Server :: Which Intel Processor To Run A Server On - Xeon Or Core I5
Aug 23, 2010I would like to run my own server, and I'm thinking of buying a dedicated machine to run it on. I checked out the dell website for a cheap machine to run it on (I don't need high performance - just a personal file server running a few hard drives, and a web/mail server). I noticed that they have some cheap models in their server line that are as cheap as a desktop. Compare:

The main difference I see between the desktops and the servers is the use of the Core or Xeon processor, and also, the servers tend to have lower RAM.if I am looking for value, should I opt for a low end desktop or a low end server to run a personal server? Also, what advantage does the Xeon processors and Dell server line have over the desktop models that make it better for running a server?

OpenSUSE :: Getting A Fan Speed/temperature Monitoring Program For 11.4?
Mar 18, 2011I have a dual boot with xp and opensuse 11.4. There has been an annoying 'system fan has failed' error message that was dealt with by replacing a fan and installing speedfan and hardware monitor on the windows partition, but my opensuse installation has no such programs running, and I want to keep things cool while I'm running opensuse. Speedfan is a program that tells the fans to turn on and off. Usually according to the temperature that the sensors are reading. The program shows temperatures and fan speeds and allows you to have control.Is there a fan speed/temperature monitoring program for opensuse?

Dec 4, 2010I have just recently installed opensuse 11.3 on my computer. I have switched from Ubuntu and have been trying to get things configured similar to what it was. One problem I have encountered is with installing sensors and k10temp, the module needed to monitor my CPU temp. within Linux. I have an AMD sempron and a biostar mcp6p m2+ motherboard. I have installed package "sensors" and have run the sensors-detect and it went through and found k10temp that I would need to load within the kernel for this to work properly. I had this working in Ubuntu, but not sure how to do it in openSuse. I have tried compiling the k10temp source, running modprobe k10temp and received no output, and looked around the conf files, but not sure how to go about doing it?

Sep 24, 2010So i hava a ASUS M3N78-VM mobo and recently i got a Athlon II 250 CPU tp replace my aging Athlon 3200+. I installed the BIOS update 1407 that includes support for this CPU. I have Debian Squeeze installed.
I have installed the 2.6.35 kernel from experimental and this has the k10temp module that is made for the k10 series AMD CPUs (Athlon II etc). But there is also the atk0110 ACPI module that gets sensor readings fom voltages, MB and CPU temps from the motherboard (i think so). The issue is this: if i run sensors i get this:

Notice the difference between the 2 module's reported temperature for the CPU (34 C vs 19.2 C). I rebooted the computer and entered the BIOS - it has shown the values shown by the acpi sensor (it increased rapidly to 38-39 but gone back to 34-35 after i loaded the OS). Does this mean that the k10temp module reports erroneous temperature or that everybody else (BIOS + ACPI sensor) is wrong and i have an ice cool CPU?

Oct 11, 2010I am running some muti-threaded code that uses a lot of memory (~6GB). I have it compiled on a cluster that uses Xeon 5160 quad core CPUs with 4MB cache/core, 8GB of RAM and kernel 2.6.18 (x86_64) and I have also the same code compiled on another cluster that uses Opteron 2214 quad core CPUs with 1MB cache/core, 8GB of RAM and kernel 2.6.28 (x86_64). On the Intel cluster the code generates barely any system load when I look on top but on the AMD cluster it can generate over 50% of system load. On the intel machines my process can generate a constant load of 3, while the load generated by the process on the AMD machines is about 1.6.
Does anybody know what could cause this? Could it be the version of the kernel or the difference between the CPUs (for example, the much smaller cache of the AMD CPUS)? My software and all its dependencies are the same on both clusters. I am also using the exact same version of GCC to compile everything.

I've tried lm-sensors: sensors-detect didn't find any sensors; following its hint ("This is relatively common on laptops, where thermal management is handled by ACPI rather than the OS.") I tried acpi -V but got nothing thermal. The Gnome panel applet "Hardware Sensors Monitor" reports on GPU temperature but nothing else.

Mar 9, 2010I've got a dual Xeon 5570 (Nehalem) server. It clocks down properly, but never, under any circumstances that I've found, clocks up past its TSC. Even when running basically nothing but cat /dev/zero > /dev/null, nothing gets clocked higher than the TSC. Below is the turbostat output, which clearly knows what the hardware is actually capable of, but it never actually achieves it. I'm running Lenny, with backported kernel 2.6.30-bpo.2-amd64. I tried the 2.6.32 backport and there wasn't any difference. know where I should look next? BIOS settings? Do I need to change some kernel option and recompile?

It came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium but now I have Fedora 11 (w/ Gnome) as the only OS. The router that I am using with an Ethernet cable connected to my laptop is a Netgear 54Mbps Wireless Router WGR614 v7 connected to a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem. Both worked right out of the box and now I have wired Internet access. RCN is my ISP. I would like to avoid using the Ethernet cable connecting my laptop to the router.
This is what I have done so far:
1. Gone to System>Administration>Network
2. Clicked "New" then chose "Wireless connection" from the list
3. Chose Intel Corp. Wireless WiFi Link 5100 (wlan0) from list. The other option was "Other Wireless Card".
I don't know what to do after this. What should I choose in the windows entitled "Configure Wireless Connection" and "Configure Network Settings" ? I chose Ad-Hoc for mode and entered an SSID name even though I have no explanation for taking these actions. As for the other settings, I simply went with whatever was already selected. At the moment, I lose Internet access when I disconnect the Ethernet cable. I see other wireless networks when I click the network icon on the top right corner of the screen. I don't know how to make my router appear on that list if that's necessary.

Aug 23, 2010In simple, I have tried everything I can find on this issue, but I am still unable to get it working on my HP DV4 laptop. My laptop has a Intel 5100 wireless card, and it always says that wireless is disabled. Ive tried booting with the wireless switch off, with it on, ive reinstalled the driver and did everything in a post I found here (cant find a link) that basicly had me reinstall the driver from intels site, then reload the network manager, to no prevail. Im running ubuntu 10.4.1 (just installed), and this is really a big issue 4 me.

Mar 22, 2010I have Dell 1537 laptop having Intel 5100 wireless card. It is not supported by Fedora 9. I have tried downloading the driver iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.24.2.12.tgz from URL...Downloads and copied it to folder /lib/firmware and rebooted the machine. But still it is not detected by the system. Is there any solution to this problem .

I'm running 11.4, added the compat-wireless recently to be able to run the newes firmware (iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode , firmware version 8.83.5.1 build 33692), but still all I get is 54Mbit/s. I'd like to know if ANYONE ever got the 802.11n speed on linux, and in particular with these intel cards.
