Apr 27, 2011

I run fetchmail to download all my emails from remote mail server to my linux server.

But every time when i run fetchmail -v i am getting a warning that " Running as root is discouraged"

I just want to know whether it is unsecure to run fetchmail as root user.

General :: Fetchmail Services - Running As Root Discouraged

Sep 26, 2010

I have installed release CentOS 5.5 w/ fetchmail services. I've already configured the /.fetchmailrc in the correct format that I've learned from topics and I've checked also the sedmail running status. When I invoke the #fetchmail command this often happens:

fetchmail: WARNING: : Running as root is discouraged.
2 messages for user1 at mx.mailserver.com.ca: (1 of 2) (4353 octets) .....flushed

I have configured two NIC 's One for the public IP and another for the local network, I've tried to use the two IP's in the POP3 and SMTP settings of Mozilla Thunderbird but still user1 can't get messages.

Server :: Spam/virus Fetchmail Option

Oct 7, 2010

My client has finally had enough of being attacked via SPAM/Viruses and having his single email account for his company being destroyed. Since it is a single account and he does not want to add additional accounts or create a new one(mail is hosted by ISP), I wanted to ask the forum on their opinion on using Fetchmail to download the POP3 mail and having it piped through SMAM Assassion or DSpam and or CLAM_AV or F-PROT. In addition to that I am going to use a corporate strength anti-virus such as F-prot(Been using for years) and really put this email through a microscope. I also was thinking of just blocking out all domains other than his clients list of domains so in other words block all and allow just the domains that we know are valid and are only from his clients. It is super restrictive but what I believe will end his issue.

Server :: Fetchmail - Downloading Messages From Gmail Account

May 22, 2010

I need to ask you how canIi make some fetchmail jobs to download mails from my gmail account into my mail account in my own server? My server is :
Linux Centos 5.4
Postfix Mail Server

I make a file named .fetchmailrc in my home directory and set its permissions to 755and the content of this file is:

set postmaster "postmaster"
set bouncemail
set no spambounce
set properties ""
poll imap.googlemail.com:993 protocol imap username "username@gmail.com" password "password"

I think something is not completed, I need to make that fetch to a specific user only, not all users.

poll pop.teledataict.com
protocol pop3
localdomains dot.com.gh

envelope X-Envelope-To:
qvirtual dot.com.gh
user "maildot3@teledataict.com" there
pass "mail"

Server :: Configure Fetchmail To Use Passwd For Local Delivery?

Jul 6, 2011

The common wisdom seems to be to setup an SMTP server (say postfix) so that connections either coming from the same host or where the end delivery is local can do so without using any authentication mechanism.

This will for example allow fetchmail to deliver fetched mail locally on port 25 (without logging in) for any user.

However, what if I setup the SMTP server to force every incoming connection to be authenticated regardless if the end delivery is local or relayed and regardless where the connection comes from.

Is it possible to configure fetchmail to use a password when doing the local delivery?

(I haven't been able to find any such configuration options in fetchmail.)

Software :: Configuring Fetchmail - Mail Server Setup

Aug 6, 2010

I have Ubuntu and I want to setup a mailserver. I use fetchmail to fetch mail But I wanted to configure fetchmail with fetchmailconf. I know, I can edit the configfile, but I wanted to use fetchmailconf. According to the man of fetchmail, fetchmailconf is very handy.

In synaptic, I installed fetchmail 6.3.2.2Ubuntu2.3 and I wanted to install fetchmailconf 6.3.2.2Ubuntu2 : well it didnt work
fetchmailconf 6.3.2.2Ubuntu2 needs fetchmail 6.3.2.2Ubuntu2. So, no worries: I searched the internet for fetchmailconf 6.3.2.2Ubuntu2.3, but I couldn't find any. Same with fetchmail6.3.2.2Ubuntu2

First of all, I want to flame synaptic for supplying 2 different versions for 2 pieces of software that only work with eachother.
Second: where can I find 2 matching versions? Or fix synaptic or maybe someone has a really cool solution?

Ubuntu Security :: Giving Root Permission To An Application But Without Running It As Root?

Jan 20, 2011

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out). Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.

Server :: Fedora Sending Mails From Root With Non-root Account?

Jul 14, 2011

I've started to get emails that would typically come from [URL] as [URL]. These emails come from services that send out emails (backup programs) directly, or from cronjobs. I've logged in as the non-root account and either sudo su - or su - to root and the restart the service at one point or another. If I login directly as root and bounce the service or cron the emails come across as from root. I don't see anything in my environment variables after I su to indicate what would cause this. I'm not sure where else to look? A pam setting? This seems to have happened between Fedora 10 and 14 (did a bunch of overdue upgrades recently) I've only got Fedora so I don't have anything to compare to. In Fedora 10 I did not have this problem.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Running A Script As Root?

Jul 23, 2010

I'd like to run my Apache start-up script under my own userid and not have to su over to root each time in order to run it. But if I run the script as myself I get errors on the "/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start" portion (which is the 'main' purpose of the script):

(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs

I don't care to waste anymore time just now, or spend anymore energy just now trying to resolve *those* problems. The script works fine when I execute it logged in as root (su). I've changed the permissions to 4777 so that *me* running the script that is executed *as root* should work:

ls -l apache_up.sh -rwsrwxrwx. 1 matt matt 1114 Jul 22 16:42 apache_up.sh But it still gives the above errors. I thought changing the sticky bit would work. How do I run this script myself and have it execute the "/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start" command - so that I don't have to su each time?
