I'm trying to install a package (validate) from pear.
but the command sudo pear install validate fails with error:

Looking around on the internet I found a bug report on debian:url
The fix is to update php5.
So now the question:
How do I update php5 or apply the patch mentioned in this bug report?
I have pear installed, but I'n not sure I have it configured properly.
When I do a phpinfo(), no where are the settings for pear (meaning where it's located). If I recalled there is supposed to be a setting displayed there for PEAR.

I am experiencing a bit of a problem with openssh-server. I installed the server like I normally do. It wouldn't work, so I tried using this. It still didn't work. Later, I have realised that when using service sshd start SSH says it started, but when you check if it's running with service sshd status it says it doesn'triend advised me to use /etc/init.d/sshd and I managed to get it started. I was trying to install PEAR on a remote Ubuntu server using putty. I ran an apt-get install php-pear command and everything went smoothly, but now i cannot access the website as it says 'can't establish a connection to the server' and in firebug, it shows the status 'aborted'. I even tried adding the pear path in php.ini file and restarting the apache server but no luck.

So, here it is : I have a working imap server (dovecot), installed following the guide provided here [url]. I can successfully telnet it, or ssl it (from localhost or from another ip of my local network). I can even use my thunderbird from another local computer. Well, for me it is working fine.
Then I installed roundcube (0.3.1-3) with synaptic, but I cannot connect to my localhost imap server.
I have set auth as plain ($rcmail_config['imap_auth_type'] = 'plain';)
Looking in my dovecot log, i see two different behaviour. One is when it seems correct, and roundcube log in imap server, but is disconnect immediately :
Second is when server is refusing the password :
I am working with a plain text passwd, with no encryption at all. Does roundcube encrypt the password I type before to sent it to imap ?
I cannot explain the first behaviour, when roundcube sometimes managed to connect but disconnect immediately. I manage ONE time to reach my mailboxes, but i don't know how, and this never happens again.
I'm configuring a server but at this time I can't send mail. I tried using the PHP mail() function and it didn't work. Webmin says I have no mail configured. I'll be the only user and mail recipient. I've used Squirrelmail and Roundcube before and liked them.
Do I need to install Postfix in order to user Squirrelmail or Roundcube? How should I set up mail?

whenever I start my server i get following error "root DN missing".
when I try to create root DN I get error "unable to create object class".
where do we define object classes?
I am downloading the 64-bit image of Ubuntu 9.10 right now, but I notice the filename has "amd64" in it. Will it only work on 64-bit AMD processors? I want to install it onto an enterprise-class server with a 64-bit Intel Xeon processor.

I'm running the turnkey linux version of joomla and I need to use PHP's mail functionality to send a notification email from a page (separate from joomla content) . PHP's native stuff is rather plain and I find myself needing the functionality of PEAR. So I've installed PEAR via aptitude, but it has installed to /usr/share/php.
how do I include these files from php scripts? Firstly, the files are owned by root, the www-data user doesn't have access. It also appears that the permissions on the files may need to be modified. Some php files don't have the execute flag (shouldn't they)? I recognize the point of having a centralized location for updates and sharing, so I don't want to just copy the files to my web directory (/var/www).
I want to install[URL] extension into PHP, but it seems like it's only installed by pear, and for pear I need php-pear which wants to install php-cli. I already have php-cgi with fcgi and Apache2 worker MPM.
