntfs. I have made the folders on all the 3 hard disks shareable. I have configured Samba to make the folders on the hard disks "visible".
The ubuntu machine is in a headless configuration (it doesn't have any VGA card where can connect a monitor). I can configured SSH on it, so I can use putty from the Windows machine to logon to the ubuntu machine, but it is text based only. I am able to see all the 3 disks from the Windows machine. I am able to read/write into 2 of the disks. I am able to read, copy and delete from the 3rd disk, but not write new content to it.
Following is the snippet from /etc/fstab:
Code:
/dev/sda3 /media/Media1 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /media/Media2 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
/dev/sdc1 /media/Media3 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
Following are the lines which I have added to the end of /etc/samba/smb.conf:
Code:
[Media1]
path = /media/Media1
writable = yes
guest ok = yes

we are running a Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Upd 5) Kernel 2.4.21-32.ELsmp since several years. The server hosts an old ERP system who will be replaced at the end of the year.However it is necessary that some collegues are able to write some files to that server regulary. Since we are running Windows 7 on several machines, those users aren't anymore able to write to the samba share. Getting files from the share works fine.
But the problem seems not to be situated at the samba service because also the transfer using SSH (WINSCP) from any Win7 system to the server doesn't work.During testing we recogniced that transfering files smaller then 1kb works fine ... any file greater then 1kb ends up in an connection abort. This works with samba and also using SSH.All the workarounds editing some registry entries in Win7 for improving the interoperability between vista / win7 and samba don't work for us ... and also seem not to be the source of the problem.Is there a general known incompatibility between our RHEL version / kernel and Windows 7 regarding file transfers?

I got a new Sony Vaio Z and try to install Ubuntu on it. The laptop has got two 64 GB SSDs setup as a RAID 0 array. [URL]. As the configuration is done in the BIOS, I assume it's hardware RAID. [URL]. The problem is that - no matter what I try - the installers are unable to write the GRUB loader on the hard disk. I tried both, standard and alternate installer (9.10 / 64 bit), and both failed at that point. Not a really error message, it just says "cannot write GRUB boot loader".
I also tried two different scenarios:
- Ubuntu beside Windows (shrinked the partition for that)
- Ubuntu on the empty RAID

Dear all
I am new to git (and storing multiple copies of my code).
I was using git for one month (git status, git add, git commit) to store my files.
I have problems to add more files to my branch
git add BasisExpansion.R
fatal: Unable to write new index file
this was working great unless the day my system administrator destroyed my main partition (it was an accident) and installed everything from scratch. My home directory stayed intact (I did not lose any files not git files that are stored under /home). But from this point of time git returns always that error. My system administrator creater the same user and group as my old user was but this didnot fix the problem.
I am not sure If I can recover my old git structure or would it be better to wipe out the old git dir and start a new one?
